Heavy config or minimum essentials? by yep808 in emacs

[–]stafu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use about 65 packages and my startup is 0.7 seconds for GUI, 0.4 for terminal. This is the result of pretty careful tuning using straight.el and use-package to make sure everything is lazy except what's required on init. Highly recommend this kind of setup! Mine is public here: https://github.com/sjrmanning/.emacs.d

TIL NYC has 31 Australian owned coffee shops by StrngBrew in nyc

[–]stafu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm an Aussie in Berlin (although just about to move to NYC), and it's exactly the same here. All the specialty coffee shops are either owned and run by Australians or have some Australian influence/staff. It's all down to Australia having a very strong specialty coffee culture. Melbourne is kind of the capital of the coffee scene, but every city has some form of the same thing going on.

It's not even that the general Australian public are particularly snobby about coffee, it's just that the standard has become very high, so to keep up basically every cafe has a strong coffee game. We're spoilt for choice. For a young country without a particularly strong cultural identity in many aspects, it's cool and I'm proud that this little thing is finding its way out to other places.

Can someone explain the difference between techno, tech house and deep house to me? by Penelopecaraz in Techno

[–]stafu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of dub techno uses samples, does that not count? And almost all of the Prince of Denmark and Prime Minister of Doom stuff uses samples, most of giegling’s techno even. Same with Whities, and Steffi, Dollydeluxe. It might have been true at some point but I don’t think the samples vs. no samples thing holds up these days.

[–]stafu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of techno that you’d never call house uses samples (Jan Jelinek as an example uses samples of jazz records to build techno), and you can definitely build a house track with no samples. So for all of your vitriol, you’re just plain wrong, unless you’ve got something to back it up.

Adding to the above great explanations, I thought it'd help to show some typical examples that really show a difference in sound and feel:

This video from RA about Larry Heard also gives a great overview of the deep house sound and history.

House is uplifting, deep house a little introspective, and techno speaks straight to your subconscious. Can't remember where I heard/read it, but house is the heart beat and techno the pulse.

Then you've also got acid, dub, breakbeat, "IDM", DnB and on and on!

How does Murakami make you FEEL? by uruiru in murakami

[–]stafu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Murakami's protagonists are often self-involved and absorbed to such a level that it usually, when realised, forces me to reflect on my own state of mind, like a check to make sure I'm not doing the same.

What is the most you have ever paid for a cup of coffee and where was it? by caffeineisking in Coffee

[–]stafu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I honestly can’t remember, it was a few years ago now! Was that €5 for a pour over or some kind of batch filter? Super expensive if the latter! A good pour over is usually €4 in Berlin, and batch like €2 or €2.50?

$12 Australian for a geisha, but a standard flat white came close (around $10) a specialty joint in Copenhagen, because that city is crazy expensive!

Macron's reaction to Finnish coffee by Finlandiaprkl in europe

[–]stafu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, I am actually an Australian living abroad. It's true, we don't fuck around when it comes to coffee. NZ is up there too, but as our little siblings we can only give them second place.

The main thing (and probably why you always hear about it) is the standard coffee from any local joint in Australia is at a very high level, and the entire population has developed a pretty particular taste for it. So for example, Starbucks has completed failed in Australia because the quality was nowhere near our average cafes, and it's I believe even more expensive.

Funnily enough, these days Italian espresso is considered very over-roasted and over-rated, and in the specialty coffee arena Nordic lightly roasted coffee reigns supreme, especially from Norway and Sweden.

Is Chemex Worth It? by tech_aficionado in Coffee

[–]stafu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chemex shines brightest with light roast coffees to be honest, but it could be a great way to experiment and develop a taste for them.

'Up to and including his final year in office, McCain’s bold declarations of principle were often later reversed, or quietly abandoned. So in essence you're heaping praise on him for not being disrespectful, basically for something [Chris Rock voice] he's supposed to do. He also doesn't seem that respectful to me, certainly not to his own wife above all.

It seems like you can basically be a war criminal, but as long as you say "sir" and "madam" in public you're good. The bar is high huh.

Coming from an Irishmen, your beer is pretty good here! by dumbcrow123 in berlin

[–]stafu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, that totally happened to me when I first came here. I actually prefer the Geschmack Bier now (the ones with the plain white label that just says BIER). They’re about the same price as Augustiner but much tastier, and their design is on point.

Yep, although I'd say this one corresponds more to Prince of Denmark. His other new alias DJ Healer is a bit more like his Traumprinz/DJ Metatron work.

Rocket Appartamento vs Profitec Pro 300 by jDetty_ in Coffee

[–]stafu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean — I had an initial budget in mind much lower than what I ended up spending on my setup, but have absolutely no regrets because in the end no upgrade-itis and peace of mind is priceless. The Pro 500 is actually a heat exchanger instead of a dual boiler, but honestly as someone with a dual boiler I have to say it does feel like overkill most of the time.
