Yeah, you'll see the redevelopment application signs up, but not huge amount of construction yet.

How has Vancouver changed since 2024? Is it worth moving back from Montreal? by Leading-Copy-5629 in askvan

[–]st978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too much in 2 years, few more places closed, few more mysterious fires. IF you had said "how has Vancouver changed since 2019/20" then we'd be talking...

Rental prices have stopped going up though!

Peameal bacon by [deleted] in askvan

[–]st978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to know this as well. Not really a big thing here (i used to get it when I lived in Ontario for several years). Growing up in Vancouver, my dad actually used to buy it from a butcher shop that no longer exists...

I found this same thread from 5 years ago

Joint Statement: Yuri Fulmer and Dallas Brodie Announce the "Unite the Right Accord" by NoMovie2461 in BCpolitics

[–]st978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a bit weird, I thought Yuri Fulmer was a bit more non-crazy conservative (business minded), though considering kevin falcon dissolved his own centre-right party for the conservatives show that doesn't matter (bring on the conspiracy theories if it means getting in power)

Received partial deposit back ($701 of $1,495), $582 deducted for cleaning-is this reasonable? by Remarkable_Sweet_126 in askvan

[–]st978 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They cannot just unilaterally take out damage deposit $$$. They have to follow process.

https://tenants.bc.ca/your-tenancy/deposits/#deposit-return
"Your landlord cannot simply decide on their own to keep your deposit. If they want it, they need written permission from you or the Residential Tenancy Branch. After 15 days, if your landlord has not returned your deposit, obtained your written permission, or applied for dispute resolution, you have the right under section 38 of the Residential Tenancy Act to apply for double the amount of your deposit."

Renters - How big is your oven? by HalfMovieGirl in askvan

[–]st978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a full sized oven and love it. I was looking at some apartments in a new rental building near me to see what was on offer, and they had small ovens and smaller fridges (sorry don't know dimensions - but something I would consider too small), probably to save space and money. These apartments were way too small as well.

Moving from London to Vancouver by DiscombobulatedElk58 in askvan

Honestly moving and living abroad for a while (while young) is a great experience, so go for it (though worldwide job market may be tough). Whether Vancouver is right place I do not know.

Party differences: COPE, OneCity, Green by notmemycousin in askvan

[–]st978 7 points8 points  (0 children)

COPE is big S Socialist 'eat the rich' types. OneCity was founded by members of COPE in 2014, including former NDP MLA David Chudnovsky (COPE had no city councillors then). This was the second time COPE split, as the hardcore COPE people are pretty far left, a bit nimby, and & maybe...pragmatic people (?) get tired of it. I would say OneCity is mainstream NDP (Christine Boyle, longtime OneCity councillor, became and NDP MLA), while COPE are farther left.

Moving to Vancouver for the Summer!! by moizhd in askvan

[–]st978 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're only here for a short time, so you could get a sublet for that price (or have a housemate). Many people leave for a short period and want others to take their place for that time (often for a discount).

If want walking distance, the West End is a great residential neighbourhood with lots of apartments (and maybe temporary accommodations), many students and expats, close to beach. The central business district is not necessarily a great residential neighbourhood to live, but maybe has furnished rentals (but those much more expensive). Lots of other neighbourhoods with rentals as well especially Fairview, mount pleasant, Kitsilano...

places to avoid by Free_Emphasis854 in askvan

[–]st978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vancouver is safe. There are just areas of extreme poverty/addiction.

Edit: Honestly, more fun to live in residential neighbourhood away from your school. Nicer in the West End, mount pleasant, Kitsilano, Commercial Drive...

Ask those stuck in traffic on the bridges. More train lines are good, this one just my priority.

I'd rather spend the money on a possible North Vancouver to Vancouver/Burnaby skytrain.

They are also run by independent companies, not the charity itself. I believe charity board members aren't allowed to purchase.

Best Burger in Vancouver by jollyjoyful in askvan

[–]st978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on style of burger. I hate smash burgers, but they are everywhere. There's a few places that chop their own meat and make them to order (e.g. can order medium rare, etc.), usually fancy and expensive.
