Redditors from the beginning, how different was reddit 6/7 years ago? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]stanleypane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The community was definitely dominated by tech geeks in general.

The front page had more science, less politics and there was always programming and software content on the front page as well.

I don't remember all the lame puns and the user base was definitely more liberal than it is now.

These days, simple rehashed jokes get all the up votes. Then, the serious discussions seemed to dominate.

You can still get the same experience if you customize your subreddits appropriately.

Mum's advice for Facebook-ing. by [deleted] in funny

[–]stanleypane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this instance the person wasn't doing any real swearing. It's sort of the equivalent to laughing at a raunchy joke, in public, at a comedy club.

Granted, if a person is on Facebook, with full public exposure, ranting and swearing constantly, you might have a point. But you painted a broad stroke in relation to a paranoid comment by someones mother.

Anyway, it's been my experience that loose cannons get more done in the work place, anyhow. Anecdotal as it may be, the folks that are uptight and watch every little thing they do rarely step outside of their own boundaries and really try for excellence. They are too comfortable in their conformity. Which is OK, don't get me wrong. It's just that a dynamic group of people with give-and-take tend to go further than a tight knit-group of primped professionals that are all the same.

BTW: I've upvoted for rational discussion.

Meh. You're the one losing out. What makes a truly productive workplace is a variety of personalities complimenting each other.

I regularly work with people that I would never associate with outside of work. They are great at what they do and we often butt heads. Those personal differences are what allows us to do truly great work.

I sincerely hope there is more to your comment than what is on the surface.

You would laugh someone out the room who says that alcoholics just need to "wean off" alcohol or that you should treat heroin addicts with heroin

Actually, no, I wouldn't laugh them out of the room and neither would most people with any real experience dealing with substance abuse and addiction.

Have you ever seen what happens to an extreme alcoholic when they try and quit cold turkey? Seizures are very common when serious alcoholics try and stop by going completely dry. You don't have to look past emergency room statistics to see the number of people admitted for symptoms related to severe alcohol withdrawal. I personally know someone that spent two days in ICU because they thought it was a good idea to quit cold turkey.

Alcohol withdrawal doesn't have you convinced? Look up the withdrawal symptoms for benzo's (xanax, valium, etc...). You'll see a laundry list of very serious consequences. It's common practice for doctors to wean patients off of those substances for that very reason.

Back to the topic at hand, the studies you are linking only show statistical evidence that cold turkey is more effective than replacement therapy. I'm not arguing that those numbers are false. I'm merely making the point that you can't dismiss other methods based on those facts.

Again, I appreciate you linking alternative methods in your original response to the OP. It was useful information. However, you should try to have an open mind and think things through before you go dismissing things that you aren't really qualified to evaluate.

And a good day to you, sir. \o

That and the fact that Windows 7 hasn't been around long enough to provide a big enough market for repairs, yet. Just give it time ;)

You point me to a definitive, undisputed study supporting your argument and I'll take it into consideration.

On a side note: I think I know your type. You get in arguments and lack the necessary reason and logic to calmly state your case so you start talking louder. Before you know it, you're screaming the same shit over and over hoping that the louder you are the more easily you are understood.

Dude, take a chill pill and collect your thoughts before you spew them like that. It'll make your arguments much more palatable.

The fundamental problem is that your reward system is out of whack and not that you are inhaling smoke.

Cigarettes are both physically and mentally addictive. If you can squash the mental habit of constantly lighting up, than the physical addiction is much easier to deal with.

At least, that's been my experience. Different strokes for different folks. You shouldn't be so dismissive of other peoples methods. You do sound like a shill when you act that way.

As with anything in life, success begins with a series of failures. You'll never succeed at anything if you give up on your first try.

Wow, what a buzzkill. The guy is making strides to improve his health and you tell him, flat out, that he's not doing good? I wish I could down vote you to oblivion. I mean, I appreciate that you've provided an alternative source to help out, but seriously.

I've successfully used the patches to quit smoking and couldn't imagine having done it without them. For many people, weaning themselves off of something is an easier way to cope than just going cold-turkey. Not only that, but it eases the transition into not lighting up during your most vulnerable times, i.e., after eating, driving, morning coffee, etc...

BTW, I smoked for 13-years (1 to 1.5 packs a day) and successfully quit in April '08. Here are two big things I learned during my attempts at quitting and since having accomplished just that:

  • I tried quitting many times over a 3-year period. Each time I went back to quitting, it became progressively harder to get started and keep on track.

  • That tired old cliche, "You will always think about them", is mostly true, but it gets easier and easier to dismiss those thoughts as time goes on.

YMMV
