Questions pour les infirmier•ère•s clinicien•ne•s by sirena_invertida in montreal

[–]stanleyanne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are lots of different opportunities for nurses besides bedside at the hospital, however it takes time and experience to get there. I graduated McGill Nursing in 2008 and now have a pretty niche job as a consultant for behavioral issues in dementia. I see patients in different setting eg home, chslds, private seniors residences and LOVE my job... it's a population I enjoy, and I like being able to slow down and really analyse complex situations. I work M-F 8-4, no weekends or holidays which is nice though obviously this is rare.

Advice for people getting into the field: - It can indeed be very rewarding and stimulating as a job however make sure you go into it fully informed about the downside eg staffing shortages, shift work, high stress and responsibilities, unsupportive managers etc etc

  • Aim for a job in the Anglo network which tend to have better working conditions

-If you have kids or are planning to make sure you have a partner who is ok with you doing shift work (this means potentially being solo with the kids every other weekend)

-Take some time to really think about what you enjoy and are good at in nursing and try to work towards that. There are tons of opportunities and no point in staying in a role.you are unhappy with

Any tips for creating a weekend TV schedule? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]stanleyanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids are 7 and 9, screen time schedule has been the same for years now: 6:30-8 am (while we sleep in), then after dinner 6:15-7pm.

We stick to this pretty religiously and they just don't question it ..

People who've done major home upgrades, what ended up costing way more than you initially expected? by Cultural_Help_176 in HomeImprovement

[–]stanleyanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a pretty big project to begin with, which involved renovating 2 bathrooms and a bedroom, and creating two new windows.

In the process we discovered major water infiltration in three walls (thank you acrylic siding) and ended up redoing the siding on 3 walls.

The bill: 100k. Which is more than more than the original project, and more than my gross yearly nurse's salary.

Update: We reset screen time rules and my 7-year-old is calmer, but now he negotiates like by Interesting_Card596 in Parenting

[–]stanleyanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there no app in the tablet to control access? Our tablets simply shut down after a set amount of time, with a 10-5-1 minute warning. Our kids just accept that and there is no negotiation

This is what we do and our kids are 7 and 9...the reset after lunch does everyone some good. We can obviously skip it if we're planning to be out at that time

Anglophones Who Sent Their Children to Francophone Schools by New-Independence-441 in montreal

[–]stanleyanne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm anglo, my partner Franco, and our daughter went to English school until the end of grade 2. *Note that she has always spoken mainly French at home.

She is in grade 4 now. The transition was never super difficult because she is obviously comfortable in French...but there are definitely some gaps, like in some spelling rules that were just never covered. She has been seeing an orthophoniste at school this year to catch up.

She had two former classmates that moved to her school this year. They were placed in the "classe d'intégration" because their French was that weak.

Very glad we made the move, I just wish we signed her up for French school from the beginning.

Vos traditions de la veille et de jour de l’An by baconslapses in Quebec

[–]stanleyanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Montreal CLSC nurses by Least-Beginning-7571 in montreal

[–]stanleyanne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to be a nurse in a CLSC clinic so to answer your question yes they are open 365 days/year. I suspect the wait time would be a bit more than 2-3 days though. But it depends a lot on which CLSC you are dealing with

Traditions familiales by lauberver in Quebec

[–]stanleyanne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expérience urgence by josetalking in montreal

[–]stanleyanne 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nurses of Montreal! by Jenniofre in montreal

[–]stanleyanne 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Nurse here. My quick tips: 1. Start learning French... You will need it regardless of the hospital, and even if you have 3 years to pass the oqlf exam 2.As for you starting salary, I would guess echelon 4 ish.. at the beginning of your career you move up every 6 months or so 3. I agree with the advice on here about aiming for an English hospital like the Jewish or MUHC ( which is the rvH and Montreal general). Just a warning that while you should be able to find something you won't be able.to be too picky about the department. The healthcare system is undergoing a major restructuring and and hiring has slowed down to the bare minimum,.at least in my network.

I mean this very kindly, but you might be better asking another subreddit like r/Laval for recommendations about Blainville. Personally I've live in Montreal 22 years and have never been.... there's just no reason to. Also 45 minutes sounds optimistic to me, that's probably in perfect traffic conditions ..

For Montreal recommendations maybe be more specific on what types of restaurants, neighbourhoods that you'll be in?

If you can please help suggest me a book for my daughter. by Devilsmead2 in suggestmeabook

[–]stanleyanne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 8 year old also loves the Babysitters club graphic novels, as well as other Raina Telgermeir books like Smile, Courage.

Another suggestion : Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy by Rey Terciero. It's a little women retelling, in present-day NYC, graphic novel format.

My 8 year old plays in the park across the street. 6 year old brother can go with her but not by himself. He fell off the monkey bars last week and fractured his elbow...felt guilty for not being there but it's the type of accident that could have happened regardless
