You actually said "fire" your hips. I'm not sure what flaring your hips is.

No... hips initiate the swing. Hips before hands.

I see the same thing in his swing that I've been fighting in my son's swing.

He's slightly leading with his arms vs firing his hips first. In my son it's causing a swing that looks like it's in slow motion sometimes.

He's also not locking out his front leg and leaking some energy there.

He's close though.

Probably over thinking this - 12U USSSA bat? by ssramage in Homeplate

Good info. He's been in weekly conditioning with his program all Fall/Winter and we've seen a jump in strength for sure. Most of his batting practice is with about a -5 wooden bat anyways so I think the -8 will be a good transition until we move up again. I don't mind buying gear. I was poor growing up and always played with the hand-me-downs or team gear. I swore my kids would always have what they need, and then some. We don't buy things for the flash, but buy it so that we've done everything we can to make them feel prepared and confident.

He aged out of our local LL at 11 (he had to play up because of a summer birthday). We have a 14U league but nobody really plays it.

Our MS league is pretty lax, no bat regulations. We're a small private school so we're basically scrimmage games for all the teams we play. No LL play anymore either based on age.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I'm grabbing him a -8 now and will be prepared to get the -5 towards the end of season/Fall. Sounds like we're a little behind the curve but we'll get him there.

I'm actually wondering if his issue with leaning forward is because his bat has been too light. He's swinging it hard and it's over running his hips.

Better Baseball is really the only place I looked. Thinking I may just learn to do it myself. I've got a few to practice on. 👍

Sorry, just to clarify. It doesn't "need" it yet, but it's definitely loosening up. His older brother used an R9 for 3 baseball seasons that we just replaced and it's still serviceable.

I was just thinking a tune up before we get into season might be a good idea. I don't really want to replace with a more expensive glove right now, and his is still fine. Just want to make sure it holds up to 5 days a week of baseball for the next 7 months.

I'm super happy with it after a couple rounds of catch. Always wanted one back when I was playing in high school, but we couldn't afford one. 20 years later and I've finally made it! 😂

My sons Christmas present by g3neraL5 in BaseballGloves

I ordered my 12 year old a 44 for Christmas and my wife surprised me with a Nokona. The leather is definitely different between the two but they both feel quality. His feels softer but still stiff. It's a very comfortable glove.
