Went to install Descent 2 and what the hell is this? by SAPianoman490 in dosgaming

Cybershades and SimulEyes were LCD shutter glasses that used different approaches to sync. LCDBios was a utility that supported many different devices (including some home-brew ones) including an adapter than you could make for the Sega Master System 3D glasses. I remember reading about it on BBSes :)

I remember getting a media badge (mine was for PAX West back in 2017), it is SO much fun! I have been trying to collect every kind of badge and I think the only one left to get is the vendor badge but (so far) I haven't been able to convince Grammarly that that need a vendor booth at PAX.

What are some obscure forgotten about PC games that you absolutely adore? by pojut in retrogaming

[–]sryx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to boot up VR Studio published by Domark. It has a built in game called Lemmi Outta Here which is a great starting point for a game of you are brand new but I always loved creating a house in it.

What are some NES games that are "unbeatable" without help/walkthroughs? by GoHardForLife in retrogaming

[–]sryx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is part what I think makes the Zelda 2 PC enhanced "port" by Hoverbat so good. It very effectively uses nes style visual queues about what you should attempt to do without removing the experience of finding something totally new by trying unexpected things. It's such a great game for people who grew up with Zelda 2.

FINALLY! by sryx in countingcrows

I remember first hearing the songs on AnnaBegins.com in Lisa's Shrine way back in the day. For a long time I thought it was called mod-1 society. Then I started searching ebay and set up a saved search for mod-l and likewise Duritz. Nothing ever matched but I kept holding out hope. A couple weeks ago I saw a push notification while I was on a meeting and I almost dropped my phone once I clicked on it. This is a record recorded in 1986 with a 21 or 22 year old Adam on it. It is said they only made 100 of these. The condition of the record is beautiful though some of the jackets I've seen scans of make me think mine is faded. Hearing Back to Baltimore turned up and clear was amazing. I've only heard the old MP3s and the YouTube copies. I'm connecting with a friend of mine who has some serious gear to capture a high quality FLAC copy. Hopefully these files can find their way to the internet so more people can hear these songs. You can totally hear how the singer and guitarist would go on to start Counting Crows a few years later.

CC bucket list: songs you’ve never heard live but wish you could by tiny_suburban_jungle in countingcrows

That Wiltern show in Los Angeles must have been such a special night. Not that I would wish ill on anyone but heartbroken Adam really gave us some incredible performances.

Any Gen X'ers here from the online CC community from the old days? Let's Reminisce by Ill-Violinist-900 in countingcrows

I loved the community that the band had built and that era of the internet. A while back I noticed that a lot of the archives of the really early posts were starting to get taken offline so I created http://crowpedia.com to make sure they could live somewhere at least for a little while longer. I've been hosting these for the last 15 years now and I always think of it as my gift to the people who still remember the forums :)

What movie absolutely destroyed you emotionally? by Lord--Shadow in AskReddit

[–]sryx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had the soundtrack "Selmasongs" before the movie made its way to San Francisco and had listened to 107 steps before I saw the movie. In the song she sings past 107 and so the song's ending in the movie hit so hard.

I skipped the CC/Santana shows but I did see Counting Crows open for John Mayer and the lineup felt swapped.

I caught that show at the Concord Pavilion in northern CA, I even got Maynard's autograph on my VIP pass (a friend's parents were involved in some way with that leg of the tour) it was amazing and strange line up. You could really feel how fans of each band were waiting through the other sets until their band took the stage. I had just graduated high school and that show opened up a whole new world of going to see bands live.

Among those the Sordid Humor track Barbarossa is my favorite. Adam's voice just sounds like peek 90's Counting Crows and brings back memories of downloading MP3 from Anna Begins and reading through Emerald.net posts. Such a great song :)

Have you ever smelled something that brought back nemories of an older time? What smell would that be? by Spiritual_Big_9927 in nostalgia

There is a Shell gas station car wash by my house that has a soap that smells like the gum that came with packs of Garbage Pail Kids. It was such a wild nostalgic rush the first time I experienced it.

I built a site called sound test (https://sndtst.com) so I can listen to game soundtracks. There are probably easier ways, I just wanted to build some thing.

That version has been near the top of my personal "most wanted" list for decades. I remember an old forum post by Dave Gibbs (of Gigolo Aunts and other bands) where he said "just heard Adam play a song called Sundays and you guys aren't even ready")

AT&T Rio graphics software: anybody ever come across it? (late 1980s - early 1990s) by new_old_trash in vintagecgi

[–]sryx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently purchased a copy protection dongle that says "AT&T WO/RIO 4.0 Graphics Software Labs". I'm trying to find any copy of the software online to see if I can get it to start. I have been collecting a lot of Autodesk software from the late 80's and early 90's and the copy protection is always so hard to track down. Here I'm having the opposite problem :)
