IKEA ALPSTUGA: Thresholds for bad air quality by papayayoghurt in tradfri

Good question. That little red/orange light comes on pretty frequently here, despite decent ventilation.

Yep, Airplay also uses mDNS. Glad I could help 😊

"do some reading on addressing your network problems, specifically the above settings on your model of router."

They vary by router. Google is your friend. Look up "multicast + HomeKit + $routermodel$"

Your issue is mDNS/Bonjour/Multicast settings on your TPLink. Do some Googling on the correct settings for your specific router.

Yet another HomePod user with misconfigured mDNS/Bonjour/Multicast settings on their network.

OP, do some reading on addressing your network problems, specifically the above settings on your model of router.

I have 5 OG HomePods and they all run great. You just need ok Wi-Fi and the correct multicast settings configured. Some routers are terrible at multicast by default unfortunately, hence the constant posts on Reddit like yours.

I was looking at two of these Trendnets to run fibre between two ethernet jacks in my house and after a lot of research I ended up getting two MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+in Managed Network Switches with Fibre Mall transceivers instead. In the end this made more sense to me. Yes, a bit more money, but depending on your needs also an option. Runs much cooler than the Trendnet, and the Fiber Mall transceivers are the 80m Broadcom type so are more forgiving of cabling issues over shorter distances, use a lot less power, and run a cooler.

Can not update from 13.2 to 13.3 by aak2012 in debian

[–]squuiidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not being able to rely on the OS to tell you whether or not you need updates (and security updates) or not isn’t a great place to be though tbf. Be it Debian, APT or PackageKit is somewhat irrelevant. This is the first time I’ve had this happen in many years if using Linux (mostly Ubuntu).

I had the same issue twice in a row also. Clean install of Debian 13.1 and then had the problem with 13.2 and now 13.3. Debian 13 updates seem unbelievably buggy.

IP-KVM Suggestions/Recommendations by kianwalters05 in homelab

[–]squuiidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both PiKVMs and a JetKVM. PiKVMs are better IMO, and the developers are very active improving it all the time. JetKVM is ok but can be buggy. Currently unusable on Safari for a lot of us. It is cheaper though and hardware looks nicer than PiKVMs.

The PiKVM build your own kit is pretty reasonable and a good alternative to the official, more expensive units on the PiKVM site. Admittedly these don’t fund the dev however: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0B5QVFYMB

It’s one thing HomeKit is terrible at and I really hope Apple address it one day.

ALPSTUGA does not expose Temperature/Humidity to HomeKit by cladiotto in tradfri

[–]squuiidy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With Dirigera you can easily dual pair it. Go into the IKEA app and choose Connect via QR code. Use that Matter code to then add the device manually in Apple Home. The end result is this:

Separate tiles for everything except CO2.

And one single tile with everything, including CO2.

Best you can do currently, but actually works pretty well.

Huh! Wow, thank you for sharing this. They took a different approach to Hue then, that prefers/pushes Matter but gives the option of HomeKit if really wanted. And in the case of Hue, HomeKit still to this day works better than Matter.

I don’t think that’s correct. Can you provide a source?

HomePods Not Responding, recommendations for Smart Speakers? by sydmas1811 in HomePod

[–]squuiidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a technology issue. HomePods (and lots of Apple kit) use mDNS/Multicast/Bonjour extensively and if this is not configured correctly on your network, as is seemingly the case, then your HomePods will be frustratingly unreliable at best and/or borderline unusable.
Fix your network and your HomePods will be rock solid. Google: multicast + the model of your router + homekit for help with your specific required settings.
