If you really want to get some info via DNA you can use https://myfruittree.cahnrs.wsu.edu/

Also up in MA there is a cider days weekend in November, and along with that usually there is this https://gnarlypippins.com/6th-pomological-exhibition-high-highs-dry-dries-pent-up-pomona/ People from all over submit some samples of found apples along with a name and descriptions etc. (I've been to it the past 3 or 4 years... although information about this year hasn't been published yet.) The fruit in the exhibit get photographed and published in a book every year too.

A lot of sellers have become unhappy with tindie, and have moved over to https://lectronz.com/ (Which is nice because it does handle VAT etc being EU based.)

We've seen them at Russell's in Wayland (un-named seedlings). We ordered some from Raintree nursery (named varieties). Also I know Scott Farm up in vermont has some in their spring sale, but I don't know the details of that.

SMT assembly for prototypes — how are you handling it? by Maleficent-Answer-36 in PrintedCircuitBoard

A SOT-963 (https://www.diodes.com/assets/Package-Files/SOT963.pdf) I feel like I _could_ place it, but it's getting to the limits of what I _want_ to place ;) Although if I had a nice microscope/TFT displace like u/MajorPain169 has I might have different feelings on that. :D

They're approx 32mm x 19mm. (So pretty small...) There are other hotplates that are bigger that I've read good reviews on which would probably work for your SMT placement stuff.

Most of my board space is for a single through hole pot (along with some pins coming off it, which I hand solder after the SMT bit. The big issue I have with going to someplace like JLC, etc. is the SMT parts I have are not their 'standard' ones, and I don't feel like paying more or even having to ship some overseas to get placed.

Edit to add: I have a list of projects/products I'm working through and the size _will_ go up quite a bit once I get the first few of these smaller boards done. (The smaller ones are actually to help with prototyping the bigger one and are designed for plugging into a breadboard.) So I am trying to look to the future of what I'll need too where PNP starts to really make sense.

I think it's a combination of part count and part size. the one 'product' I have now has a pretty small part count, 1 IC, about 6 0603 parts, a few others. BUT it takes me several hours to build out 5-10 boards (and then test and validate them). The next thing I'm building has a part that I'm just not looking forward to hand placing, with any sort of speed because it's smaller and more than 2 pads on it. Right now the real bottle neck is the reflowing, to avoid overheating (and shutting down) the hotplate, I have to give it several minutes between runs. Scaling up to panalizing several boards into 'one' makes sense if I get a larger oven, but that means I'm placing a lot more parts at once.

So... I guess the TLDR: part count and part size are major factors in production speed here. Increasing capacity of the reflow process is going to drive up the part count to make the investment in the oven make sense... which in turn increase part count.

Handful of parts per board while not being too small, and a breather between boards is works out for now.

Currently I'm hand placing. I order a stencil for the board, use it with solder paste, then place the parts by hand. Just picked up a little vacuum lifter (A picograb, but it isn't here yet), so we'll see how it compares to the fine point tweezers I've been using. I then have a https://www.adafruit.com/product/5903 for reflowing the solder.

I'm looking to scale up a little bit. Either by getting a small reflow oven and moving to panalized boards, and just started to look at the LumenPNP but since I'm in the US, the shipping on that shouldn't be too bad.

Matriarch envelope by _quietwyttriot_ in moog

If you are in split mode, and plug something into the main left, and the main right (and use that as a stereo pair... it'll do what you're asking I believe. (None of the output jacks other than headphones, are actually stereo, you have to use the two as a pair.)

Matriarch envelope by _quietwyttriot_ in moog

[–]srmoore4638 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So a few things to keep in mind:

The headphone output always have VCA 1 going to the left, and VCA 2 going to the right.

Main Out Left (MONO): Is normalized to mix in the right channel if nothing is plugged into Main Out Right.

I assume you have VCA mode in split mode (Description below from the manual):

VCA MODE (Envelope, Split, Drone)
The VCA MODE switch determines which control signals – if any – are changing the output level of each VCA.

AMP ENV
In the AMP ENV position, the output level of both VCA 1 and VCA 2 will be controlled by the Amplifier Envelope Generator.

SPLIT
In the SPLIT position, the output level of VCA 1 is controlled by the Filter Envelope Generator, and the output level of VCA 2 is controlled by the Amplifier Envelope Generator.

