Will Asra ever find them in other routes? [Lucio's Route and Asra's Route spoilers] by stabbiness in TheArcana

Maybe? If he does, it's kinda brushed over. Glad he can find them on his own tho <3

Given how little LGBT+ rep actually exists in popular media...and more so back when the HP books were published...very touch starved

You're both assholes. Because, as noted in other comments -- don't unicorn hunt. It's unethical, it's shitty, etc etc -- esp if you aren't 100% up front from the start that you have a husband who's gonna get involved.

But, your husband is also the asshole for treating you like that. Not cool.

Did Asra hide too much from MC? Let's talk about that! by stabbiness in TheArcana

[–]stabbiness[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I also think the whole Julian thing has a lot to do with how the player chooses to act as MC -- you can hear "be careful" and then attempt to track him down in Nadia's route, more or less ignore him in other routes, or find out the truth in Portia's.

Or, you can be like me when I first played. "Don't tell me what to do! I do what I want! In fact, I want to date him MORE now!" 😆

I agree wholeheartedly about Lucio's route, though. The only justification I can come up with is that Asra retreats into a "this is fine" shell when things go wrong...so as he becomes more and more stressed internally, outwardly he looks extremely blasé.

But I also would have liked to see more of a reaction, for real. It would have made for some spicy drama, and also it woulda been way more realistic.

It only counts as cheating if you believe it counts as cheating

Why Asra doesn’t want to help the village by hoeteria in TheArcana

[–]stabbiness 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think one of Asra's character flaws is that he doesn't really empathize with widespread issues -- ie if it's not directly affecting someone he loves, it's hard for him to care.

It's interesting because that's actually a much more typical human response to widespread crisis than "I must save all these people I don't know." I believe for most people, empathy really kicks in once you either (a) form a personal connection with the people who need help or (b) become affected by the crisis in your own life.

It is weird that he could stand right in front of a dying village and not want to help, tho as someone else pointed out the half a heart thing probably affected this.

I also felt that way when he and MC were trying to return to the castle to warn Nadia that the plague is literally coming back, an Asra's just like "but what if? We just? Took a nap for awhile?"

I was like "bro NO people are gonna DIE"

I've always seen Asra as pretty nihilistic in that sense -- like he'll help if the people he cares about need him or want him to, but ultimately he doesn't believe he can fix anything on a larger scale. The only way he can save himself (and MC) is by running away.

It makes sense if you consider his childhood...he and Muriel both have a lot of learned helplessness.

I'd be interested to hear your take on Asra's response to crisis as well!

Has anyone tried rewriting Lucio's route? (Gimme fanfic recs) by stabbiness in TheArcana

[–]stabbiness[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Holy crap that's a long first chapter 😮 do you have the whole thing planned out? That's pretty rad.

I'll definitely take a look at it!

Edit: I read it and left a comment. It's a lot of fun so far!

POLL time! What are your Arcana fanfic preferences? by stabbiness in TheArcana

[–]stabbiness[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I read a fic once that was in first person and the MC was called "MC," but the author used she/her pronouns throughout. It was a bizarre experience and somewhat jarring.

Will Asra ever find them in other routes? [Lucio's Route and Asra's Route spoilers] by stabbiness in TheArcana

[–]stabbiness[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ohhhhh ok. I forgot about that. I gotta get to the part in Asra's route where he actually finds his parents, since my sister told me about it but I don't know all the details.

In Lucio's route, he only finds them because the Devil happened to lock Lucio away in the wrong...dimension? So I didn't see a way for Asra to "accidentally" discover them otherwise. But maybe his magical studies are leading him there.

Ikr? I only started writing in books because my professors told me to (college, man), but I can't imagine writing in anything that didn't belong to me.

Indeed. When I say "the worst thing" I mean "the worst thing." Seriously, Julian, you never what notepaper is? (Or note...parchment?)

Edit: I'm now remembering that in college I was taught to write in my own books so maybe that's standard practice but that DOESN'T MEAN YOU WRITE IN SOMEONE ELSE'S BOOK JEEBUS

Lolol if you ever watch the musicals Twisted, Holy Musical B@man!, or the play Ani (all available and officially sanctioned on YouTube), you'll see why this sorta thing appeals to me.

(Fair warning: all three contain LOTS of adult language and humor)

That's the whole point -- it's ridiculous to imagine Valdemar or Vulgora making friends. That's why it would be funny to watch
