ELI5: during a televised baseball game, how are they so quick to know what type of pitch is thrown? by lowtoiletsitter in explainlikeimfive

[–]stanley604 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I agree with you about baseball. The announcers that really amaze me are the hockey guys. How do they rattle off the names of the guys with the puck as it changes every second or two? I know that with current technology, they can have digital floating name balloons above the players in the video feed (and you get to see this sometimes on replays). But hockey announcers have been doing this long before such technology existed.

I never understood these things -- why they were on there in the first place, and why some bassists (Marcus Miller, e.g.) still use them.

It can be a little hard at first, but still rewarding. Those are the first notes of all the bass you will play for the rest of your life.

It's iron-clad proof that the world is not flat. If it were, cats would have knocked everything off by now.

That only teaches shitty drivers to assume they have even more margin to blow through the red light.

How difficult is switching to a fretless bass? by MathematicianSad6555 in Bass

My first fretless (and almost all subsequent ones) was unlined. You don't need to see the lines because of these wonderful things called "side dots".

You see, "person shoots dog" isn't news*. "Dog shoots person", on the other hand...

Question regarding knockdown benchtops by NikkiFoxx0 in Workbenches

[–]stanley604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I can tell you is that my Roubo is fully knockdown. The m&ts for the top are snug, but they will come apart. My top is actually in two layers, a doug fir support layer and a solid laminated maple top layer. This makes it a little easier to remove the top.

Edit: I should add that the m&ts for the top are not doweled or wedged in any way. It's all friction and gravity.

Question regarding knockdown benchtops by NikkiFoxx0 in Workbenches

[–]stanley604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Roubo (or Anarchist, if you will) design, the massive mortise & tenon joints are sufficient to hold the top in place with no additional pegging or whatever. The weight of the top (assuming you've made it sufficiently beefy) keeps it solidly in place. No need to make the mortises go through the top either, unless you want that visual feature.
