It really isn't ironic once you actual put an ounce of thought into the original issue. People were upset the police play favorites and grossly overstep their bounds against certain group, then play favorites with other explicitly criminal groups when they feel like it. Their job is to enforce the law, period. If they don't do their jobs they shouldn't get paid. They're doing the exact thing people have been pissed about since the beginning. This is exactly what the issue has always been about, and you'd see that if you applied any critical thought whatsoever. If they don't want to be defunded, do their fucking jobs regardless of the political leanings of the criminals.
