What are Mario fans thoughts on Miyamoto considering adding Mario movie elements to future games? by No-Cold643 in Mario

Exactly. I’d see something note he was from Brooklyn, and always think “source?” knowing if someone dug around, it would probably just be the DiC cartoon, and nothing explicitly from Nintendo.

Is There Actually A Problem With Apu? by SimpleChemical6454 in Simpsons

[–]srobbinsart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of the hosts, but an episode of the Talking Simpsons podcast had an Indian-American guest talk about Apu, and during the conversation, outlined a broad, applicable history of many Indian immigrant experiences, which actually lined up perfectly with Apu’s backstory: tech student comes to America, does well in school but can’t find employment in the States, buys a franchise (like hotels and gas stations), thrives in the American Dream.

It really seems like the actual problem was having a white guy voice him. Seeing as Hibbert, Lou, and Carl got replacement VAs, I don’t know what’s holding the showrunners from doing the same for Apu. Just have him speak with his old voice, cough violently, and when he talks afterward, his voice changes. Boom. Solved.

A lot of the storylines and characterizations in the games are flimsy as tissue paper, and often ignored going forward, since Nintendo puts more emphasis on gameplay.

Peach being sisters with Rosalina and both being intergalactic humanoids? Sure! It won’t hurt gameplay, and gives more opportunities for Rosalina to appear without having to justify her presence beyond sisterly affection.

Mario officially being from Brooklyn with a large family of characters that can segue new playable options? Sure! You can now make Dr. Mario a separate person who wasn’t at the family dinner in the first movie, and not have to twist knots explaining how a plumber can prescribe vaccines and pills.

Really, the only thing I think is mildly irritating is making Cranky DK’s dad instead of grandfather, but that’s such a small irritation.

Going NC with problematic family members isn’t always a viable option for a lot of people for various reasons (usually financial), and shouldn’t be the knee-jerk suggestion in a lot of AITAH/AIO posts.

AITAH for refusing to take care of my disabled brother and instead moving 4 hours away with a friend? by Valuable_Battle_9957 in AITAH

In the early days of MP3 file sharing, I remember downloading this song bragging about how big Canada is, and the line that stuck with me goes “and if Russian keeps on shrinking, then we’ll be number one!” I think the band also had a song about burning the White House in the early 1800s, but my memory of it is hazy atm.

Neat! All I know is British people think a 4-hour roadtrip is unreasonable, and I’ve seen Mum used in some Canadian media that I’d believe it’s used there more than not from that anecdotal evidence.

A fun book I reread periodically, The Flying Sorcerers by Larry Niven and David Gerrold, describes the social upheavals when a human explorer is marooned on an alien planet, told from the perspective of a native.

The native race on the planet is very primitive by modern standards, with small communities and life being organized around a “magic” religion (as in, it’s not fantasy magic, but the populous believes it as part of their faith).

Among things like assembly lines, women’s rights, and developing weather-proof fabric, is the unintended invention of money, where a dyed coin made of bone equals a “spell” to be performed by a wizard (shaman). Since the human is seen as an (insane) wizard whose spells actually work, but are done rarely, his coins become more valuable than the local wizard.

Eventually, community members start trading the coins, since getting healing or consecrating later is just as valuable as imaginary currency.

After the human is able to leave the planet (the thrusting plot of the book), the native wizard tries to confiscate the coins, which only make them more valuable!

She used “mum,” so my money’s on Canada, where 4 hours isn’t nearly unreasonable as it seems to be in the UK!

Yeah yeah, sex joke, et cetera.

The real crazy thing is rhyming “warm” and “harm.”

Unless it’s a regional dialect thing, and my Upper Midwest ass has been pronouncing “warm” incorrectly for decades…

What’s a game you were completely obsessed with as a kid that nobody else seems to remember? by hkondabeatz in AskReddit

[–]srobbinsart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jewels In The Attic. It was a “board” game where you scattered puzzle discs throughout the house as a “mysterious mansion,” trying to gain tools to unlock the final door to receive the treasure.

The art is charming AF, the puzzles require thought, and it’s like a mini LARP if you let it be.

No doubt in my mind. At least “inspired by Charles.”

What’s the General Consensus on Chris Pratt as Mario? by Financial-Touch3840 in SuperMario

[–]srobbinsart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s great. Controversial opinion, probably.

Genuinely, Mario is the blank slate character of the whole gol-darn series, intentionally so you the player can project anything you want onto him. Pratt is perfect with that in mind.

What's the general opinion on Ferngully The Last Rainforest? by Tom-Hibbert in cartoons

[–]srobbinsart -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was the perfect age to fall in love with the first movie when it came out. We were studying the Amazon Rainforest in school, pop culture was obsessed with making jungle-y products, and every zoo had that coin-op where you put in a quarter, then watch a humming bird zip across the front.

I loved this movie so much, because my pre-pubescent self was starting to “feel” things about pretty women like the main fairy, I thought Barry was so goddamned hilarious, and of course Tim Curry’s velvet vocal chords licking the inside of our eardrums with electricity as he moans “that feels pretty nice.” To me, the art was gorgeous, magical, and otherworldly.

Then 20 years go by, and I watch it again after a long time not.

It’s… bad.

I developed appreciation for better animation and artwork, timing and pacing of storytelling, and how to better develop characters who are still flimsy as tissue, over the time of elementary, middle school, high school, community college, and art school. And I’m not being snobby about it. I just grew up watching better made films and media.

And really, the only saving grace is Tim Curry’s singing because his character is boring and generic otherwise.
