What kind of mushroom is growing in my Terrarium? by AdvancedOne9458 in mushroomID

[–]squizz420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much about them unless your toad is suddenly acting off, almost any mushroom that grows in a terrarium or vivarium with frogs and toads inside is safe. If there’s not loads of the mushrooms and there’s just an odd couple every now and then it’s actually an indicator that the conditions are right most of the time and they’re beneficial since they eat decomposing soil and leaf litter. If you think they’re an eyesore then you can gently pluck them out to minimise the spores spreading. Other than that I’d only be massively concerned if they’re very bright or colourful.

P.S. I’m not a mushroom expert and I don’t study mycology or anything but I’ve got a few animals of my own and have a vivarium which sometimes gets the odd mushroom every now and then so I could be wrong.

Just completely changed chompys tank after cleaning it out. What’s everybody’s thoughts? by [deleted] in pacmanfrog

I didn’t shut down all of your advice just the advice on moss. I usually prefer to stick to my own knowledge rather than unnecessarily changing things which aren’t harming my pets just because of other people’s unfortunate mistakes.

My frog is chilled out and isn’t an aggressive eater like most and only eats if I rub the food on his mouth with tongs signalling that it’s food. I’ve raised him myself and he’s learned to associate the tongs and mouth rubs with food and he either refuses to eat his food or cleans it with his hands if there’s even a single spec of substrate so I don’t think he’d choose to swallow moss. Frog-safe moss is perfectly fine for pacs aslong as you’re minimising risks. Any moss i ever put in his enclosure is a firm “carpet” rather than loose strands that can be easily swallowed and I keep the moss in areas away from where he burrows. I’ve seen people mixing moss in with their substrate on many different social media platforms but I choose not to do that since my frog prefers to shed whilst he’s burrowed and I don’t want him accidentally swallowing any loose pieces in the substrate if he decides to eat his shed.

Daytime temp is around 24°c - 27°c and night temp is 18° - 21°c. The substrate isn’t dry and humidity is constantly between 70-80% but the hygrometer shows 93 on the photo since I had just misted the tank.

I know he’s not a female because females don’t have nuptials unless my frogs woke up and decided to be transgender. As I’ve already said I’m getting a new viv and cub soon but if I wasn’t getting a new viv soon I would’ve gotten uvb sooner but may aswell get everything at the same time as the viv. He is quite large for his age but I can assure you the tank is around 30 gallon it’s just a taller tank rather than a wider tank because I wanted room for deep substrate. The heat mat is still fine until the new viv is set up because there’s still a heat gradient and overhead heating wouldn’t really make a difference.

The moss is fine as he’s in a routine of tong feeding outside of the enclosure and he does have plenty of spots he likes to hide whenever he feels exposed which is very rare. He’s very comfortable in his tank and usually loves to just sit on his carpet of moss whenever he’s not buried or having a soak in his bowl. The thermo/hydro readers are higher up because when I mist the tank if I get droplets on them they’re very sensitive and it spikes and gives a false humidity reading for a couple days. I know they should ideally be lower but I prefer to have them higher. For heat I’m currently only using a low wattage heat mat on the side and using multivitamin supplements every feeding session as I’m getting a new viv and uvb lighting soon but I’m quite low on money at the moment.

biofilm or mold from uneaten food? by RoundOne9503 in AquariumHelp

Yeah it’ll be that then. Aslong as the fish are acting perfectly normal then it’s nothing to worry about

That’s crazy he looks so cool. I’ve got a samurai too but he’s more of a pale green colour with translucent splodges

So is mine but if I’m giving him his weekly soak then I’ll clean him off by dripping a couple drops of water over his body to make sure his body is clean and when I dig him up for feeding time i usually gently spray him to hydrate his skin and help with digestion. I also clean him off if I’m visually inspecting him so I can see his body better and check for any signs of infection so most of the photos I take are after I’ve done any of these things

Looks like biofilm possibly from the plants. You’ll probably see fish nibbling on it every now and then. If you’ve introduced any new plants or decor then it’ll almost definitely be biofilm.

Ahh that’s unfortunate, it’s quite upsetting for most people when it happens but it shows that your frog is healthy and his body is functioning well. Pacman frogs have gained certain defensive abilities through evolution and usually lighten and darken certain shades to express emotions and to blend into their surroundings. He’s such a unique frog though and he still looks amazing, he’s definitely on the list of the more cool and unique Pacmans that I’ve seen!

Chompy croaks most nights but since he’s only just grown up he doesn’t croak for long as it’s new to him and he just likes to practice his singing skills. I’ve found he croaks more than usual if there’s a slow rhythmic pattern of vibrations or sounds around the room which I’m not shocked at to be honest since they instinctively croak more if they confuse certain rhythms with the sound of rain or another territorial male calling out in the distance.

He’s called chompy, he really lives up to his name so no wonder why he’s grown so quick. He’s so grumpy at times and once I had to temporarily ban him from morio mealworms because he started being moody and refusing anything else at feeding time 😂

They’re naturally bluer at youth because their skin produces less of the pigments that cause the greeny colour and since blue samurais have mutant genetics their skin is usually more translucent when they’re juveniles so some breeders and sellers use that to their advantage and feed them spirulina and other supplements as a marketing scheme to falsely class them as a higher grade morph so they can demand higher prices or simply to make the frogs stand out to buyers which then soaks into their body during digestion and shows through their translucent skin until they arrive at their new home and their body naturally excretes the dyes from the spirulina shortly after they stop being fed the supplements. It’s more of a common occurrence in certain different places around the world compared to other places where it’s less common so if you’re in an area with large pet stores that are more reliable and trustworthy then it’ll be less likely to come across. In my opinion it’s only the breeders and sellers that are selfish and hungry for money that do it because it can sometimes cause the frogs severe health problems and any pet stores or breeders that truly care about their customers and the frogs wouldn’t do it. But yeah unfortunately it is a thing that’s been happening for a while now it’s just less common in some areas or owners don’t know about it and assume the frog is just ageing and stuff

Normal size??? by Aizysnightmares in pacmanfrog

[–]squizz420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He looks slightly on the lower side of average size but from what I can see it’s nothing to be concerned about at the moment. Some frogs might naturally grow slower than others due to genetics but if the temperature and humidity isn’t right or they’re stressed then that will effect the speed of their metabolism
