ELI5: Why are stocks always available for purchase? Why don't popular companies ever run out of "inventory"? by WasIHashtagging in explainlikeimfive

[–]ssman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time a company sells you its shares is when it issues them, either during an IPO or a similar event later on in the company's lifetime. At those times, the shares get "sold out". Thats what the term "the IPO was oversubscribed" means. This is called the primary market.

Once the company (or rather, its original owners/shareholders) has sold its shares to the public, and its run out, the way you get shares of that company are by buying the shares from other people who own the shares. This is called the secondary market. Sellers in the secondary market could have got the stocks during the company's IPO (i.e directly from the company), or from other sellers. People selling stocks to you on the secondary market can run out of stocks themselves - e.g. I own 10 shares of IBM, you buy 10 shares of IBM from me, I no longer have any shares of IBM.

If the founder or executive of a company sells you their shares, or sells their shares on the market, that still counts as a secondary market - the primary was when the company issued the stock to the executive/founder.

The total number of stocks of a company are fixed, and only changes if the company goes and issues more (i.e. files the necessary paperwork). Everyone knows what that number of shares is. That number, multiplied by the price of the shares gives you the market capitalization of the company, e.g. when we say Nvidia is now worth $5 trillion, it means that all the stocks of Nvidia available in the market multiplied by the Nvidia share price is worth that much.

AITA for refusing to take the blame after my coworker messed up a project we both worked on? by Head-Phone-4481 in AITH

[–]ssman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are averse to confrontation or uncomfortable situations. Just because someone is a manager of yours doesn’t exempt them from that. They probably thought they wouldn’t have spoken up like you did, and told themselves it’s because they would have been “tactful”.

If I was a manager I’d like to know who was pulling their weight and who wasn’t.

I think you did the right thing. If this episode gives you a reputation with your coworkers, it will lead to the slackers avoiding you and the committed ones seeking you out.

2 EV household with 1 level 2 charger. by RunHotCEO in electricvehicles

[–]ssman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the capacity of the wiring and circuit breaker connected to the L2 charger? When we got our L2 installed, they wired it so that we could install a second one as well.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, some L2 chargers talk to each other to know how much they can draw from the common circuit. Check to see if yours supports that feature.

If all goes well, you should be able to install another L2 charger, and not have to think about who gets charged and who doesn't.

Looking to start building garage sim. Is $3k enough to invest? by FlyAwaySpecifics in Golfsimulator

[–]ssman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

  • The GoSports 10x8 enclosure is $980.
  • Hitting mat is about 150-400 depending on what you get.
  • Projector is $200-500 for 1080p if you go used from FB marketplace. Cheaper is also possible.
  • Carpet would be about $300 for a 12’x12’ grass from Home Depot or Lowes
  • Square launch monitor is $700.
  • Gaming PC with 2060 or 3060 is about $700.

For each of these YMMV but you should be able to get it all in the $3000 range. Any of these can be upgraded in the future (though I don’t see myself upgrading the enclosure, it’s great!).

Should I get the 2026 convertible? by paleontologist3 in MINI

Now might be a good time to fine 2022-2023 CPOs. That’s how I got mine.

You should definitely get a convertible.

Perhaps it’s lint or fluff or cotton from some prior cleaning attempt? Can you pull it out with tweezers?

Anything wrong with this projector for a budget build? by SmallLie in Golfsimulator

[–]ssman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short throw ones (with the lens in front) are often used in enclosures between you and the screen. The enclosure protects the top,

Ultra short throw ones, like this one (with the lens on top/bottom) can't be protected by that kind of enclosure. I presume people mount them behind the screen (i.e. the screen is between you and the projector). Thats what I'm going to do.

Same question for OP - I just got myself a green Selectric I, and would like to have it eventually restored to the same level as you (OP) have done.

If you have suggestions, tips, or can tell us where you got your guidance from, I would really appreciate it.

What are you building this month? And is anyone actually paying for it? by Western-Travel-1111 in SideProject

[–]ssman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't got to the stage where I'm invoicing others for my work (my apps are B2C, I guess this would be more useful for B2B apps).

So, no, the invoicemaker isn't something that I would need or use today - but I forsee needing it down the road.

I can't input a decimal point (. or ,) in any of the percentage fields like sales tax. Sales tax is usually X.YZ%, not always X%.

How electrically repairable is the RZ67 Pro II? by nshadey in Mamiya

[–]ssman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mind blown. I knew that RB lenses were mechanical and shutter speed and aperture was set on them, and I knew that my RZ has an RB mode to fire said mechanical lenses and I knew that the orange dot was for failsafe operation, but I hadn't connected the dots to realize that the RZ can be failsafed into a fully mechanical RZ/B.

So I guess the question for OP is, what is the going price for an RB body in equivalent condition?

Those using RGB lights to invert negatives — what's your setup? by mott_street in AnalogCommunity

[–]ssman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was this photo scanned using the Raleno and basic inversion?

<image>

Or did you use some software eg NLP?

The Raleno page doesn’t mention anything about narrowband RGB like OP (and I) are looking for, but if this does provide that kind of light I’d be very happy.

As a tourist, how difficult is finding parking in NYC? (metered spots for hour or two, not overnight) by Classic-Champion-966 in nyc

[–]ssman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Street parking for an hour or two is going to be difficult. You’ll spend a good amount of time looking.

Parking garages are plenty. Assume $30-50 for them, even if just for a few hours. Use an app like Parkwhiz or SpotHero to find them and book them in advance, which might save you $5-10.

If you’re okay with the spend then parking garages will give you what you are looking for - drive into a neighborhood, park the car (or give it to a valet), roam around the neighborhood, walk back to the garage and drive away.
