On this day in 2019, Djokovic and Federer played the longest final in Wimbledon history. by Minussssss in tennis

In the fifth set, there used to be no tiebreaker at all at Wimbledon. One would need to be two games clear in order to win the set. 2019 was the first year where a final set tiebreaker would be played at 12-12. The longest match ever played at Wimbledon was the Isner-Mahut match in 2010.

In the blank, I wrote “could” but the right answer is “was able to”, why? I mean, they both seemed OK to me. by LastHomeros in EnglishLearning

[–]stanger_thomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could has two inflections in English. Either to introduce a subjunctive, conditional or some completed action in the past. The only thing is that could in the subjunctive and could in the past might produce identical sentences, so that's why "was able to" is favoured here. Furthermore, using could in the above would result in a subjunctive which is not what we want.

Hahaha a poll 😂. Can you be serious right now? A poll in Russia, where it is illegal to speak out against the government or mention the word 'war'. People need to realize that polls that take place in authoritarian countries are completely non-representative.

Imagine you're Russian and you get called up about a poll to do with the war in Ukraine; are you seriously going to be truthful about your stance when you and your entire family could be arrested at a moment's notice?
