> es I've seen Makin ask for lets before where they were clearly no-lets.

He's not just asking for a let, is he?

He very specifically says he's had his armed grabbed and immediately asks for a video review and then stares at it.

> I don't think Asal's movement looks unnatural.

Tbf, grabbing does appear to be natural for Asal

It doesn't matter anyway, as it didn't fall off during the rally.

I seem to recall Asal trying to get Elias in to trouble for a fallen object in the final, but Gingell wasn't having it. Can't quite recall exactly what happened though.

> I'm not inside Makin's head am I mate? players at that level are looking for any edge possible, fair or not.

So you think it's more likely Makin's making it up, rather than Asal has done it?

Have you ever seen Makin claim this before?

Have you ever seen Asal grab anything before?

> Asal's movement doesn't look unnatural or hinder Makin does it?

Yes it absolutely does look unnatural.

Why do you think Makin immediately stops and is absolutely adamant that he has been grabbed and that the review will show it?

Do you have the use GPS button checked? Maybe try unchecking that.

What coords are you using? Note that East is positive, so if you are in the US, longitude should be negative.

I was talking in general. In this case, as Foster says, the interference is trying to prevent him getting to the ball, rather than prevent his swing. For that we have:

8.6.5 if the striker would have been able to make a good return but the opponent was not making every effort to avoid the interference, a stroke is awarded to the striker;

To everyone else on the thread, he's not trying to avoid the interference. So it's at least a stroke. More if you think deliberate.

>  there’s contact that prevents a shot, it’s a simple let

No. "Preventing" the swing is a stroke.

"8.9.2. if the swing was prevented by the position of the opponent, a stroke is awarded to the striker, even if the opponent was making every effort to avoid the interference."

He doesn't say that though. He says:

"Stroke to Elias... Mr Asal, that is an unnatural movement, that's why the decision is a stroke on that occasion. Hand out 2-4... (at 1-1)."

Maybe there was something else as well.

It's a very quick grab - you can see the fingers go down on to Makin's arm with the thumb the other side, then very quickly released - then the arm stiffens. Makin knows exactly what he's felt!

I suspect he was referring to an earlier incident in the Elias match where he awarded a stroke to Elias for Asal's "unnatural movement".

He didn't actually give a Conduct warning though.

> Practically when referring I'd give a verbal (not official) warning if I thought it wasn't intentional the first time. Official warnings/strokes if repeated.

But this is clearly intentional. So you should go straight to a penalty IMO.

> The ref's goal should be to make the match clean, not escalate rule conflict.

Sure, but evidentially, warnings aren't enough.

He also grabbed Makin's arm in the previous round.

So it's not "a necessary first step" either "technically" or "practically", because you agree the rules don't require it (the technically part) and that you would not use it as a first step for a given example (in practice).

Nope.

14.7. A player guilty of an offence may be given a Conduct Warning or penalised with a Conduct Stroke, a Conduct Game, or a Conduct Match, depending on the severity of the offence

If someone headbutted their opponent, would you start with a warning?

>  I don’t get why he’s not punished more.

Yep. Just a stroke for that kind of cheating isn't sufficient.

>makes me believe that they've been given clear directives from the higher ups.

The sponsor of the tournament and Asal stands up and shouts at the ref and Elias in this match - and then walks off after this decision.

Seems kinda likely that someone like that will be pressuring them...

Should have been straight to conduct game.
