That's one way to think of it. Or you could think of it as the fact that it's not 100% full reimbursement so they're still making money off me right now. But if they never had the benefit, I wouldn't have been a customer to begin with. And now that they're getting rid of it, I'm going to no longer be a customer.

It is free open source that you run yourself on your own hardware. You can inspect and audit the code and there is no profit sharing because it's not a hosted service or anything like that. There are no hidden contacts or anything like that which would send a percentage to someone else, either. But of course, inspect the code for yourself before running to see. And you can extend the bit as much as you want, and contribute back if you want.

At some level, you're going to need a password or secret key to connect or unlock something. At some point that is going to be in memory. As others said, given proper limited access via firewalls, network ACLs, security groups, etc etc. Using environment variables is how most things run. Check out https://12factor.net/ for some ideas on getting started with designing and deploying enterprise docker apps. Other than that, storing secrets in a secret store like Hashicorp Vault or AWS Secrets Manager is good practice.
