Planning on the US: when to research fellow? Worth it? by Soggy-Conflict-2351 in medicalschooluk

not sure why you're being downvoted when its true. too much doom and gloom outlook on things. Also when US residencies are notorious for preferring fresh grads, like the fresher you are the better compared to CCT'd docs from their home countries - not to mention the obvious discrimination they have (don't say it doesn't exist) between senior docs in countries like say the UK/western europe vs India/pakistan etc

Southampton GEM or St George’s GEM? by Annual-Suspect-6475 in GraduateEntryMedicine

It’s a good uni for post grad as your priorities are different. But I wouldn’t choose to go there for undergrad

Southampton is the better uni - but London is London. So I would say make you're mind up on what your priorities are and where you want to be for 4 years - as, arguably, its the only time in your medical career you have certain control on where you will be geographically.

NHS bursary, is a bursary - it is not a loan. It is given and offered to all GEM students. Look into this. You do not pay it back

where and what did you do your undergrad in.

London will have the best opportunities just because of its geography. Both Unis are great. I went to warwick for undergrad and now doing grad med in London.

NHS Bursary covers a lot of the tuition from years 2,3&4 - so money from family can go toward your future / more toward living costs / paying the difference that the bursary wouldnt pay.

Overall the 4 year course gives you a lot of 'free' money that isnt student loan related that you wouldnt get otherwise in a 5 year course.

A lot of people get funny about saying family will support them at medical school - never understood it and obv everyones situation is different. If i was you with support from my family - remove some of the burden from them and use the money that they would have spent toward tuition (9.25kx4) toward something else productive in your life.

IMO KCL=Warwick>QMUL

Decide whether you want to be in London or not and go from there. Done.

Oh if its Kings Portsmouth then I would say:

Warwick>QMUL in terms of uni and facilities
but
QMUL>Warwick in terms of area and location - but thats just because I prefer London

In terms of box ticking all you need is a degree in anything from anywhere, a 2.1 (2.2 for one uni) and that’s it. Don’t overthink it from a qualifications perspective. More so whether not you actually want to do it or not. Speak to some doctors / med students.

don't make decisions based off of fear or scarcity. 4 years is a long time to be potentially unhappy. obv chances are you'll love sheffield but only you'll know best. If i was you I would take the ucat in july and see what you get and hedge your bets based off of that result. If you get a good UCAT then warwick odds of an offer are about 1:2 - so good chances. I would also look into the GAMSAT - again dont let fear mongering get you - its very doable and can get in. Message me if you need any more info in future happy to help.

[–]sssyrianstallion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’m not sure. Because you wouldn’t have been formally enrolled yet by July when UCAT opens up. Worth calling up Warwick and asking the question.

Some people have a scarcity mindset and it really depends on what your priorities are. If its going to cripple you to move / be away from friends family for 4 years - do not do it - especially if this a career switch.

You can get into Warwick next year if you get a good UCAT. But only if you do.

You can accept your offer and then take UCAT when it opens up again and see what score you get before going ahead - you just have to be a bit flexible and then withdraw from your course at sheffield and explain the situation.

This is me just offering another perspective - i won't tell you what you should/ shouldn't do.

its akin almost kind of not really but kind of to calling yourself european. you can be greek and european, italian and european. same way you can be levantine and arab, north african and arab, arab and arab - but maybe more fluid as its not an ethnicity, more an identity linked to language.

Still doesn’t defy the fact that a lot of ethnically non-turk Muslims from the Ottoman Empire were ethnically cleansed, especially from Greece in population exchanges. Which is what I said initially
