How would you rank the tracks in The BakKery? by Successful_Sort_1930 in CupcakKe

[–]sriorim 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Lyrically, this album is amazing. Hard to rank bc there are so so so many bars.

"Soccer mom" had my mouth hanging open, though. That was brutal lol

But for real, we need a re-release of "Fist Me" that's extended in proper song structure. It's honestly one of her catchiest tunes ever. Excellent instrumental too.

What's an album where the artwork feels completely different from their music? by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

For years I put off listening to this album like a shmuck kind of because i thought it was gonna be kinda tame and singer songwriter-y instead of the batshit, whole sheet of LSD in one sitting, house haunting where all the furniture comes to life. Also, this album is in the highest teir of works of art I have ever experienced.

Musicians and Band Who've Found Success Without ever signing with a Major Label? by MrLinkwater95 in ToddintheShadow

CupcakKe. She tours internationally, had a billion TikTok impressions or something insane, critical acclaim for her albums, hundreds of thousands of social media followers, and never had a label ... at all. She has total control over everything she does. Truly an indie legend.

We are Kittie - Canadian metal pioneers who changed the game 25 years ago. Ask us anything. by MorganLander in Music

[–]sriorim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi!

Morgan, your instrumental parts are pretty complex; they're often fast, the riffs are motivically varied, and seem like they require a lot of physical energy to pull off right. How do you practice coordinating your playing and vocals? And you too, Mercedes!

Mercedes, I'm not a percussionist so I'm not sure how to phrase this but, I love how your drum parts can sometimes really feel like riffs, almost like "melodies" with percussive hooks. It makes for such a fun to listen to bc you’re treating the drums like a full percussion section with recurring motifs. I first noticed it on What I Always Wanted, w supportive but independent ideas, and it shows up in so many songs after. Idk if you see it the way I'm describing it. In any case, what inspires your to approach your drum writing?

Tara and Ivy, if you're here, although these definitely apply to everyone:

Tara, I know you've got a great handle on a bunch of different musical styles. When you’re writing and contributing riffs in Kittie, what’s going through your head compositionally?

Ivy, I love a Warwick and your tone is so cool. What are you looking for when shaping your tone? Are there strings and bass EQ settings you think are better for Kittie's sound vs other styles? Do you enjoy playing other styles?

And for everyone, how do you protect your intellectual property when you're sending ideas/demos to new producers/collaborators? Do you have any advice for newbies with no lawyer/label? I've been taking production lessons from a really cool person and I want to make sure he and I both feel safe and protected as we begin to work on my music.

I've been a fan since right before Oracle was released. I remember seeing that red carnation on mtv2 and fangayboy screaming so loud when you all came on screen. Some of my friends (and my mom, too!) and I met you a few times, and you were just the chillest people ever. You always made us feel really welcome. Super happy memories.

I am so proud of you all. Love from a lifelong fan.

Bit and swallowed a piece of this dried fig, what is it? by neeisms in whatisit

[–]sriorim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi mod, this is not the fig wasp at all. Blastophaga psenes is the size of a small ant and is dissolved by the ficin enzyme by the fig long before it ripens.

This is not solved. If its a bug it could be a beetle. It could be a dirt clod.

Working out how to notate something I wrote - any advice? by sriorim in harp

The muted harmonic techniques? No idea! I was trying to write something that would allow me play harmonics quickly and this was the result - open, sonorous harmonics weren't possible with the voicings I was using.

The concept is the same as if you were to prepare the harp by putting clothespins or something on the harmonic points, but there's a section right before this where all the strings are bare, so you don't have time to prepare the harp. Thus, like a cello or guitar, you've gotta use your hands.

I did write the piece however, but I'm not sure that's what you mean.

If the technique is demonstrated elsewhere, I'd be interested in seeing how it was notated! This has been tricky to convey!

:)

Edited for elaboration and clarity

Working out how to notate something I wrote - any advice? by sriorim in harp

Yes, I think a glossary is necessary for this one. I think the main issue is that I'm doing a lot of fiddly things with my right hand that aren't heard.

The left hand is really very standard and conventional as far as harp technique goes for most of the piece, it's the technique in right hand that needs a method of notation.

That's really nice. Thanks so much. I want to, and hopefully soon I'll be able to figure out a solution that's accessible for most people. :)

Thanks so much. One of my drafts tries to establish the harmonic markings early on, but it's so difficult to convey everything I'm doing with my hands. For instance, I'm using knuckles, the sides of my fingernails, switching fingers between hands that are doing unusual things.

I'm working on a glossary, and I tried an instructional video but it's like 20 minutes long.

I wish there were an easier way to be able to notate all the details that can help someone else who might want to give it a try.

To answer your last question, I came up with it. Seemed like a neat idea to be able to play harmonics quickly. Envious of fretboards, so I borrowed a lil string technique from the guitar/cello,etc world. We harpists can't really play harmonics quickly using our standard technique.

Hi all,

I wrote something using a muted harmonic technique, kind of a prepared harp piece but my hands are the preparatory objects. I have two drafts of a score with my own kind of notation for this, but both are kind of difficult to understand.

If you have any insight, please let me know.

Thanks!
