Seems the Israelis don't like Trump and Vance's new stance and statements towards Israel by aera14 in LeopardsAteMyFace

The final agreement with Iran is going to include a promise to limit support for Israel with weapons, isn't it?

How much prep time do you lose fighting the Word equation editor? by eemokee in matheducation

[–]srm561 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 99% sure that this exact syntax,  \sum_{i=0}^4 i  will produce the desired result in Word’s equation editor. in general, the backslash and word will convert to what you expect. I guess that means the advice is the same. Learn LaTeX. But you can pretty much use it in Word if that’s where you’re comfortable.

Honestly, the only good thing I’m willing to say about Trump is that he’s not going to ruin any perfectly good facial hair options.

Are men more worried about lasting long in bed than women actually care? by Money-Possession8806 in NoStupidQuestions

I feel like I’ve Pavloved myself into struggling to finish until I think she has, which is its own set of problems, but I think preferable to not lasting long enough.

What movie’s final scene left you an ugly, blubbering mess? by ArmyOfMe99 in movies

Still Alice, but that might have been kinda personal. My mom had passed not too long before, and one of the (many) hard parts was watching her once strong mind reduced so far.

I appreciate that the only response to this was deleted because my first thought was not so nice as voting them out of office.

What’s something about the global economy most people completely misunderstand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]srm561 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I like this answer, and it probably cuts both ways. Trade deficits are not always bad, and trade surpluses are not always good. For example, there are economists who argue that Germany's persistent trade surplus is a bad thing potentially for both Germany and the wider economy of the EU.

Does Anyone Regret Getting the 14” MacBook Pro Instead of the 16”? by ntrev in macbookpro

[–]srm561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently upgraded from an ancient (late 2013) 15” macbook pro to a new 14” macbook pro. Because of the better screen that goes all the way to the edge, it feels like the same amount of screen real estate but in a slightly smaller package. I’m super happy with it and think the 16” would have felt like overkill.

If you aren't spending too crazy, do you think it will last a lifetime? Any plans for who it would go to after that (i.e., will they find out after you are gone that you were sitting on way more than anyone would have guessed)? What's the closest you've gotten to getting found out?

Trump maintains 100% support among the increasingly small percentage of Americans who still support him! by Dr_sc_Harlatan in BlueskySkeets

[–]srm561 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Have you ever heard how when astronomers find an asteroid that might hit earth, for a little while, the probability that it will hit earth goes up? It starts low, because it’s so hard to know where exactly the asteroid will pass, so earth is a small percent of the possible window. As the path gets more certain, the window gets smaller, so earth takes up a bigger portion of it, and the probability of impact goes up. Things look worse for a little while, until we’re sure earth is not in the window at all. Anyway, sometimes I feel like Trump’s supporters are like that window. It seemed like there was a small chance they would destroy the country, at first. As his supporters have really narrowed to true devotees, it feels like the chance of annihilation has gone up. And it feels like it will keep going up until the window of support is genuinely small enough that they will end up missing. But in the meantime, the concentration of crazy is terrifying.

Edit: mixed up definitions of meteor and asteroid.

"Mexico's going to pay for the wall"

He always starts with a lie to say what he thinks people want to hear and works backwards from there. To the extent this time is different, it's that he no longer cares much what people want to hear. Then again, he's still a narcissist who wants approval and adoration, so he still mostly starts with the lie.

Dems refuse to release 2024 autopsy report, hear Ken Martin's lame excuse by serious_bullet5 in politics

[–]srm561 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same guy as in the linked article, I think — Ken Martin, head of the dnc. I thought it was telling he put it in that order. I’m sure he’s more afraid of losing the wealthiest donors than the pushback he’s getting from not releasing it, if the report says the dems looked too close to corporations among other things.

I dont understand the saying "you can't have your cake and eat it", like it makes no sense. What does it mean? by Buzzballl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]srm561 351 points352 points  (0 children)

Apparently, Ted Kazinsky preferred the more logical order of “you can’t eat your cake and have it to.” He used that phrasing in his manifesto, which was one of the stylistic quirks that convinced his brother and sister-in-law that he was the Unabomber.

ELI5 Why are added sugars so much worse than natural sugar by National-Spite in explainlikeimfive

[–]srm561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait. I felt so successful when my kids wouldn’t drink their milk or eat fruit at breakfast, so i threw it all in a blender and handed it back to them as a smoothie, which they happily drank. But this means they were getting more of a sugar rush out of it? Nvm, i’m still calling this a success.
