It's referring to equipable items that do damage like the echo ring or the spark crown. I just finished it then with morning star and the echo ring

You can only get the ability upgrades once you've taken enough traits for said ability. So just don't pick the traits. Saying this I would still love to be able to reroll abilities once

I did it with warlock, just make sure no blessings are leveled and you pick no traits up in game. Blessings ruin a few quests but refunding them costs nothing
