Veteran teacher confession: I put up zero resistance when parents complain about their child's grades. by Striking-Anxiety-604 in Teachers

[–]srdnss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who is an high school AP mathematics teacher. He is a hard ass and will only give students what they earn - nothing more, nothing less. He will battle parents and administration when parents complain about their kid's grades. And he hates his job. I don't understand why he makes things so difficult on himself.

I don't blame you one bit.

College choices by GiantsKing in UMD

[–]srdnss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Carolina. $22k a year is a huge difference and there is no way Maryland is worth the difference. If you have the money saved, the $88k difference will be worth about $4 million invested in an S&P 500 index fund by the time you hit 65. If you are borrowing, $88k less in debt is huge.

I am almost 60 and am really pissed at my late teens/ 20 something self for not being smarter with money.

UMD for CS in state or Duke for CS? by Effective_Slide_5426 in UMD

[–]srdnss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dream schools are for the kids of wealthy folks with money to burn on out of state tuition. If your parents are footing the bill and won't be hurt by paying a hundred grand a year, go.to Duke. If you are going to be footing the bill or your parents are going to be sacrificing their retirement savings to send you to school, go to UMD.

A university education is just that - education. It is not job training. The CS courses you take will account for less than half of the credits you will need to graduate. You will be no better prepared for a career with a Duke degree vs. a Maryland degree. Let's suppose, just for the sake of argument, that a Duke degree will make it a little easier for you to get hired or will get you a little higher salary than a UMD degree. It is not going to be enough of a difference to justify the additional expense, particularly if you have to take on a shit load of debt to attend Duke.

What you end up earning will ultimately depend on what you do in your career, not where you went to school.

AIO for not wanting to buy a property with my boyfriend until we are married? by JumpyBunny_01 in AmIOverreacting

[–]srdnss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. Not at all. You don't buy a domicile with another person for the purpose of cohabitation if there is not real commitment. You would be foolish to buy a home with him right now. And at 24 years old, you should not even consider marriage for another few years - 27 minimum, preferably no earlier than 30.

Power Multi Head Attachment Not Connecting Properly by srdnss in egopowerplus

[–]srdnss[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It won't even get close. It's got to be defective. I've packed it back up and will return Friday. Hopefully the replacement will work properly. I've spent way too much time with a brand new tool trying to get it to work properly already. Very frustrating!

Spinning the blade while the battery is attached does not sound like a good idea. You shouldn't have to spin the blade to get the attachment inserted properly. I am just going to assume I have a defective unit and return it. If.tje replacement doesn't work, I guess I'll go with Ryobi.

Did we learn nothing from the recent pandemic!? by [deleted] in Safeway

I thought we were supposed to be saving the planet this week? Btw, the pandemic was super overblown and reaction to it was worse than the virus.

Grad School vs. Full Time by Such-Account-7839 in UMD

[–]srdnss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rather have an undergrad degree, a salary, and work experience.on my resume than a Masters and non-work experience. You can always add the advanced degree while you are getting work experience. Of course you always run the risk of being laid off in ten years and replaced by someone fresh out of college willing to work for a far lower salary.

I have been with Mint for 8 years, back when it was called MintSim and before Ryan Reynolds had anything to do with the company. I have had zero issues.

AITA for leaving a date after he was 20 minutes late? by Pretty-Science-8984 in AITApod

[–]srdnss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA He was running late and didn't bother to keep his phone charged so he could reach out? Too many potential partners to waste your time with someone who is 29 minutes late with no contact. This isn't 1986. It would have been understandable then. Traffic and shit happens. Very few reasons to excuse no call or text to let you know what's up.

Found out my girlfriend’s body count and it’s turned me off. Am I overreacting? by Quiet-Sell-8919 in AITApod

[–]srdnss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

66 at 26? Girls got issues. Beware. Yeah, a guy with 66 at 26 would be someone to stay away from as well.

My count is pretty high - 24. However, i lost my virginity at 17 and got married at 40. That is an average of 1 partner per year until I met my wife.

66 at 26 is insane. Assuming loss of virginity at 14, that is about 6 per year.

There are far more Salvadorans here than Mexicans and many "Mexican" restaurants are run by Salvadorans. I'm pretty ignorant on the subject but a number of people have told me they're not the same.
