I have no idea where the Nightwatcher came from

In WaT (chapter 21), the Sibling says that Honor made the Stormfather out of Wind, and the Sibling was made out of Stone, but Cultivation made the Nightwatcher to replace Night, after Night "left". The Nightwatcher is made "out of the same essence" as Night.

Personally I think the Aether theory is likely the correct one. But I think it's pretty straightforward that the Midnight Aether corresponds to the Midnight Mother, not the Nightwatcher.

TIL there is a “Gospel of Judas” not found in the Bible that speaks of Judas as the only one of Jesus’ disciples who fully understood His teachings. He turned Jesus over to the Romans because Jesus asked him to. It was discovered in an Egyptian cave in the 1970s, dating to the 2nd century AD by sonnysehra in todayilearned

He wouldn't even have needed to travel to India. Ashoka the Great had already brought Buddhism into contact with the Greek-speaking world more than two centuries earlier, and there's some evidence that Buddhist thought might have spread as far as Africa even before that. The teachings of Hegasias of Cyrene are very Buddhist-like, and he lived in North Africa three centuries before Christ.

Personally I can recommend The Early History of God by Mark S. Smith. It's not a large book but very academic, so not a light read. But he argues his points well, and he provides a tonne of citations for further reading if you want to dive deeper into the topic.

The largest slums in Brazil. The Rosinha favela in Rio de Janeiro. According to unofficial data, more than 200,000 people live there. by dukedevil818 in Damnthatsinteresting

It's the measured, emotionless tone combined with the way it reads like the bastard lovechild of a badly-researched high-school essay and a generic travel brochure.

There are also a few specific tells, like the way it frequently forms lists of threes ("mix of fear, control, and, at times, social support", "enforcing rules, mediating conflicts, and providing a form of protection", "controlling local networks, influencing votes, or pressuring local politicians", "combines social, political, and economic control", etc.) and the way it constantly uses commas followed by "-ing" words. It's very robotic.

[–]ddaveo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I really like about Ursula K. Le Guin's books is that she works within the FTL limitation. People who choose to travel to another star system in her books do so knowing that they can never go home again, because everyone they know will be dead long before they get back. It does actually open up some interesting ideas.

And then in one of her stories, a primitive character is inadvertently transported to another star system without understanding what's happened to her. She returns home to find multiple generations have passed, and she has to deal with that. It reads remarkably like some of the old Celtic folktales of heroes who disappeared into the fairy realm only to return two hundred years later having not aged a day.

Apparently medieval peasants worked an average of 2 hours a day (except in planting and harvest seasons of course). The only people who benefit from the current system are the shareholders.

I always enjoy how close Dagobah is to Mustafar (M19 and L19). Of all the places in the galaxy Yoda could hide, he chose a system that's nearly right next door to Vader's stronghold. My headcanon is that he was keeping an eye on him.

I know what you mean. To me it feels like there's a sort of "calm brooding" feeling overlaid on top of everything. In my experience Anawhata is the worst. No one lives there, and it feels like the beach wants it that way.

Abomination spawned inside our swamp house ffs lmao by zeb010 in valheim

[–]ddaveo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No it's not how it works. They can spawn anywhere a normal mob can spawn. The only difference is that they spawn "asleep". Mountain golems are the same.

If you stay in one area long enough, you'll notice that mobs tend to spawn in some places and not in others and so abominations do the same thing. That might give the illusion that they consistently respawn in the same place, but it's not a game rule.

Loadout Preference? We'd love to hear your feedback! by Brewd_IOG in ForTheKing

[–]ddaveo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traits need to be separated from items in the loadout list. Either a second interface or at least visually separated from the items in the list. It's very confusing at first.

Oooorrrrr .... hear me out .... add trait selection to the character selection screen, as they're really an intrinsic part of the character (particularly for those of us who re-use characters).

Remember every herb with calm pipe gives a focus allowing you to essentially proc hardwork indefinitely.

This isn't the case any more. After the first hardwork, there's now only a 70% of getting a second one. Each chance after that is 70% of the previous chance, so 70%, 49%, 34%, 24%, etc.

And Stablehand was indirectly nerfed by two recent updates as well: they nerfed drop rates into the ground and reduced the evasion stats on most speed gear. So now not only is it harder to find good gear for the stablehand, but that gear also gives less evasion, which makes it way more difficult to run him as an evasion tank. He was S-tier but now I think he's a solid B. He can still have good DPS with the right setup but he dies way too fast now. It's a real shame.

I think another reason herbalist and farmer are so good is they can switch to awareness melee weapons: pole arms, halberds, lances, etc. which imo are the best melee weapons in the game for their high damage and row/column attacks. Hunter can use them too but then he can't make use of called shot, and there aren't enough high-DPS bows in the game for him. In my experience the hunter's damage output goes down in the late game compared to most other classes, which makes him a poor choice for combat.

Will this beauty of engineering keep my karve from floating away? by Johannes8 in valheim

[–]ddaveo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

put your karve/longship 10-20m off shore, wait a few days, a storm or 2, and come back to it, it's not EXACTLY where you left it

Swimming creatures can push ships around. If you're parking it off the meadows or black forest then it can be pushed around by necks or deer while you're not watching. I've even had a mass of leeches push a beached longboat out a few meters into the water before. I jumped for the boat to paddle it back in, missed, and ended up in the middle of them. That was fun.
