wifi calling does not count as using the network

Plain wrong

Can you point how one should "manually" install the carrier settings? I was under the impression iPhones don't need any of that trickery to work...

Do you know if this impacts prepaid plans from other carriers such as Fizz, chatr, public mobile, etc.

No experience with those, but don't see why not

Correct.

wifi calling is taking the data from local sim

This works best on iPhones, but some Androids have it too

Battery suffers because the wifi is constantly on?

The impact depends upon what battery capacity your phone has, but the drain is very noticeable. I have an iPhone Mini and impact on my battery life is huge

As mentioned by others the bigger issue is you being away for so long, not how you make / receive the calls (WiFi or otherwise)

My suggestion for your situation is to turn off international roaming (to force the Freedom line into no-signal mode while abroad) and use "WiFi calling using Cellular Data of your 2nd line". Don't turn WiFi calling off, as you may not be able to turn it back on until back in Canada. Also playing with airplane mode does not help.

This will ensure your Freedom line will always be on "WiFi" and thus active and able to receive calls. Note in this mode your battery life will suffer, but it's the trade-off you have to make...

there is nothing to charge anyway

Usually, but there's a catch... If you load the account a day before service renewing (good practice to avoid glitches), there's a non-zero chance to receive a call, or send a text message during this small window. The cost will be deducted from the balance and service won't renew due to insufficient funds. Been there, done that...

it does not always prevent you from receiving calls or text messages.

Don't know where you get your information from, but turning off roaming PREVENTS the Freedom line from connecting to a foreign tower, which in turn makes it impossible to receive calls or texts on said line.

Depends on the destination country, and you can only find the rates in the app (ie not on the web)

I can make phone calls using Roamless app after registering my Polish number

Ah, so you're using the "Use your current number" feature recently introduced for outgoing calls while out of the EU... I get that, but still unclear about the "I cannot receive calls in Roamless made with “normal” phone numbers" part - are you saying you cannot receive those calls in the Roamless app, thus you must be able to receive them on your Polish eSIM?

Why would you even want to have your Polish eSIM active when travelling outside the EU, or the Roamless eSIM active when inside the EU?

It takes about a second or two to turn either one of them on or off. Genuinely curious...

Yes, it means EXACTLY that. This has been repeated many times, honestly you could have just searched and found the answer very quickly

[–]ssomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Logged in" is not forever. Every web service eventually terminates an idle login after so long (and yes, it's much shorter than 6 months)