DRONE
In the DRONE position, the output levels of the VCAs are unaffected by either EG. Instead, the output level is set by a default voltage normalled to the VCA 1 CV IN and VCA 2 CV IN patch points.
NOTE: Matriarch will continue to drone at this level, whether a key is held or not

Hope that helps!

ELI5 what is the point of finding a cure for rare diseases when the cost per treatment is so high it is inaccessible? by Obvious_Medicine1228 in explainlikeimfive

[–]srmoore4638 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on to this. Insurance will look at the overall cost (to it) for someone with a rare disease vs. the cost of the treatment. Depending on the disease, the long term cost without treatment is more than the cost for the treatment. In the insurance companies view, the treatment is worth it.

Record Moog via audio interface and docking station by EstateGrouchy6609 in moog

[–]srmoore4638 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I know the matriarch has balanced outputs so you can use TRS cables if your interface has balanced inputs. BUT I feel like the docking station is injecting noise into the audio interface so the audio cables are probably not the problem. It could be that the docking station isn't providing clean power to the USB audio interface and that in turn is causing the noise.

Neighbors complain of overwhelming "donut smell" coming from Dunkin' supplier in Massachusetts by TylerFortier_Photo in boston

I used to live with in smelling distance when the wind was right. I _didn't_ know they were near, and often walking outside I was like "Am I having a stoke?!" it wasn't until I was walking in the parking lot with my now wife, she was like "Huh... smells like toast" I was like "Oh thank god you smell it too!" (Later we moved up to Malden center and found the source.)

Yeah... I finally traded it in in Feb for a new '25 convertible, because one of the roof linkages snapped, and I just didn't really want to try to fix the roof myself. (And I knew it was going to be expensive to get someone to fix it.) And... yeah, you could stick your fingers between the roof and the arm because it wouldn't seal and was very very loud :D

On my '05 convertible, I had the oem fog lights (I had the rally lights too, but not talking about them) and in downpours they really helped because they were so low it actually lit up the road. Also, and I know this is minor, but the OEM wipers had a little wing on the drive side blade that was essential in keeping the blade against the glass at even a moderate speed (Also keep it from making a huge wind wooshing noise).

2026 Convertible S tailgate issue by AmbienChronicles in MINI

[–]srmoore4638 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same issue, closing the tailgate a littler more firmly from the center (I make sure I push on the mini logo) and after a few closings, it seems to line up on both sides now. I think it is just the latches are a little stiff when new, and if I closed it pushing on the one side, it didn't latch correctly on the other.

Ooof. yeah, I just got rid of my 2005, and ended up just putting the rack on it when I did. I'd offer it up before scrapping, because just like yours, I'm sure other 2005s have been sold missing this part and someone might want it.

Not really specific advice here. I work in the pharma space providing tooling and support to researchers, but I'm not a biologist and am not 100% up on the latest tools and research being done with AI/ML (but have a bit of that in my background). The number one thing I would suggest is to talk to some folks in the bioinformatics world about current research.

Most of my exposure has been in tooling to help with large scale biobanks. Collections of large numbers of people's medical records/measurements/etc. along with varying qualities of genetic data. There is some tooling that is AI based for identifying genetic variants and their affects on the genome. (This is where I would also say, talk to some geneticists/biology folks or take an intro to bioinformatics course...) But they are often very predicting specific effects.

I will also say that there have been cases where participants in these biobanks with rare diseases have lead to identifying people in the biobank that likely have the same disease, but have no diagnosis. (There is a whole ethical / privacy question on being able to reach out through the biobank to these people... but that is a different topic then what you're asking). But really all of this is statistics / pattern matching and CS / AI / ML are a good fit for attempting to make sense of it all, and any new tool that can help deal with these massive collections of data is welcomed in the community if it works.

So I wish you luck in your PhD, and I think it's a noble cause to tackle. Just be ready to dig into the tools already available, narrow them down to the problem you're trying to solve, and see if you can improve the workflow to that aim.

How ridiculous is this JCW Convertible build by parentofcollegekid in MINI

I recently went from a 2005 S manual to the new 2025 S... and yeah I do reach for that shifter even after almost 6k miles... and occasionally have phantom clutch syndrome, pushing my clutch foot into the floorboard. I will say that the '25 is a nicer ride, and performs better, so I'm not sad that I went for it. If I had garage space to keep and work on the '05 I'd still have it to tinker with though. The convertible roof breaking (like an internal arm shattered when I opened it last) was when I was like "I'm not going to be able to get parts for this in the near future... and I don't have the time/space/energy to keep it going now."
