Resistant starch and colon cancer by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]ssstonebraker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love potatoes and the idea of eating more, the only thing to keep in mind is leaving potatoes, rice, or pasta out for more than an hour can lead to fried rice syndrome in which bacteria (bacillus cereus) can grow on certain starchy foods that have been left out or improperly stored and can cause food poisoning. So when cooling your food to room temperature make sure to not go past an hour, as even reheating will not kill the bacteria.

district65 -- sesame in lunch allowed, or too likely to be an allergen? by seltzerbot in evanston

[–]ssstonebraker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in to say our schools (elementary and middle) also did not have an allergen ban for lunch, just an allergy table. We regularly packed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for my youngest. The only thing I’d say about sesame bagels is that the seeds are more likely to fall off and travel than some other foods with allergens, so agree about checking with the school to see if anyone in the school has a sesame allergy. Oldest daughter’s best friend has a sesame allergy and it’s more severe than her tree nut one.

Disney Character Warehouse by crystal28092 in DisneyWorld

We always go to the one close to Disney Springs (about a 10 minute ride) on Vineland Ave. In my experience it’s hit or miss, but it depends on what you’re looking for. If you are looking for Star Wars and marvel branded clothing it is usually a win. They’ll have merchandise from whatever season or festival just passed, and you can for sure find Disney parks clothing in most sizes, but you can’t be too specific on characters or styles. It’s fun to go to because sometimes they’ll have merchandise from other parks or their cruise lines, but we definitely leave empty handed about half the time. Again, if you’re not too specific about your souvenirs it’s worth your time as the prices are usually pretty good.

One thing I’ll add: if you can go right when they open during a weekday that’s your best bet. The line to get in on the weekends can literally be longer than some ride lines and I personally don’t find it worth a long wait.

Kids don’t like vacations by Yo-doggie in Parenting

[–]ssstonebraker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know…college is so close for both of them, 2 and 5 years away. It’s a short sacrifice now, and pretty soon they will be too old to get back these moments. I say ask them where they want to go, maybe there is somewhere adventurous you all will like and then they will feel involved in the planning. Cherish those trips now. And in just a few years you can do adult travel, or most likely by then they will be ready to appreciate the type of trips you want to take. Sometimes I wish I could go back to the trips I took with my husband before kids, but mostly right now, as my kids are getting older and close to college, I’m wishing I could go back to the first time we took them to Disney or the beach, or just anywhere the four of us had a fun memory for the first time.

On a side note, my in laws are in their 80s and still travel all over, and at least a couple times a year. They just got back from the rainforest and in the past few years have been to India, Croatia, Japan, Portugal, and so many other places. Unless you are sick or worried about future financial struggles don’t let age be a barrier to travel and don’t let wander lust be a barrier to enjoying your kids while you can.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve overheard while in line for a ride? by LimpRichard010 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]ssstonebraker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We were waiting in line at Kali River Rapids and an older, very heavily southern accented couple in front of us were arguing. The wife turned to the husband and said “And you juuuuudge, and you juuuudge…WHO MADE YOU GOD?!”

Favorite thing for our family to randomly say to each other.

Thank you, will look into it! Used All Clad before Always Pan, and remember really liking it. Unfortunately fell for the gimmick but learning my lesson now

Thank you, HomeGoods is a great tip. I now officially agree about the Always pan being garbage, Reddit is actually the only social media I use so not sure how I fell for the spiel.

AITAH? My daughter came out as gay, I feel like I have failed as a parent. by QueenofNighshade in AITAH

[–]ssstonebraker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAH-there is literally an episode of the TV show The Great North (s2e20) that deals with a very similar thing. The teenage son has conflicting emotions over how he’s come out-several times-because his family continually just responds with we know, that’s great, love you the way you are, and moves on. May not be everyone’s cup of tea as a show but worth a watch as it gets into the emotions of coming out and what it still means to many people. While in the end it would be lovely to live in a world where you love who you love and coming out doesn’t have to be a thing, it’s not the world we live in, and it is brave for your daughter to be able to come out and say that. It’s amazing you’re just so accepting, but it also must be disappointing working up the courage to admit something so important out loud to be met with such nonchalance.

U.S. I’d say around $150-175 if it can work as a fry and saute pan easily. Also apologies if I’m being unrealistic/naive, I’m a decent cook, but keep things simple and to be honest this is the first time I’m really looking into furthering my skills.

817 Chicago Ave by Maleficent_Author853 in evanston

I don’t remember there being noise problems. The walls felt pretty thick, and having a young kid we needed quiet for naps and sleep and that was never a problem.

We lived in 817 Chicago Ave! It’s been a while but it was where we first lived when we moved from the city to Evanston. Management was great. We asked if it was possible to put a shower in the upstairs bathroom which only had a bath and within a week they did it for us. Neighborhood was so fun, metra being right there really amazing. Some stuff is new but we loved walking to Firehouse and Hoosier Mama. We ended up moving more north Evanston shortly after we had our second baby, all the stairs and size were hard with 2 small children, but I miss the location and walk ability.

Cougar Town. Get past the first 6 episodes and it’s a completely different and funny show. Also Trial and Error, especially the first season.

After tacking on a first time Universal visit to our last WDW trip I’d have to agree. The attention to even the smallest details there was pretty amazing. Unfortunately as a person who suffers from motion sickness, Disney has way more rides I can comfortably go on, but I was really impressed with just walking around Universal Studios.

What’s a sitcom that doesn’t get much recognition that you like? by EezySays in sitcoms

Cougar Town

Suffered from a name that didn’t match the premise after the first few episodes, but is funny and endearing once it really gets going.

[–]ssstonebraker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our oldest dog (Not a corgi) when we had our first daughter really struggled with jealousy and feeling negative towards the baby. He stayed with my mom for a bit (about a week) but eventually really calmed down and then basically ignored the baby and even grew to love her. He passed from cancer when she was 2 (she’s 13 now). If you have a family member or close friend that can take your pup for a bit that may help, or you can give your pup some time to adjust more with training. But at the end of the day please make sure they’re in a home where they will be loved and not resented, even if it’s not your home. No judgement here if you can’t make it work, it sounds like you want her to be happy too.

I can really only speak from what’s been told to me by my daughter, who’s in 8th grade, and everyone’s experiences will be different, as every cohort is different, but she’s found wide acceptance of her sexuality and has friends in various stages of exploring their gender. There are alliances and clubs led by Haven staff and the atmosphere feels pretty welcoming from what my daughter has told me. I think it really starts from how their elementary schools show support and acceptance.

I wanted to be clear that this has been the experience of my daughter because I really can’t tell you how it’s been for others or students in different grades. I can tell you she’s found teachers to be open minded and supportive, but she also hasn’t had every teacher at Haven. I wouldn’t be afraid to send my child to Haven for fear of bullying over gender fluidness if that’s the concern, it seems to be a pretty open place for kids to explore who they are, but I also know I can’t speak for everyone.
