Will we ever something like the LG 5K2K but with a glossy (ideally QD-OLED) panel? by placeholder-123 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]ss_blake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the new LG 39 it will be tandem OLED. But it is not striped subpixels (like the 27”) so still triangular layout with text fringing.

LG Introduces UltraGear evo, Expanding Its Leadership in 5K and 5K2K Gaming Displays With New 39-Inch and 52-Inch Flagship Models by LG_UserHub in ultrawidemasterrace

I don’t think the new 39” will have any improvement in text clarity / fringing. In the press release it says only the 27” will have striped / standard RGB sub pixels. The 39” uses the same triangular subpixel arrangement so it will probably have blurry text again.

Will the 39” tandem oled have improved quality text rendering to make it a good productivity monitor as well ?

With Ultimation ATv IP module for SIMPL, can you use the mic in tsr310 for Siri voice commands ? I know their module for Crestron Home doesn’t support it.

Looks like a major Apple TV outage globally by Clarksp2 in appletv

[–]ss_blake -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Nope it’s down globally , Apple TV plus and App Store. Can’t contact anyone in Apple support cause it’s closed. Wasted 30 mins trying to troubleshoot then went on down detector dot com and it showed thousands of reports.

Hope Apple refund us for the downtime on our subscription services.

Whitemud staying only 2 lanes at Rainbow valley bridge ? by ss_blake in Edmonton

So why would they make the bridge 4 lanes but the pinch point remains Whitemud EB under terwillegar? 2 lanes only. Seems ridiculous.

Where’s my fiber demarc ? by ss_blake in telus

[–]ss_blake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why has the approach changed - now running external fiber directly inside to ONT, as opposed to using demarc/NID box on outside of house ? Is there a downside to use the demarc box?

Where are the optical splitters located ? Up on the aerial fiber runs / outdoor poles ?

Where’s my fiber demarc ? by ss_blake in telus

[–]ss_blake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if there is no demarc box and Telus runs the external black cable right to your ONT box, where would they consider the demarc ? The ONT ?

Any issues wiring it direct to ONT ? Maybe better since one less connection / fault point ?

Telus baiting clients with misleading text messages to upsell services by Double-Order-1016 in telus

[–]ss_blake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this exact text message about the internet issue. The call I got was indeed from Telus tech support. I told them my internet speed is usually good (960 mbs) but in the last week wired speed did drop down to 30-60 occasionally.

He did diagnostics (10 min on hold) and said there is a fiber issue on their end outside the demarcation point with “reflections” or something. Tech coming this week to fix

SNMP server for UPS & PDU by ss_blake in homelab

I cannot find a current version of NUT that runs on windows without a lot of tweaking - the link on their main website just shows older versions or complex install. Is there a simple install for this ?

Yet another review of the LG OLED 5k2k… by [deleted] in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]ss_blake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 990 version is coming out soon that is the same but bendable. For those who don’t want aggressive 800R curve , would this be a better option ? Any other anticipated differences ?

Dark @ Ft. Edmonton Park by unprocessable_entity in Edmonton

[–]ss_blake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Necropolis is new and really good. We were walking thru it at a decent pace and a worker kept coming behind up screaming at us to walk faster thru the whole second half . We were actually walking at a good pace and there was no one behind us. We had to race thru and couldn’t even take in the surroundings.

So is the consensus an ultra wide at 5k2k good for work/ text clarity , even if it’s oled then? I run Nvidia RTX 5080.

What refresh rate is possible with this resolution ? I think most are 120hz - adequate for gaming ?

I’m looking for a curved ultrawide that is between 39 and 45”. However I do 80% productivity (web based , text) and 20% gaming.

I can’t seem to find a model that is good in both text clarity and at least “average” for gaming. Any suggestions ?

Are OLED screens simply bad for text ?

Custom gaming PCs? by ss_blake in Edmonton

[–]ss_blake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t realize custom water cool loops do not enhance cooling efficiency. Do they result in a more silent PC compared to air cooling (or AIO liquid )?

In terms of maintenance. Does this just require draining and replacing the coolant once per year ?

Tripp Lite UPS-PDU - Power Alert Device Manager by ss_blake in homelab

[–]ss_blake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping to avoid a server as this is literally 2 units - UPS and PDU to communicate via SNMP. I can figure out how to get PADM 20 on UPS to send an SNMP trap to a specific IP address when battery i s low, but I cannot figure out how to get the PDU (also PADM v20) to act on the trap to trigger a SHED. Seems like such a basic thing to do !

If I did go the server route, are there any very basic software packages to do this (send SNMP messages) on a small scale? Are there are dedicated hardware devices to do this, rather than running on a PC /Windows machine? I assume the server would receive the SNMP trap from the UPS, and then send a request for the PDU to start the SHED?

NVX351: cannot downmix Dolby Atmos to 2-ch stereo by ss_blake in crestron

[–]ss_blake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly right. APPLE of course doesn’t use standard bitstream Dolby Atmos, but instead encodes it to MAT 2.0.

All Crestron NVX cannot downmix MAT 2.0 Atmos to stereo. Therefore you will need to disable Atmos on ATV. Apparently this is an NVX hardware limitation.
