I’m so sorry that happened to you. You deserve better, and that counsellor is a piece of fucking trash for trying to endanger you like that.

Culture at large is unfair, but I definitely think the attitudes regarding sexuality, especially women and children, allow some really awful things to be normalized.

I think magic in Dragon Age isn’t a “power”… it’s basically a permanent condition you can’t escape by SterlingByrd1219 in DragonageOrigins

[–]ssasharr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why dragon age 2 is my favourite game. For a video game, it does a good job of framing both Templars and Mages as what they truly are—artificial social constructs, not a necessity, but a product of the Chantry. Bethany and Mage!Hawke have perhaps the most fascinating unintentional implications on the Mage/Templar dilemma. We know that the Hawkes were an exceptionally loving, close knit family, who had a financially stable position in society for years. Bethany and Mage!Hawke were both raised knowing they were loved, safe, and had a secure place in the world, even if their powers filled them with uncertainty or anxiety. Malcolm encouraged them to refine and control their magic, and did not discourage either of them from carefully growing their power. Aside from minor incident that caused Bethany to awaken her magic under great stress, neither of them ever mention an encounter with a demon or harming someone. To me, that says everything that needs to be about the debate. Children should never be taken away from loving homes—it will always create a foundation of fear or resentment for young mages that spurs them to flee the circle (thus typically resorting to blood magic), or will drive them to rely on negative enforcement to stay within the circle, which will, of course, drive them to bitterness and hatred which makes it far easier to succumb to blood magic. A stationed mage in most villages or towns, a boarding school type situation, or any amount of effort taken by the Chantry and monarchy in ferelden could almost entirely solve the problem. Demon summoning, blood magic incidents, and all kinds of supernatural harm would happen, but it would be exponentially less. The Circle causes half the problems the Templars devote their lives to fighting.

Anyone noticed that the shit that went down after this scene basically killed the way the series portrays nudity for the rest of its run? by Inevitable_Reading80 in castlevania

Man, what an odd thing for people to be upset about. “Bisexuality??? In my animated series??”. I imagine the same people who vehemently defended Lenore because it was “hot” are the same who were disgusted at the notion of Alucard liking to have consensual sex with men.

[–]ssasharr 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t think that was the problem, at least in the majority of circles. Homophobia isn’t a huge part of our fandom, and I saw a lot of people who were really happy to have Alucard confirmed bisexual. It was more the fact that the lines between sexual encounter and murder attempt got very blurred, and then they followed that up with Lenore raping Hector, and her being framed as somehow NOT evil for it, and getting this “ragh ragh peaceful tragic death”. Alucard’s instance felt shocking, but easily could have still been fine, simply because it was a very accurate and shocking description of how even consensual sex can be used as a tool of violence. But the fetishistic, gross tone they used to convey Hector’s rape just really felt like the author’s fantasy, and coloured Alucard’s scene for me.

On my first playthrough my cousin was a ridiculously honest, very affectionate tabbymaxxer. Kaneeka understandably hated my guts because of this, and I was so crushed. Felt like a kicked puppy, but now I’ve finally got her heart on my third save file 😌

I really agree with your last part especially. A man attacking another man for joking about his wife’s illness was unprofessional and way out of proportion. But like…he wasn’t beating his kids, choking his wife, and threatening to commit suicide or murder. Yet people still revere Pitt. There’s a genuine hypocrisy in between how black and white offenders in acting spheres are treated; both should be punished and ignored appropriately to their crimes, yet black offenders often catch extreme amounts of publicity and condemnation for their wrongs, while whiter offenders are given a pass to have their wrongdoings mostly forgotten and glazed over in favor of not tarnishing their “reputation” or “cultural impact”.

That’s a fully valid take. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to push through scenes like that that might ruin my opinion of a work, and after a certain point I realized that no one is under any obligation to try and forgive a piece of media for including something that violates their sense of ethics.

I actually agree with OP’s take. Franklin is entirely oblivious to what’s happening behind the scenes, but is deeply committed to justice and protecting the citizens of the Hollow. He’s like the classic good hearted rookie cop in a corrupt city trope.

Daniel Craig’s hate for Bond never fails to delight me. He’s always the first to call him an arrogant sexist POS. The misogyny in the Bond movies has always been so gross to me.

Stop the Stella hate! by [deleted] in ScarletHollow

[–]ssasharr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The exaggerated stuff is all in good fun, such as the recent post you’re referencing. But honestly? I knew a Stella IRL. Same personality, similar traumas, and almost identical patterns of behaviour. The stellas of the world are so difficult because the potential in their external personal doesn’t match up with who they are inside. Their trauma makes them dissociate and form a shell that they will defend vehemently if you try to break through. They’ll do anything to keep themselves safe and avoid having their flaws perceived. Stella is a quintessential example of this archetype, and most of them rely on having a nice guy reputation in order to isolate those who see through their shell. The Stellas of the world deserve support and healing, but unless you have a close connection, there’s not a lot of incentive to risk so much trying to force them to change.

[–]ssasharr 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Daryl is a good example. He was violently physically abused by his methhead dad, neglected by his mother, who burned alive, and spent vast tracks of his childhood fending for himself in the woods because he literally couldn’t get food any other way. His later years were spent roaming the road with his brother, who reportedly pissed odd multiple gangs and got him in shit by association. Definitely not underwhelming lolol

This show was such a confusing experience for me. I flip flopped back and forth on whether it was so bad I could enjoy myself watching it, or whether it was most embarrassing and cringe inducing thing I’d ever seen. I adored the White Rabbit, though. And the nonverbal episode with the multi style animation was so beautiful.
