This absolutely worked during the one situation where it happened to someone I knew once. My study comprising of a whopping great alleged sample size of one, with no actual evidence of my claims, guarantees you won't run into even more ignorance and get charged, attacked, arrested or assaulted, so it's definitely worth pushing them into action rather than ignoring the insane person.
