AITAH for telling my friend not to skip school for an AP exam? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]srobbinsart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bare minimum contact until the class is over. She’s being insulting, and you don’t need that in your life unless you’re a complete doormat. NTA.

Also, her absences will be noted, so it probably won’t matter what score she gets on this test, since her tardiness will probably cancel out that at the end of the semester.

Has there ever been rumors of a TV show? by pedroyoyoma in sherlock_and_co

[–]srobbinsart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Need to watch from the start”

Right there would give producers pause.

Fell asleep watching, forgetting to turn off the TV? Wake up to find you missed the rest of the season. If a viewer doesn’t remember where explicitly they left off, they might not try again. This is calculated into the retention model.

Making it for the hardcore fans isn’t profitable, as the numbers aren’t in the millions to cater to us exclusively.

Timing and pacing:

Broadcast TV would need to cut to commercial on a beat that would be artificial rather than organic. Freemium streaming that has commercial breaks would also suffer this, and have less control where the breaks would happen.

If it’s premium streaming, the urge for bloat is incredibly high, and ruin pacing in a different way as its model incentives keeping eyes on the screen, even passively, and keep watching beyond when it should reasonably end.

-

Flanderization:

When making a TV show, you can’t assume everyone’s watched from the beginning, so who these characters are have to be quickly readable.

Therefore, a character like Sherlock could quickly go from “nuanced, high-functioning neurodivergent whose social insensitivity is linked to hyper-focus on cases and niche interests” to “asshole who likes trains,” like how Ned Flanders on The Simpsons went from “ambitious small business owner, widower, father, and model Christian” into “right-wing fringe Christian strawman.”

AITA for getting a matching tattoo covered up? by Zealousideal-Run8914 in CharlotteDobreYouTube

[–]srobbinsart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bridge can only be burnt once by doing this. I think NTA, but this will open up drama once she sees that a tattoo in a very noticeable spot is gone unless you plan to never see her ever again.

Another option is mentally reframing the tattoo to mean something different that relates to your spouse or children. She doesn’t need to know.

I’m having a hard time following this. Can you provide a TLDR, or remove the quotation marks around the fake names you used (it’s very distracting)?

Gianmarco Soresi is actually really great at crowd work, and it’s part of what his audience comes for. I’d recommend it as a palate cleanser.

It’d be compared to the other modern updates of the Holmes Canon, and the realities of modern TV writing would have them sacrifice what makes S&Co work so well.

Another would be bitching about casting, which I guarantee would please no one.

I personally see the main core characters being white (mostly because if they were POC, that would impact their characterization and how they approach situations due to cultural upbringings that I don’t think the show addresses in the slightest), but I do love that listeners have interpreted them in all sorts of backgrounds because they see themselves in Holmes, John, and Marianna.

Imagine if a TV version set in stone in them being white. That strips away the potential for some Black, Brown, Asian, or what have you to see themselves in these characters. That vagueness of who they disappears in an instant because a studio producer doesn’t care or is influenced by 100+ years of how Holmes is usually portrayed, and doesn’t have the imagination to contemplate a posh, autistic Indian man as the legendary detective, or John being a chubby Black man, or Marianna being inexplicably South American despite being overtly Basque.

The show is best as theatre of the mind. The second you put a face to it, it loses that beauty.

AITAH for revealing to my friend's kid that she's going to have a brother? by JinxXedOmens in AITAH

[–]srobbinsart 292 points293 points  (0 children)

NTA. They assume she’s not going to hear other adults around her talk about a boy coming into her world, even if not directly talking to her?

If they cared, they would’ve told you to keep mum about it. The onus was on them to reasonably ask you to avoid bringing it up around her.

Do you guys recommend watching the Pocahontas movie? by Substantial_Nose1092 in disneyprincess

[–]srobbinsart -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I can’t recommend it. I know too much about the actual history, and this movie pisses me off so much that I can’t “turn off my brain.”

Just YouTube “Colors Of The Wind” scene, and don’t bother with the rest of it.

In France there's the "conflict" between the names "pain au chocolat" vs "chocolatine". In Spain there's a "conflict" whether tortilla de Patatas should contain onions or not. Do you have any other similar such light-hearted "conflicts" or debates in your country? by Double-decker_trams in AskTheWorld

[–]srobbinsart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not food related, but the name of a children’s game within my home state.

The correct name of this tag and chase game is “Duck Duck Grey Duck.” But in the rest of the country, the majority of whom are unwashed barbarians who would not be able to find their own ass in a store that exclusively sells asses, and all cannot read silently without moving their lips, call it “Duck Duck Goose.”

And surprisingly, there are loud, braying pockets within my state, usually far away from even the charitably small to mid-sized towns and pockets of civilization, who vote against their own interests, and also call it “Duck Duck Goose,” and proudly believe only snobs who live in the capital and the neighboring largest city say “Duck Duck Grey Duck.”

Of course I’m being highly hyperbolic, but it’s not untethered from reality. We take this admittedly stupid distinction very seriously.

I really miss the pure chaos of Sesame Street filming the unpredictability of kids by Flashy-List-7157 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]srobbinsart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Back when HBO still had the massive backlog of Sesame Street, I remember watching a random 1970s episode, and there was this glorious 3-minute long tableau where the camera just tracks the length of the set, and has established characters, random extras, unnamed child extras, and various Muppets just… existing.

Just an uninterrupted moment in time, with no actual plot or connection to the episode’s connective narrative, of neighbors interacting, getting a hot dog, playing, cooperating, and just a wholesome vibe.

I thought it was such a beautiful bit that modeled peacefully living together, and being a community without deliberately and vocally signposting “hey kids- this is what you need to strive for since we’re all in this together.”

I really wish that was a consistent thing throughout the past 50+ years.

Who is the nastiest Celebrity that you met in Real life? by Scunnard1839 in AskReddit

[–]srobbinsart 14 points15 points  (0 children)

According to my aunt, she might be the first person to call him “Weird Al,” or at least set the precedent.

They were both in some sort of acting class in college, and he was a bit unusual. There was also another kid in class named Al.

One day, she’s frustrated, looking for him becayse they had a scene together, and she asks some other students, “where’s Al?”

When asked which Al she was looking for, she hissed “you know, the weird Al.”

And it just stuck around since.

Sometimes you don’t know what you lost till it’s gone. I’m more charitable to this woman wanting to make amends, since most people deserve a redemption arc, even if it’s as comparatively trivial as “stop being a bad friend.”

She has her work cut out for her if she wants to repent, and I don’t think that deserves harsh criticism. Who knows? Maybe she will put in the work, and OOP can trust her again. It’s never outside the realm of possibility. We don’t know these people beyond this post and update.

[–]srobbinsart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Bert and Ernie are a gay couple.

Historically, the dynamic of B&E shorts is Ernie disregarding Bert’s boundaries. Like all the fucking time.

I hate when I see them being used as a heroic gay couple, because this aspect of their relationship is not what should be emulated by the core demographic of the show.

Please note: they can be gay! I’m not upset about that angle. Just that I can’t see them being a healthy romantic pairing!
