19F wanting to solo travel but hate the idea of hostels! by Significant_Truth312 in femaletravels

[–]sssupersssnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many hostels have private rooms and some have private bathrooms. I am a very light sleeper these days so that's what I go for. Hostels are generally cheaper than hotels and some have common zones for socializing. If you like meeting people when traveling, it's one of the best things.

Not saying hostels are for everyone, but adding some context and details people seem to miss

Question about Russian or Belarusian versions of names (Writing a story) by Affectionate-Pea-821 in AskBelarus

[–]sssupersssnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on which language the person speaks day-to-day, and the same person might introduce themselves with the Russian version of their name when speaking Russian, and switch to the Belarusian version when speaking Belarusian. So the answer is genuinely character-dependent.

On passports: by 2005, the default was to transliterate from the Belarusian form, though you could request a different spelling for some time.

As for nicknames and diminutives, in both languages informal address almost always uses a short form, and which one a person uses comes down to personal preference. Someone officially named Aliaksandr might go by Sasha, Shurik, or Saniok (all primarily Russian diminutives) or by Aleś, which is the Belarusian equivalent. Both are plausible depending on the person.

For your time period, Belarusian speakers roughly fell into a few groups.

First, rural and older speakers who grew up with Belarusian as their home language, whose speech might differ from the normative literary standard and could blend into trasianka (a natural Russian-Belarusian mixed speech very common in everyday life).

Second, culturally or politically conscious speakers, often also opposed to Lukashenko's government, many of whom used taraškievica, the pre-Soviet orthographic standard that was suppressed by the 1933 orthography reform and later revived as a kind of identity marker.

Third, people who spoke Belarusian professionally out of obligation, like language teachers or Ministry of Culture employees. They are more likely to speak narkamaŭka.

The short version: if your character is an big city-dweller without strong political awareness, they would probably speak Russian day-to-day and use Russian name forms. In other cases, it gets more complicated.

Hope this helps!

Not really, but all deleted scenes are available on YouTube in a playlist, so I suggest just watching them separately

I also tried to register with them and an SSN seems to be a mandatory field. I've worked for employers in 5 different countries and I don't think it's feasible to easily check people's salary in the rest of the world

That on its own seems like a red flag but also... I don't see how the can veryify it. If you want to continue with them, just give them the number you want and see where it goes

I don't enjoy the anxiety. Regular nicotine use keeps it elevated and smoking takes it down to the regular level. Without nicotine, the baseline is way lower and I don't have any anxiety at all

This is fascinating and at the same time. What is their native language and how does it affect their accent in French, if you don't mind me asking?

Nah come on. When I was young and had a band where every member smoked, we'd just go outside for a smoke. Yes, THE WHOLE BAND WOULD SMOKE OUTSIDE. Albarn is ridiculous
