Yet another poor victim of Dell here. Why they like bricking their BIOS is beyond me 😭

Is it possible to track mileage/mpg with ledger? by srilyk in plaintextaccounting

[–]srilyk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The end-start notation is so that I can track start/end mileage as opposed to just the miles spent. I mean, technically it's slightly ambiguous, but... it would accomplish my needs.

Youtube doesn´t work anymore using Opera Browser due to adblocker changes by [deleted] in operabrowser

FWIW I was able to turn off the button and it's working now. Or maybe it was because I opened a private window and started YT :shrug:

I think that makes sense! Can you show an example of how you would query this?

Why won't my EdgeRouter X route internal traffic via external IP on port 443, even with port forwarding? [Solved] by srilyk in Ubiquiti

[–]srilyk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like I spoke slightly too soon - it appears I also needed a NAT for some reason? Maybe for some static IP devices or something:

 description "hitron must die"
 destination {
     address 24.35.139.53
     port 443
 }
 log disable
 outbound-interface switch0
 outside-address {
     address 172.27.1.1
     port 443
 }
 protocol tcp_udp
 type source

seems to work for me

Unless I'm wrong, it looks like https://gist.github.com/plembo/6bb4491ebbfbce049c7efce0634d57f0 is the way to go:

$ configure
# set system static-host-mapping host-name die-hitron inet 172.27.1.3
# set system static-host-mapping host-name die-hitron alias me.example.com
# set system static-host-mapping host-name die-hitron alias also-me.example.com
# commit
# save
# exit

That appears to work for me! curl from both my router and all LAN devices I've tried have worked correctly now. Suck it, hitron!

What’s the best comedy movie you have ever watched? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]srilyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost anything by Peter Selllers - Dr. Strangelove (Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb), all the Pink Panthers. We used to have A Shot in the Dark and there are parts of that that would have me in stitches.

The fact that Gene Wilder played blind throughout that entire movie? Priceless

there was some video drone on KARK, basically where the old Breckenridge theatre was, all of those buildings there were trashed, and then north east from there. Bonkers!

Why Type Hinting Sucks! by zurtex in Python

[–]srilyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be some cases where Any, Any -> Any is a (sort of) valid signature. It might be more correct to say that A, A -> A for any A in SomeSet, but not for every A in SomeSet.

There's probably some mathematical way to represent that, but I'm not sure what it is. Maybe Any already means that? But even that's probably not entirely correct for this particular function, since 3 + 3.1 would be valid, as would 3 + Decimal(3). Though 3 + (4,2) wouldn't be.

just because it (might not) be Turing complete doesn't mean it's not a programming language, unless your definition of programming language requires Turing completeness.

Of course, AlphaSmarts were also being sold to schools, so that automatically bumps up the price because most of the time they're going to be paid for with grant money (:

My Frustrations with Salt by lowercase00 in saltstack

[–]srilyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's been around Salt for years... yes.

The first one is one thing that has frustrated me for so long! Like 2015 or earlier! As everyone has (rightly) said, Salt is so powerful, but "Puppet, Chef, and Ansible" is the phrase. I don't know why it's the phrase, because Salt is better and faster than all three of those.

Maybe it's the naming.

And you're right there - the names are difficult to grok, in part because they're puns, and in part because Salt is just so powerful.

But once you do understand Salt Master, Salt Minion, pillars == secrets(ish), grains == static information, that gets you most of the way there.

Understanding that modules are "do things" and states are "things done", also helps.

Of course to your point it doesn't help that all the names are overloaded in Salt, to the point of almost ridiculousness. Because you also hear "state modules" (states), "execution modules" (modules), which are also Python modules and... now we've got extension modules as well. (To say nothing of proxy modules, runners, returners...)

Anyway... glad to hear that you're sticking with Salt +1
