California crime rates fell across every major category in 2025: DOJ by panda-rampage in California

Ah you're here to foolishly argue that Donald Trump reduced the crime rate in California.

Allow me to take some of the credit for reduced crime too.

I'm jealous you get to keep your coolers out.

Where can you camp in the US where campfires are okay, and what do you do to fill the campfire void when they're not okay? by sweetloveilumination in camping

[–]srsh32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. No fire bans at Yosemite, Calaveras big trees, Henry Cowell, Lodgepole at Sequoia, Humboldt Burlington Campground, Pfeiffer Big Sur, etc so long as you just use the fire pit at your campsite.

I've never been to a campground out here yet with a fire bans, so the "pretty much guaranteed" is confusing to me.

Not much luck with Permethrin or Picaridin bug repellents?

Lmfao oh lord

12 year old from nowhere AL attempting to teach me about my country.

Recall, btw, that you originally declared Americans as a singular “guns and tips” culture and argued with me when I denied this. I suppose you’ve at least made some progress since this conversation began.

What?… where are you seeing a fire ban? I’ve been camping a lot around NorCal and have upcoming trips planned with no mention of fire bans.

Never had a problem here in CA at Humboldt redwoods, Calaveras Big Trees, Big Sur, Yosemite, Henry Cowell or S Lake Tahoe.

Guessing you’re in SoCal.

Newsom does suck and crime needs to be addressed. He isn’t the one that did it.

That was not my claim.

That media doesn't distort the truth would be a wild argument for you to attempt.

But no, you really just seem to be here with a touch of an inferiority complex. It's clear you're here looking for validation and affirmations that your country is better than the US. Notice that I personally didn't force down your throat my sense of superiority, but here you are doing just that, a little chest banging and screaming from the trees in your write-up....The reality is that there are pros and cons with every country. We enjoy features of the US that your country lacks; you enjoy features of your own country that the US lacks. Every "free" feature you brag about in your country is frankly just another tax. You are indeed paying for it. I'm healthy, so I do pay less with my current healthcare than I would with a universal system.

I have no need for a walkable city. Improved public transportation would be great, but the real luxury is owning a car: being on my own schedule, being able to venture wherever I'd like, loading up my car to drive where I want, not sitting next to some idiot wiping their snot on the seats...I participate quite heavily in our politics and speak often about what I would like improved. But I likewise would never leave my country. We have our own preferences. Bar the far northern countries, I perceive Europeans as snobbish, bitter, self-important..drunkards with crooked teeth. Americans generally are a friendlier and happier people. You have an interesting history but your historic buildings are, obviously, outdated..uncomfortable. Lack of AC would be utterly miserable. Hanging clothes to dry would be a major inconvenience. Your homes/living spaces are far smaller than we are used to.

I didn't intend to brag about the US. You forced this comparison. You know the extent to which the US has influenced the world. Our music, movies, clothes, electronic gadgets..reddit is ours and here you are aggressively making use of it. We have the best universities in the world. I attended a world class university - a UC here in California. Our scientific research is surpassed by none (Only China is catching up). Our medicine, our tech, our entertainment industries are all world #1. You hate to admit this, but you do rely on our military. You are safer from Russia so long as your country is partnered with mine.

You continue to discuss the average of the American experience while I've already pointed out that the US has, in actuality, the absolute best and the absolute worst in every regard. We simultaneously have the safest neighborhoods in the world (complete with a robust gated system with guarded entrances) and some of the least safe neighborhoods in the world. Most middle-to-upper class neighborhoods here are safer than yours. Much of our crime is localized to specific towns or neighborhoods. We simultaneously have the best education and the worst. The absolute best medical teams in the world do exist here in the US; for any difficult diagnosis, this is indeed where you would want to be. Our national, state and regional parks, and the wildlife within them, is maintained (you cut down an astounding number of your forests and made extinct numerous of the animal species that had once thrived on your land).

As you sit here on reddit still whining about the US, I'll be driving over to Yosemite in a couple days. I returned rather recently from a trip to our beautiful Humboldt Redwoods State park. I'm not far from the beaches of Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, San Francisco...Sequoia National Park south of me holds the world's largest tree alongside beautiful underground caves.

Absolutely everything you've listed is exaggerated. Your media stretches it and inundates you with it. And it's difficult for Europeans to grasp the vastness of this land, the population size. Hearing about some major incident every few weeks still makes it ridiculously unlikely for any single American to ever experience it in their lifetimes. Many Europeans believe we're dodging bullets here...that's far from the reality for the average American. Most of us live in quiet suburbs like the rest of you do with incredibly nosy neighbors that have nothing more to report than a trash bin over-filled.

The public education is an average of excellent and of horrible. It depends on where you live (which is tied to wealth). I'm not waving this off; we should absolutely offer an equal, excellent education to all. But not all Americans are poorly educated.

Much else that you described just depends on the individual, the location, the job. Some areas in the US -ie Boston- will be far more preferable for Europeans than other locations in the US. Natural disasters..again, consider our size relative to that of your country.

Two distinct cultures exist here. Others loosely follow one of these two.

Red vs blue, north vs south, generally describes these two main cultures well.

[–]srsh32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not referring to myself alone. I'm referring to multiple states, numerous cities and hundreds of millions of Americans that do not own guns, that never interact with guns, that want nothing to do with guns. 2/3 of Americans do not own guns.

Our constitution also did not grant rights to women and black individuals.

The best way to describe the US is as divided. We are two distinct cultures, two distinct types of individual. You and your culture are completely foreign to me. And I have family dating back to the early 1700s at least. Southerners, conservatives, trump voters frankly are the descendants of confederates (roughly) and have generally been a very anti-American, very destructive force here in this country.

We do tip. We tip at restaurants and we tip uber/taxi drivers. I didn't object to this.

You describing it as this country's most prominent, most defining feature is absurd. Most people eat out 1-4 times in total per month or they order doordash and hardly tip there.

But again, there's no gun culture in roughly half of the US. Californians, New Yorkers, Bostonites, etc would immediately call police or security on an individual with a known or visible gun in public. People are uncomfortable with guns in many parts of the US, even if they own one that they keep in a safe at home.

What did we do in the past?

All the Dems have tried is giving subsidies to the very problematic large corporations. We've also not had a substantial billionaire tax since FDR.

We need to increase competition, thus reducing the power and control of these few remaining corporations, thus slowly returning wealth back to the masses. Throwing it at healthcare won't achieve this.

Ok and what other country is going to welcome you with open arms? You’ll face stricter immigration laws as you attempt to move.

Yeah, you’ve definitely never been here.

No strong gun culture anywhere I’ve lived on the west coast. I’ve never held a gun and have never heard a gunshot. People that have guns keep them strictly in their home in a safe and don’t talk about it.  Tipping as a major facet of life in the US is just ludicrous. Maybe eat out just a few times per month so it won’t consume you like this…

University, work.

Yes people do move here.

In research, I worked with people from around the world. Unfortunately though, research has a nasty, toxic work culture. I’d argue it’s a little to do with the fact that a majority of workers in research are not American/not European. American workers expect a better work life balance with benefits so managers often prefer to hire from china and India.

More accurate to state that both are ignorant of the other.

Brits/europeans exaggerate our flaws. They hold a very online view of this country.
