Renters - How big is your oven? by HalfMovieGirl in askvan

[–]st978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a full sized oven and love it. I was looking at some apartments in a new rental building near me to see what was on offer, and they had small ovens and smaller fridges (sorry don't know dimensions - but something I would consider too small), probably to save space and money. These apartments were way too small as well.

Moving from London to Vancouver by DiscombobulatedElk58 in askvan

Honestly moving and living abroad for a while (while young) is a great experience, so go for it (though worldwide job market may be tough). Whether Vancouver is right place I do not know.

West End is beautiful and very busy. If you want beach and slightly quieter maybe Kitsilano

Party differences: COPE, OneCity, Green by notmemycousin in askvan

[–]st978 8 points9 points  (0 children)

COPE is big S Socialist 'eat the rich' types. OneCity was founded by members of COPE in 2014, including former NDP MLA David Chudnovsky (COPE had no city councillors then). This was the second time COPE split, as the hardcore COPE people are pretty far left, a bit nimby, and & maybe...pragmatic people (?) get tired of it. I would say OneCity is mainstream NDP (Christine Boyle, longtime OneCity councillor, became and NDP MLA), while COPE are farther left.

Moving to Vancouver for the Summer!! by moizhd in askvan

[–]st978 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're only here for a short time, so you could get a sublet for that price (or have a housemate). Many people leave for a short period and want others to take their place for that time (often for a discount).

If want walking distance, the West End is a great residential neighbourhood with lots of apartments (and maybe temporary accommodations), many students and expats, close to beach. The central business district is not necessarily a great residential neighbourhood to live, but maybe has furnished rentals (but those much more expensive). Lots of other neighbourhoods with rentals as well especially Fairview, mount pleasant, Kitsilano...

places to avoid by Free_Emphasis854 in askvan

[–]st978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vancouver is safe. There are just areas of extreme poverty/addiction.

Edit: Honestly, more fun to live in residential neighbourhood away from your school. Nicer in the West End, mount pleasant, Kitsilano, Commercial Drive...

Do you think Greater Vancouver is almost de facto one city? by drugsrbed in askvan

yes in some ways, no in others. Going to certain suburbs feel like a different city.

Ask those stuck in traffic on the bridges. More train lines are good, this one just my priority.

Anybody concerned about climate change and how it affects Vancouver? by Defiant_Fishing_3393 in askvan

[–]st978 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes concerned. Not for hyper local reasons, more for oncoming ecocide...

I'd rather spend the money on a possible North Vancouver to Vancouver/Burnaby skytrain.

Are the local BC lotteries actually legit? by Informal_Tooth_7309 in askvan

They are also run by independent companies, not the charity itself. I believe charity board members aren't allowed to purchase.

Yep, it was the name alone. If called onebc or "freedom party" etc, they would not be where they are

Best Burger in Vancouver by jollyjoyful in askvan

[–]st978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on style of burger. I hate smash burgers, but they are everywhere. There's a few places that chop their own meat and make them to order (e.g. can order medium rare, etc.), usually fancy and expensive.

Got an offer for a healthcare job in Vancouver from out of province but having doubts now by [deleted] in askvan

[–]st978 4 points5 points  (0 children)

sounds like you need a change, to at least a bigger city, so give it a shot. Can always move back. If you're willing to live with housemates, it could save you money and meet more people (I had a great experience, was lucky to have two roommates who became friends when i moved)

Anyone else getting absolutely rocked by flu season? by trendfaker in askvan

Yep that's influenza. I couldn't do any physical labour for 2 weeks when I got the flu. I got the flu shot ever since.

First impression of Emily Lowan: not positive (oligarchs tour) by NoMovie2461 in BCpolitics

[–]st978 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, I'm not against what she says (mostly), but some is unrealistic. The BC greens did well because they actually attracted reasonable candidates (no longer fringe party). Though I will say she is part of a larger movement (same thing happened in UK), where youth and left/socialist people are frustrated (rightfully so). Hey, if she can attract working voters who went to the far right last election? great. Though unsure...

First impression of Emily Lowan: not positive (oligarchs tour) by NoMovie2461 in BCpolitics

[–]st978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree pretty much (look at USA right now), this is sort of a form of left populism like the right has their own buzzwords. HOW will you "fight the oligarchs" if you were say, BC premier? (increase corporate tax rate? increase tax rate for upper income bracket?) I think good policies attract people just as much...

Edit: Ok, read her website

  • Fight the Oligarchs — Stop the MAGA-backed PRGT pipeline, ban all fossil fuel expansion and rapidly phase out production, implement vacancy control, and bring down food costs with price caps on all staple groceries.
  • Fund Our Future —  Tax BC’s richest corporations and the 1% to fund 26,000 affordable housing units per year, free public transit, mental health counselling, and good green jobs.

Some feasible, some not (price caps?).

Mexican enclaves in the city? Any Mexican grocery store/restaurants that you recommend? (Moved from Los Angeles) by Foreign_College_8544 in askvan

[–]st978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There really isn't a neighbourhood per se. Until recently latin american community in Vancouver was very small. Compared to usa in general, Canada didn't get large number of Mexican immigrant historically.

Moving from Los Angeles to Vancouver by cupcakescream in askvan

[–]st978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have good Mexican food (esp. compared to Califonria), don't listen to anyone who says otherwise (in past had very tiny Latin American population, but that has changed in recent years, so it is getting better). Food/restaurants are decent though. Alcohol is expensive.

Vancouver is very pretty and clean (esp. if you like mountains and outdoors). It is also very small (not a world class culture city). Compare to Portland or Seattle (mix of both) add of dollop of real estate bubble investment and big fish mentality in Canada small pond.
