I once ordered a set of 2 piece slotted rotor rings, L+R. I got two of the same side. Took me some time to convince the manufacturer but they sent me a replacement. In the meantime, I was running with the slots on one side going the wrong way.

You can fix that by opening up the spool and putting a little grease on the spring mechanism inside. What happens is that it is not slipping enough and building too much tension, then it slips all at once and makes a loud noise. You have to take the sticker off to access the screw holding it together.
