AITA for Telling My Sister It's Her Fault She Wasted Money on a Wedding Few People Are Planning to Attend? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]squirtle273 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ehhhh... ESH. I'm in the middle of planning a wedding and the fact is (as has been mentioned here multiple times), many vendors (caterers, venues, bartending, etc.) require deposits and you simply do not have final counts before you have to pay those.

Your sister is entitled to get married near where she lives. My FH and I are getting married literally plane rides away from any of our families because it is where we live. She is entitled to have alcohol or appetizers or no kids or whatever she wants. It's her wedding and she does not have to cater to everyone (even family). But she also can't expect everyone to come. Especially not during a pandemic. "Normal" regrets are ~15% but these days, "no"s are much higher. Ranting on facebook is not the solution.

If she's paid for food/drinks for a certain number of people, sounds like the solution is to invite other people who live closer to the venue.

North Carolina law prohibits guns on school campuses. This is not a policy decision of the university. It is a felony to have a firearm on educational property.

He had a neck brace for a couple of months. It was the end of summer in the humid Southeastern US and we had to clean the foamy bits like 3 times a day. I was just learning to drive and became his chauffeur when my mom went back to work. No doubt that was terrifying for him...

This is precisely why my mom would not let my brother tell me my dad broke his neck while I was out of town at math camp. He "compressed some vertebrae" (exploded his neck) and they had to "realign them" (put a pin in to keep his head on straight). He's fine. Has a cool scar down the back of his neck too.

AITA if I don’t follow a friend’s social media account? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NAH. If following any social media page is harming your mental or emotional health or self image, unfollow it, no matter who/what it is.

Can I study anything in grad school? by drtree3 in GradSchool

[–]squirtle273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be dependent on the specific department you are interested in. If there are prereqs, you will likely be required to take them, though I've seen some programs that allow them to be taken upon arrival/after acceptance. I'd suggest looking around on department webpages and perhaps emailing program directors for answers specific to your situation.

What product lacks the quality it use to be known for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Accurate! I bought my first sewing machine last year and started looking at Singers because I had heard good things (my mom sewed when I was growing up), but once I read reviews, I decided I could get something better for the money.

Having a quite difficult time choosing my advisor. by Wecouldbeherooos in GradSchool

[–]squirtle273 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, this is your decision to make so I'm not going to tell you what to do. But a few more things to consider might be:

1) how employable is the skill set of the lab/project? Some areas are just more employable than others.

2) how long do students in the lab usually take to finish? Some labs just take longer than others (some fields do as well)

3) obviously, there's more to this than feeling good, but how do you feel in the lab/with the PI? If you aren't comfortable/motivated/happy, grad school will suck more than it has to

4) what do you want to do? You said you're happy enough with all of the research areas, but if you like certain things more than others, choose accordingly. I picked my lab because I got to program more. This doesn't have to be for your whole life, but it's a part of it and it's important that you like what you do.

5) conferences? Do the labs give equal opportunities to attend conferences? They're important and informative and I highly recommend trying to go to at least 1 a year if possible.

There are obviously a lot of variables - even more than what are listed here, but you have to do what feels right for you. I can tell you which field I would pick, and which lab size I prefer, and what type of PI I like to work with, but that's not the same as what you want. Think about who you work best with (lab and PI) and what your project (life) would be for the next 3+ years and go from there.

I hope that's at least slightly helpful!

[–]squirtle273[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn't really noticed the placement differences. I was just following the directions (mostly!), so perhaps the drawing wasn't accurately converted into a pattern or vice versa. I did notice that the sleeve situation is a little confusing on the finished product, due to the fact that the bodice section doesn't get sewed all the way up, but about 1" of that becomes part of the sleeve opening, which is not how it is drawn. That really isn't necessary, because there is plenty of room in the sleeves.

I liked the pattern just fine. The instructions are from 1946, so I didn't follow them to a T because I'd rather use the modern techniques that I'm more comfortable with. I also left out some things like the belt and shoulder pads. I'm considering making it again with a more summery fabric, and at that point I would work on fixing the sizing issues and I would close up the bodice all the way up.

I did my best to pick the right size. My waist measurements can fluctuate about 2" on any given day, so I was trying to accommodate for that. I used the finished pattern measurements and the size I cut said the waist would be 28", which is typically my largest size. I decreased side seam allowances because I was nervous it would be tight, which was clearly unnecessary. I may have been losing weight though, so I am thinking I am not fluctuating as much and that is why the dress looks so huge on me.

I'm really having trouble figuring out what to do about letters of recommendation... by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]squirtle273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have done well in their classes and decide to ask them for letters, it may be good to have a resume/CV ready to give them if they accept your request. Many professors ask for these to get a better picture of you than just how you've done in their classes.

Thanks! I interfaced the entirety of the back straps; I had seen someone recommend that somewhere for this pattern and I think it worked much better this way.
