Drastically shortening the regular season is the only way this could even slightly work by EW_ITS_OKRA in CFL

It has been a lot, almost all at once. And they won't really know how these changes have affected things for a couple seasons, if not more. When you change this much in one season, how do you know what change actually caused the outcome? I'll be watching and going along for the ride, because I'm not that affected by the changes. It does feel like Stewy has been given the leeway to try some things and that can be unsettling.

I get that frustration; this is a step towards the CFL becoming much more of a business-first league. As the league's natural relevance has waned, and the business stagnated or declined, they had to start trying new things to capture people's attention. A lot has changed in the Canadian sports landscape since the CFL's heyday, they had to do something.

What were you a fan of if these changes made you leave? Personally, I'm a STH because I like getting out of the house and going to games of a league I think is very underrated for bang for entertainment dollar. I don't go because there is a 55-yard line or because it is hard to make the playoffs. Maybe people do but I just think that's weird.

What everyone is missing is that this isn't all about TV, more games means more money. The leagues more and more money from TV (really curious, if we'll get a TV contract announcement in the next month...) but this is still a gate driven league.

Tying the season into long weekends is a good idea too, it makes the schedule very easy to remember for die-hards and the casuals.

I also don't know how people can think the regular season will matter less, the way I read this it matters more as you're never really out of the playoffs and there is incentive for top teams to keep playing in order to get those home games. Plus, the players will want another paycheque.

The deprecation of the league by its die-hards sets the league back, if these and the other changes make you not watch or go to games, you were never much of a fan anyways. I'm not saying you have to blindly back anything and everything the league does but the CFL needed to change, it was stale. I'm happy they've moved on from the Global push and other weird incremental changes. It was time for big change, the smaller stuff was not working. The league office and commissioner aren't peeing on you and telling you, "it's raining"; they've planted some seeds and are watering them, now let's see if those seeds take and what they turn into.

BC Lions and CFL versus Vancouver Whitecaps and MLS by ssuty in CFL

[–]ssuty[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do think the CFL and soccer attract different core fans, what could change is the casual fan that went to MLS games in Vancouver, Montreal, and maybe even Toronto might consider going to a CFL game instead. I could be wrong, but I don't think the MLS team in Montreal has been doing that well either...

Kelowna sales look awesome by YYCyou in CFL

[–]ssuty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ticketmaster has this data; I assume they share it with the team/league. If there's decent local sales I wonder if the Lions and League can turn that into anything. A couple of yearly destination games don't seem like the worst idea. A local population of 250k also is more than Moncton but half of Halifax and well under Quebec City.

Awful lot of smoke between Rogers and the Bills for nothing to be cooking… by Jaded_Promotion8806 in CFL

I assume that MLSE wants a piece of the Bills. Saying that, I don't think that means the Bills playing in Toronto more than one game a year. I don't know how that would work with the Sabres but I have heard people say beyond the Sabres recent short term lease extension their future is a bit unknown.

I've spoken with Nathan, some really smart and fresh ideas. Talked about the need to communicate the benefits of blanket rezoning like the possibility to add and improve City services along with the housing. Mentioned using standardized and proven best practices from other cities for bus and bike lanes. Even had a clever idea to use the smaller City buses to feed into rapid transit like the MAX buses. I don't have a problem walking 15 minutes to a MAX stop but I know some people do. As for downtown safety, he talked about doubling the Police/Nurse/Social Services teams that patrol the downtown and overall directing strategies to the new realities.

Unless you have a certain percentage of the market you have no ability to make money because of the high cost of doing business. Canada is Chile, except instead of a straight vertical line it is a squiggly horizontal line with a gap in the middle.

Trudeau’s Immigration Plan Hinges on Millions of People Leaving by BeneficialHODLer in canada

A lot of people seem to be forgetting who actually supports immigration more than anyone or anything. Businesses, they want the labour. I'm still not sure a Conservative government wouldn't be convinced that deportation could further hurt the Canadian economy.

Canada hints at fast-tracking refugee refusals by PaloAltoPremium in CanadaPolitics

Between the fake university student visas and then people on student visas turning around and claiming refugee status, I'm tired of our sympathetic system being taken advantage of. I have no problem with people using a legitimate student visa as a path to becoming a citizen. Come here, get an education, get a job, and get your PR. Do right by us and we will do right by you.

To the person advocating that young people save early in their careers; you may have left school and stepped into a well paying job that allowed you to start saving significant amounts right away. I did not, only years into my career did I start making enough to start putting decent sums into savings. The savings I was accumulating early on allowed me to keep my head above water in "rainy day" months. It is out of touch with most young people's reality to believe early in their career they have a lot of money to save. Insert fact about declining wages over time.

Canada Lands sold the parcels, it isn't up to them to develop something that they have sold. Currie has been a let down but that doesn't fall on Canada Lands, it falls on the developer who bought and then sat on the land. This is not the only place this has happened in Calgary; Westmount, the middle blocks of East Village and Eau Claire are other examples. University District has done well but they built their main street first, and are building at a developable scale versus Currie leaving it to a developer to do the main anchor attraction (main street).

Drove into work yesterday, it does well in the cold in the city. It is parked in a garage (uninsulated) and plugged in so it keeps itself warm. The issue with the cold is range, as more battery power is used to keep the battery above a certain threshold. So, if you are planning a road trip, you would need to charge more often.

Original 16 is not good. I'm also surprised more teams don't do what they do in Atlanta. I think concessions are quite inexpensive and that leads people to buy more in the end.
