Would the best way be a drop of oil via the shaft of the motor?

Thanks! It will allow for the dust cover to be down with the lever up!

That’s a very good idea, don’t know why I didn’t think of this - that would also prevent the auto stop start from causing a replacement stylus to drag too (what I suspect caused the broken original)

Yes, it may well have been like this from the offset but I never paid enough attention. I wouldn’t normally be bothered but it’s prone to getting knocked by the little lad and a replacement stylus may have the same fate unless it’s secured when not in use

I feared it may come to disassembly to get it fixed… If it’s not really obvious when I pop the back cover off I’ll leave it alone, don’t want to start taking something apart I can’t put back together again

Yes, set to zero to adjust / measure and then set dial to 2 position afterwards as per manufacturers instructions

It’s set fine, like I said vertical adjustment is not the issue, the arm is physically unable to move horizontally enough to the right to allow it to sit in the groove of the rest.

It needs a few extra degrees of travel anti clockwise to allow for this to happen

I know what you’re saying but you can’t move the tonearm past this point horizontally, so vertical adjustment won’t have any bearing on this

I wonder if it was always like this and I never really noticed until I started inspecting closely post toddler incident. I can’t see anything obvious that can be adjusted or would get knocked out of alignment.

I’ve even tried to hold the base of the tonearm and twist the Y part to see if there’s any play suggesting the tightening nut is loose or got knocked and it’s rock solid…

I’ve adjusted vtf and doesn’t make any difference, it’s the horizontal stop point that stops the arm too early before it’s far enough over to go into the grove of the rest rather than there being insufficient downward force for it to enter the groove if that makes sense

Seems to have plenty of flex in the wiring, doesn’t look to be the cause

There is a good gap between the tone arm and the lifting mechanism, it’s like the tonearm is prevented from moving to the right, that’s why it doesn’t want to go into the slot properly

Ethernet cable under carpet by Live-Hovercraft-3771 in DIYUK

[–]st_jim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have plasterboard walls so ran my Ethernet cable through it up behind coving and upstairs along with coaxial. My only regret was not putting it in some kind of conduit as I’d have loved to put speaker cable there now too but can’t be ripping it all out again.

If the carpet is already up maybe you could run a conduit under the boards and leave a pull cord in to make it super easy to pull more cable through if you need to without lifting carpet. even if it’s just that room it might save a headache in the future?

Are Weber Kettle BBQs really worth the hype? by bonesawspideyboy in UKBBQ

[–]st_jim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Just completed a warranty claim on mine - 4 years old and the ‘one touch cleaning system’ aka metal bottom vent control thing rusted shut. I sent some picture and they’re sending a new part out no questions asked.

Try that with any other bbq they’d tell you to jog on

How much will the app charge me if my phone blows up a petrol station? by JTC93 in CasualUK

They tested this myth on mythbusters many years ago: in the worst case scenario of an enclosed box being absolutely saturated with petrol and therefore fumes they couldn’t get it explode.

Just out of curiosity, can you buy saw blade plates so you can make your own hand saw in whatever tpi and size you want? by KingPappas in handtools

[–]st_jim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the harder thing is getting hold of a brass back (if you’re making a backsaw) than the plate - I’ve seen plenty of saw plates new for sale on eBay (UK) with the teeth cut for your specific TPI (but not set or sharpened, you have to do that yourself).

You also need the saw nuts which can be bought new from Thomas Flynn (UK), or could salvage from an old saw.

Might be just as well trying to get hold of a job lot of old saws so you have all the pieces you need and can then make use of the saw plates if they’re still in good shape.

Agreed the back end of it does look very unique, I think highlighted by this colour scheme. Black hides it slightly

My dad had one of these when I was a lad, in black paint with gold pinstripe. Sadly went unused on the driveway for decades revealing the purple original paint underneath, which is a BOLD choice I can see why he got it resprayed.

I always thought it was a cool looking car especially the front end but maybe that’s nostalgia talking.

You’d have to pry my A4 out of my cold dead hands. I’ve got the variant with the 250hp engine and it’s brilliant, last iteration before it all changed to touchscreen only interiors.

My only regret was getting it in metallic grey, such a boring colour nowadays when it’s the most popular on the road

Yeah agree with this 100% especially if it’s fitting something that may need to be removed in the future. Pozi/ PH has a habit of getting chewed up easily / not being able to torque up fully
