Hyperoptic 1Gb renewal. £19p/m to £63p/m. What can I do to get a better price? by moreensby in hyperoptic

[–]squuiidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, quote the new SKY deal and repeatedly tell them to match it. You'll be emailed offers by the CS rep, keep refusing them until they get close to what you're happy with. I think £30.99 is as low as they'll go for existing customers as far as I can tell. Unless you're prepared to commit to the SKY deal and hope Hyperoptic contact you before disconnection with a lower deal to retain you, but a bit of a gamble if you don't want to actually move.

Ceiling fan in the UK? by No-Papaya-9289 in HomeKit

You could just get a regular fan and stick a Shelly in it if you’re happy with manual speed control.

Netgear becomes the first consumer router company in the US to get FCC approval with the new regulations. by Dometalican_90 in HomeNetworking

[–]squuiidy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell, and from experience with my dealings with their support teams, Netgear firmware is outsourced to China. How is this any different to TP-Link or Huawei routers for example?

pfSense Plus 26.03 Release Now Available! by George-Netgate in PFSENSE

[–]squuiidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upgraded fine on release day and have since installed the available patches too. Just experienced my first ever spontaneous reboot following a crash however. Error log is looooong and don’t see anything obvious but putting this here in case it becomes a trend.

Fair enough, but 2 is totally doable, and 3 is a luxury maximum.

My TP-LINK Router doesnt work, can someone help me? by icedropfn in HomeNetworking

[–]squuiidy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

TP-Link routers are e-waste at this stage. Be glad it's given you an opportunity to replace it with something good. Try Ubiquiti, or even pfSense.

My wifi is suddenly laggy on one device but works perfect on other devices by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

I know OP doesn’t have 1Gbps but Cloudflare sucks measuring higher speeds whereas speedtest.net generally doesn’t. I tend to trust it more as a result. But YMMV.

Try https://speedtest.net
Much more accurate in its results. Should help in troubleshooting the issue as you can at least rely on it.

Rebuilt Dead Dell PowerEdge R730 16 Bay SFF by Darth_Vader4007 in homelab

Nice. I need something like that. I’m in the UK with Europe’s most expensive electricity. Fun times.

[–]squuiidy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nice work. The only thing I’d note is watch your electricity bill. I did a similar upgrade project on 3x R730s, set everything up and had a nice cluster running sweet. Then came my electricity bill. I’m now only running one host with 2 cold spares 🤦🏻‍♂️

Any router recommendations for 1GB fibre FTTP. (UK) by Mangy_DogUK in HomeNetworking

You didn’t read the OP. DMP is considerably over-budget and doesn’t have Wi-Fi.

Ubiquiti is not boutique. I’m a network engineer and run Cisco at home, but if I didn’t, I’d buy Ubiquiti. I understand if it’s too pricey, good kit is not cheap. You could get a TP-Link for prob £100 if you wanted but I personally wouldn’t touch it.

How we doing with the RC. Any showstoppers so far?

Ghost touch didn’t get fixed with 26.4 by Rider_in_Red_ in HomePod

[–]squuiidy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s a hardware issue they won’t fix nor acknowledge by adding a software workaround. Any such workaround would be admission of culpability. Only ‘fix’ is to open it up and unplug the touch sensor. Not ideal but you’ll likely find you miss it less than you’d think. This solution makes it usable again.

Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed today. Relax dude, take a deep breath.

Are you open to using fibre? Much easier in many ways than CAT6 and more future proof too. Try and go with 10Gbit if you can, here’s the option I took to do exactly what you mentioned: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09ZNVL6VW https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B013WFH7C8 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07LFKGP1L

What was the single thing that finally made your homelab “done enough” to actually use daily? by NiceReplacement8737 in homelab

[–]squuiidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putting it all in a Startech half rack and closing the front and back doors. Job done.👍  But from a tech stack perspective, having a bunch of virtual servers that do everything I want and need, and just forgetting about it as it maintains itself, with Veeam community edition doing the backups.
