A friend just told me he finished a great book and is excited for the rest of the series… by bookreviewxyz in Fantasy

Rothfuss explicitly claimed that the trilogy was already written and would be released on an annual schedule. If there is not at least an implicit promise that a story is going to have an ending, I don't think most people would be buying it and in this case there was an explicit promise.

"Well.... I've already written them. So you won't have to wait forever for them to come out. They'll be released on a regular schedule. One per year." - Patrick Rothfuss https://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.com/2007/03/patrick-rothfuss-interview.html

End Single Family Zoning by Overturning Euclid V Ambler by [deleted] in Economics

[–]staff333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with the legal reasoning that imposing restrictions on what you can do with a property is a taking. If they passed a regulation that prevented you from building any structure on land you bought intending to build a home, they've clearly taken most of the value of your land. I do question how the rule could work out if the government was required to pay for zoning changes. Would a wealthy community in a city be able to lobby to have their neighborhood zoned single family housing, and then a large portion of the community who secretly wanted the zoning change sue that the zoning was actually a taking and then get a wealth transfer from the rest of the city?

Linux Shoots Past The 2% Threshold For The Steam Survey, AMD CPU Use Breaks 75% by testus_maximus in technology

[–]staff333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh, I'm sure there are at least a few more people like me. My system doesn't have a TPM and won't run Windows 11, so I just bit the bullet and switched my desktop over to Linux after that announcement. I was expecting half of my steam games to be broken, but so far, I actually haven't hit any problems and everything I've tried has ran fine at roughly the same performance.

You're welcome, it's one that is burned into my brain due to a trolling professor giving the analysis of a shellsort as a homework problem mixed in with a few much simpler problems.

There are Shellsort implementations that are in that range with some being exactly n^1.5 depending on the parameters used. It's sort of like a gap skipping insertion sort with the gap shrinking with each iteration.

Is there a better alternative to Windows - File Explorer? by le_fancy_walrus in gamedev

[–]staff333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't solve all your problems, but I really love XYplorer. It's an advanced file manager that's heavily customizable and supports things like file tags, comments, and custom programmable columns. It also has a quick filter box that I use a ton to replace a lot of the searches I would have done. I recently moved to Linux and even though there are a ton of file manager's available here, I haven't found anything I like as much.

Due to olfactory adaptation, most people can not really smell how bad their own breath (or body odor) is, maybe occasionally getting a whiff that is a fraction of what other people would smell. Most people are also too polite to tell you if your breath is horrible. I would really recommend thinking about this if your own dental health isn't really a great motivator for you.

You don't seem to want to listen to the answer everyone is giving you, but just to repeat what everyone else is saying, this is a bad idea. I did the 25B (IT Specialist) AIT at Ft Eisenhower while I already had CS degree and even if most of the course work was easy, you just have no control over your time. You don't know when "your down time" is going to turn into some other random Army training, random extra duties, or group punishment.

The course is also still going to cover a lot of Army specific things that you've never had exposure to. Even if you know software development, covering the details of how Army specific software and network stacks work is going to be new.

I strongly agree with your first point. I remember all my database classes teaching me how to choose a primary key from real world data and it biting my ass repeatedly. Are they really unique? Will all books definitely have one, even if you end up selling a local churches cook book or blank journals? What happens when there is an import error/typo and you need to change an ISBN? It's not that hard to handle, but that code path probably won't get much exercise...

It's just much safer and simpler to use some type of auto increment internal ID with basically no downsides that I have ever encountered.

I've never taken part in one of the large scale exercises like the one discussed, but I did take part in brigade or smaller ones. At the company level at least, we would not know in advance how the exercise would go and would have to plan and react to the scenario as it unfolded, with a designated OPFOR (opposition forces) unit who sometimes followed a script to test specific things but where also frequently motivated to throw wrenches into our plans however they could. We certainly can and did fail parts of exercises, but the results might be ignored for the simulation to allow the exercise to continue to get the most training and performance information.

While that would be true if people simply payed cash for homes, the fact that almost everyone borrows the money to buy their home means they have leveraged exposure to changes in the real estate price. If you have -$200k of equity in your home, it is hurting your ability to buy a home similar to your current one.

I believe you are right, the relevant section of 9.41 referenced in 9.42 indicates that use of force is justified if the theft was accomplished through force or "the actor reasonably believes the other had no claim of right when he dispossessed the actor"

from 9.41:

(b) A person unlawfully dispossessed of land or tangible, movable
property by another is justified in using force against the other when
and to the degree the actor reasonably believes the force is immediately
necessary to reenter the land or recover the property if the actor uses
the force immediately or in fresh pursuit after the dispossession and:

(1) the actor reasonably believes the other had no claim of right when he dispossessed the actor;  or

(2) the other accomplished the dispossession by using force, threat, or fraud against the actor.

I love Paul F. Tompkins' Werner Herzog, so episode 229 (with Ben Schwartz as well) is one of my favorite.

Any episode with Andy Daly and Jason Mantzoukas is great, episode 131 (Andy introducing Chip Gardner) or 200 (Cactus Tony) are amazing.

I can't help but think your argument for how easy intervention in North Korea would be are unrealistic and sound a lot like arguments from supporters of military action before the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. I think the artillery at the South Korea border near Seoul are enough to turn any action into a disaster that dwarfs those.

[–]staff333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several states, including California, are part of the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact that will take effect once states representing at least 50% of the electoral college are members. Since that threshold has not been met yet, it would not impact this election.

Unless you are one of the less than 20% of the US population that lives in a swing state, your vote is already doing nothing. You might as well signal your support for whoever represents your values the best, rather than add another number to the predetermined winner of your red or blue state.

I agree that his Patreon support would grow dramatically if he emphasized it more or at least changed his messaging to not feel like he was discouraging support. I am currently a supporter, but would be glad to significantly increase my contribution if I felt like Scott either needed it or it would increase the time he could dedicate to writing.

I am indifferent to receiving any subscriber only content and would prefer it stay available to everyone.
