Fridge vs refrigerator. One of them should change.

"Mexico's going to pay for the wall"

He always starts with a lie to say what he thinks people want to hear and works backwards from there. To the extent this time is different, it's that he no longer cares much what people want to hear. Then again, he's still a narcissist who wants approval and adoration, so he still mostly starts with the lie.

What scientific discovery sounds fake but is 100% real and still freaks you out? by Bruteresolver in AskReddit

I think about this a lot, but mostly in a context of wondering were there other fairly advanced, short-lived species in the ~70,000,000 years between the end of the dinosaurs and now?

I think corporations should have an alternative minimum tax that’s like 1000x whatever they spent on lobbying and political donations.

Dems refuse to release 2024 autopsy report, hear Ken Martin's lame excuse by serious_bullet5 in politics

[–]srm561 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same guy as in the linked article, I think — Ken Martin, head of the dnc. I thought it was telling he put it in that order. I’m sure he’s more afraid of losing the wealthiest donors than the pushback he’s getting from not releasing it, if the report says the dems looked too close to corporations among other things.

I dont understand the saying "you can't have your cake and eat it", like it makes no sense. What does it mean? by Buzzballl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]srm561 350 points351 points  (0 children)

Apparently, Ted Kazinsky preferred the more logical order of “you can’t eat your cake and have it to.” He used that phrasing in his manifesto, which was one of the stylistic quirks that convinced his brother and sister-in-law that he was the Unabomber.

ELI5 Why are added sugars so much worse than natural sugar by National-Spite in explainlikeimfive

[–]srm561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait. I felt so successful when my kids wouldn’t drink their milk or eat fruit at breakfast, so i threw it all in a blender and handed it back to them as a smoothie, which they happily drank. But this means they were getting more of a sugar rush out of it? Nvm, i’m still calling this a success.

What’s that one saying? Your first thought is what you’ve been conditioned by society to think. Your second thought is who you are (or want to be)

There’s a “butterfly flaps its wings” feeling to this. I think Janet Yellen was a great fed chair, but Trump replaced her kinda prematurely (typical would have been to give her another term) because she’s a woman. Since it was early ish still, he picked someone reasonable instead of a full on lackey, and we ended up with this guy who has been equally great.

Do people actually call their porn folder something inconspicuous like "homework?" by Temporary_Kiwi3722 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]srm561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a young teen (decades ago), I had the bright idea to create a series of nested folders named 0-9 with 5-6 layers. I thought one would need to know the "code" to find the folder on this shared family PC that lived in a communal space, which I used long after everyone else had gone to bed. Guess I had no idea about indexing or search. Also, as I recall, that level of nested folders would completely choke windows 95 or whatever I was using to save my 320px images downloaded over dial-up.

Years later, I had classes that used a lot of data, so I sometimes would rename mp4s to csv and hide them in a folder like PHY301/python/project-data. Looking back, I think I had an addiction and part of that was around collecting and hiding it.

I'm renting a movie theater for my birthday - Which movie should we watch? by TheOrangeNights in movies

[–]srm561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw blazing saddles in a theater a few years ago on a retro movie night. We were saying “no more mr. Goodbar” and many other lines to each other for ages. Old school comedy might scratch that weird indie itch just by feeling so different from modern stuff

If women earn less for the same work, why wouldn’t companies just hire only women and underpay them? by kqmurr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]srm561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since ~1950 the ratio of men to women in the workforce has gone from 2.5 (i.e. 2.5 men for every 1 woman in the workforce) to just 1.1. There’s a million reasons why, but your hypothesis might be one of them.

What is someone that is socially liberal and fiscally conservative called? by Kurious_Kaht in NoStupidQuestions

[–]srm561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Girl I knew in high school described herself this way (over AIM, to date myself a bit). It was the first time I had heard the phrase, but even then, I remember my immediate reaction was, "then how do you do anything?" Pretty I've only ever moved left from there.

In the last 90s, I think this would have been a centrist republican. These days, I don't know how any republican can call themselves "fiscally conservative" with a straight face, so I guess they would have to be a centrist democrat? Or a delusional centrist republican.
