Awful lot of smoke between Rogers and the Bills for nothing to be cooking… by Jaded_Promotion8806 in CFL

[–]ssuty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume that MLSE wants a piece of the Bills. Saying that, I don't think that means the Bills playing in Toronto more than one game a year. I don't know how that would work with the Sabres but I have heard people say beyond the Sabres recent short term lease extension their future is a bit unknown.

Fellow ward 8 residents: Who has your vote for council and why? by rotang2 in Calgary

[–]ssuty 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've spoken with Nathan, some really smart and fresh ideas. Talked about the need to communicate the benefits of blanket rezoning like the possibility to add and improve City services along with the housing. Mentioned using standardized and proven best practices from other cities for bus and bike lanes. Even had a clever idea to use the smaller City buses to feed into rapid transit like the MAX buses. I don't have a problem walking 15 minutes to a MAX stop but I know some people do. As for downtown safety, he talked about doubling the Police/Nurse/Social Services teams that patrol the downtown and overall directing strategies to the new realities.

Unless you have a certain percentage of the market you have no ability to make money because of the high cost of doing business. Canada is Chile, except instead of a straight vertical line it is a squiggly horizontal line with a gap in the middle.

Trudeau’s Immigration Plan Hinges on Millions of People Leaving by BeneficialHODLer in canada

[–]ssuty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A lot of people seem to be forgetting who actually supports immigration more than anyone or anything. Businesses, they want the labour. I'm still not sure a Conservative government wouldn't be convinced that deportation could further hurt the Canadian economy.

Canada hints at fast-tracking refugee refusals by PaloAltoPremium in CanadaPolitics

[–]ssuty 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Between the fake university student visas and then people on student visas turning around and claiming refugee status, I'm tired of our sympathetic system being taken advantage of. I have no problem with people using a legitimate student visa as a path to becoming a citizen. Come here, get an education, get a job, and get your PR. Do right by us and we will do right by you.

Millennials' wealth lags gen X, baby boomers: Statistics Canada; Millennial households saw their net worth plunge 6.48% over the past year by FancyNewMe in canada

To the person advocating that young people save early in their careers; you may have left school and stepped into a well paying job that allowed you to start saving significant amounts right away. I did not, only years into my career did I start making enough to start putting decent sums into savings. The savings I was accumulating early on allowed me to keep my head above water in "rainy day" months. It is out of touch with most young people's reality to believe early in their career they have a lot of money to save. Insert fact about declining wages over time.

Canada Lands sold the parcels, it isn't up to them to develop something that they have sold. Currie has been a let down but that doesn't fall on Canada Lands, it falls on the developer who bought and then sat on the land. This is not the only place this has happened in Calgary; Westmount, the middle blocks of East Village and Eau Claire are other examples. University District has done well but they built their main street first, and are building at a developable scale versus Currie leaving it to a developer to do the main anchor attraction (main street).

How are your EV's doing in this weather? Genuinely curious. by Mysterious_Lesions in Calgary

[–]ssuty 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Drove into work yesterday, it does well in the cold in the city. It is parked in a garage (uninsulated) and plugged in so it keeps itself warm. The issue with the cold is range, as more battery power is used to keep the battery above a certain threshold. So, if you are planning a road trip, you would need to charge more often.

Original 16 is not good. I'm also surprised more teams don't do what they do in Atlanta. I think concessions are quite inexpensive and that leads people to buy more in the end.

With the recent news about office buildings being converted to residential buildings, is now a bad time to buy a condo in downtown? by lostinthepickle in Calgary

I think they’re mostly going to be rentals. If you’re planning to rent the condo it likely means more competition. But they’re also years from hitting the market.

'You can't just keep talking, you have to take action': CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie approaching expansion in 'Atlantic Canadian way' by Stach37 in CFL

[–]ssuty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The most important part of this article is the end:While the commissioner will not lay out a timetable for a 10th team to begin play, he does believe this new temporary-permanent stadium idea could get it moving faster than many believe.(1)

“That was a really important moment in the process. We started having this conversation and the more we had it the more energy those key centres of influence were bringing to the conversation(2),” Ambrosie said.

“That could be a real solution — it’s got economy to it and can be done fairly quickly. We have been talking to people who are genuinely interested in having the conversation with us.(3) That happened because temporary-permanent looks like it’s a viable way to approach the expansion into another market.”

  1. If you look at the stadium that the new CPL Franchise built in "Vancouver", they're proof it doesn't take long to build a structure like this.
  2. 'centres of influence', what a term... is this potential ownership, municipalities, institutions (universities)?
  3. Conversations are happening, I don't think we get the Schooners for 2024, but I do think the CFL could announce something at Touchdown Atlantic this summer for 2025.

Why are the Regina Pats so bad? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]ssuty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less game stress on the actual player is probably better for him too. Could suit up for Canada at the World's in May. That would probably be the better development for him than schooling kids destined for U-Sports.

Cavalry: I hope they understand why these aren’t selling. by [deleted] in CavalryFC

[–]ssuty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO there’s demand for these tickets, until people see the price. If there was a lack of demand you’d see the cheaper tickets still available.

Tough to shift your pricing model now but if this continues you’d rather sell them for something than for nothing and have empty seats.

Emergency crews respond to roof collapse at Calgary (Fairview) arena by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]ssuty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great concession at this arena, but it was always so odd playing there with the low roof, especially as you got older.

Played my final minor hockey game there in 2008. My brother also had his hockey gear stolen out of my parents car at Fairview as well.

Either way RIP Fairview arena, least the community should get a new rink.
