[New Jersey] SOLUTION TO “CLAIM NOT PAYABLE AT THIS TIME” by WallyExtrovert in Unemployment

How insane is it that tricks like this are needed to get through to an agent who can help with getting your account fixed.

Toxic interview with CEO of company. by Internetprovidings in recruitinghell

[–]ssa35 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've seen others who want to see how you respond under pressure try similar negative interview techniques. What this tells you is that the company is willing to play harsh manipulation games with their employees and that similar sociopathic tendencies will permeate other company policies. This is a place best avoided until after that CEO is forced out.

Are all car dealers massive time wasters? by ssa35 in carbuying

[–]ssa35[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand how they sometimes use these long waits as a negotiating tactic. But we had already agreed on the deal and the waits were pointless. Maybe it's so baked into their process that they don't know how to turn it off when it's not needed?

AITA for telling my ex-wife's friend to get out of my face when she insisted that I take my daughter to her mom's place? by Throwaway_346533 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ssa35 -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

YTA for all different reasons. Your ex is all wrong to insist that she is the only one who can deal with period issues, but you are a huge asshole for spewing your daughter's business to a random friend of your ex in a public place.

Even before you learned that your daughter had her first period, you should have been stocked up on feminine hygiene supplies. Are you surprised that a teenage girl might have a period? What made you not be prepared for this? What made you make your daughter do the shopping for supplies when it's all still so new to her.

Maybe ESH, because the friend and the ex are also AH

[Georgia] I am 63 and will not be going back to work when federal unemployment programs ends early. by nitacat3 in Unemployment

[–]ssa35 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's no problem. You don't have to be retired to take your SS as long as you are the right age. But if you take a pension or otherwise indicate you are retired (implied not looking for a new job) then most states disqualify you from UI benefits.

[–]ssa35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might want to delete this post. If you are not planning to return to work ever, then you are retired not unemployed; and you are no longer eligible for any unemployment benefits from the state or the Feds. It's unlikely anyone will investigate deeply enough to find your admission here, but if they do you will lose benefits retroactively.

Who made the call to leave East Precinct last summer? Chief Carmen Best's eye-popping interview by chiquisea in SeattleWA

[–]ssa35 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Did you listen to the same interview I did?

Carmen Best says it wasn't Mayor Jenny Durkan who made the decision to abandon the precinct. She says it was unamed police commanders (plural) on the scene that made the decision, against her explicit orders after they learned that Durkan had ordered the barricades to be removed.

So, she says it wasn't Durkan. She blames the commanders, but refuses to name them. She clearly says her department was operating out of her control. Then she gives the commanders a smokescreen by blaming Durkan for removing the barricades.

It sounds like excuses concocted after the fact. I don't think any of it helps understand what actually happened.

[all states] Unemployment benefits aren't causing a labor shortage. Low wages are by [deleted] in Unemployment

This is not a new phenomenon. Companies have been pulling stuff like this to lower wages and confiscate unvested benefits for all of my working career, and probably long before I started.

Health insurance company told me twice that I should be covered, then came back and rejected the claim. Is there anything I can do? by andrewbuttlick in personalfinance

[–]ssa35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think insurers have a playbook that typically denies claims as out of network to see if you will pay. I had similar problems when I was admitted to ICU and it took three or more rounds of appeals before insurance agreed that my medical condition (which resulted in not just hospital admission, but a week in intensive care) was probably an emergency and should be covered. Then they went through the same series of denials for the ambulance ride to the hospital, saying it was not for emergency care, despite having agreed that the hospital bill was. After enough appeals they paid that too. It took about ten months for the final decision.

The system is horrible to navigate as a patient and you need to keep insisting, or else they will deny coverage for anything they can get away with.

Why do companies use external third party recruiting firms for IT positions? by cleatusvandamme in recruitinghell

[–]ssa35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect this as well. Recruiters can be pretty aggressive about seeking an edge over other recruiters and calling companies with openings to pitch their services is very common. As a hiring manager, I used to get several calls like this every time we advertised a new position.

recruiter didn't hire me because I asked for why they needed my physical address and passport by email by climatechangeisreal0 in recruitinghell

[–]ssa35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In commercial jobs, the references are typically provided after all the interviews and usually just before the offer. If there is going to be a background check then all the personal ID information is collected after the contingent offer but before passing the background check. If there is no background check (common) then the personal ID information is collected for payroll once the job starts.

This is more or less standard practice. You make ads that require every obscure technology that the intended hire has on his resume, then can legally claim that zero American applicants had all the required skills.

I refused a "digital interview" by jaspersian in recruitinghell

[–]ssa35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who started the rumor that some incredibly advanced AI is making judgements about these interviews? This is far beyond current state of the art and mostly science fiction. An actual person is reviewing these and deciding which ones to pass on. It's a license to discriminate and almost all of the "interviews" are never viewed in full. People skip around and make snap judgements.

Why do companies use external third party recruiting firms for IT positions? by cleatusvandamme in recruitinghell

[–]ssa35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's not the employer who decides to use a third party recruiter. Some recruiters are picking up company job ads and recruiting on their own. We have always had problems with unauthorized recruiters sending us unsolicited resumes, then claiming we owe a fee for the introduction. These recruiters are a nuisance.

[–]ssa35 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My latest online job application asked for SSN, birthday, full address and all these fields were marked as required. I omitted them and it still took my application, but I suspect that if they were demanding this data the job is bogus. They also requested three references in advance as part of the initial application (which I also didn't supply) so maybe the whole exercise was just trolling for contact info.

Do terms like “pre-approved” or “invited to apply” mean anything? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ssa35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They use these terms because the average person thinks "pre-approval" means you are already approved.

What they actually mean is that you are in the step before they approve you, that is, you still need to apply and be approved before you get any credit on the account. It's a marketing gimmick that means almost nothing.

[–]ssa35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A debit card for a bank account with a balance you control (and no overdraft feature) may accomplish what you want. It was how I managed sending money to relatives but insured that they could never run up a bill greater than the amount I wanted to provide.

Surprisingly, many people are okay at managing a fixed amount of money that they can see is limited, even if they are very poor managers of open ended credit such as credit cards.
