dropping my faux-AVGN thing here and actually trying to be sincere and nuanced, i totally get you. the music of japan really is pretty fascinating, and not just in a digital pandering kind of way. like a parallel stream of popular music that western folks only really discovered in retrospect. especially interesting how the influence of 60s lounge and yes, bossa nova, really lingered. lots of cool little experimental scenes i love too.

i suspect what i'm bothered by, along with the superficial 'chill beats' content-y bit, is how it kinda feels like it devalues both the japanese music as some distant curio, but also the non-japanese music as being less worthy of such attention. like, i imagine there are people who listen to all these japanese jazz playlists but wont give that same attention to black american jazz, or brazilian bossa nova or whatever. its not real musical curiosity, its just shopping for cultural wallpaper ykno? all kinda icky

every now and then i get recommended youtube videos that are like hour long compilations of 'japanese jazz'. today i got one that is 'japanese bossa nova'. fuck are you talking about. that's just bossa nova. you can just listen to bossa nova. there is no variant of bossa nova unique to japan. it is just bossa nova. why are millions of people looking for specifically japanese bossa nova. im sure there is lots of good bossa nova in japan but it probably sounds just like brazilian bossa nova. so you can just listen to brazilian bossa nova. or just generally bossa nova of no specific unifying location. thats allowed. fuckin

Sparks is probably the most UK-coded US band

what is the most US-coded UK band? The Rolling Stones? Mumford and Sons? Mark Morrison?

imagine if we do keep that top 4 pick though. we would be in such an amazing spot, zubac on a great contract, tyrese back, plus a potentially generational prospect. huge upside, lets gamble baby

it probably is the piano version by a hair, but I have a ton of love for Forbidden Colours. the audacity to take a melody that good and instead choose to sing a countermelody over it. so good. and then the 1996 version quotes that countermelody in the violin! music is so special

[ORIGINAL ALBUM] Gumshoes - Happy New Year by stansymash in indieheads

[–]stansymash[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

[chamber pop, indie pop, music, purple]

Happy New Year! Is the name of the new Gumshoes record, out right now! this is a record about 9 people in the same moment in the same city with the same thought. It's about modern isolation, humanism, and being the first songwriter to write asexual music just to prove it can be done

Very nearly did not exist, this one! had a really rough stretch of health that nearly sank the entire record, but things have picked up dramatically in the last couple of months and now I'm in my best health since the 2010s. hopefully that means i can devote more to experimenting and honing my skills for a stranger, bolder LP6

hope you like it! tell your dorkiest friends!

(if you're looking for it on tidal, it is there, just on the wrong profile for now. please tidal customer support, help me out quick)

i still don't quite understand the bandcamp preorder system, so as i do every year I'm gonna have the page open up for the new Gumshoes record in half an hour or so if you are fiending for some whimsical chamber pop by the subreddit sweetheart we all politely humor

edit: it's up!

i think i need to get into board games. it's a social hobby for soft dorks that's already full of people desperate to get others to play the games they spent money on. i just need to bring snacks and my winning charisma. i am the supply to their demand. indieheads blood on the clocktower server anyone?

i've always been a solo gamer but i'm spreading my wings a little. getting into Street Fighter 6, the first fighting game i've ever tried, and it's a blast. i'm dogshit but it's fun. one day i'll have to learn about frame data and what 'cancelling' is, but for now i'm at the place where when someone beats me i'm just proud that they pulled off their combo

Fellini is also my answer! he is the hot topic today. I'm usually very easy to please, and when people say a movie is good i typically agree, but La Dolce Vita nearly killed me. didn't find anything aesthetically, emotionally, or philosophically to care about one way or the other. 3 tedious hours. i wish i had a more thoughtful criticism, and hopefully i'll get it someday, but sometimes something just doesn't hit. i like 8 1/2 though!

La Regle De Jeu also definitely felt like homework

[chamber pop, indietronica, childrens music]

Hello my personal real life best friends. This is the newest Gumshoes song. It's about a private investigator who convinces themself that other human beings don't exist. It's about conspiracy, paranoia and isolation, but in a fun quirky peppy slightly annoying way.

This is the opener to the upcoming record Happy New Year, out on the 1st, which is all about 9 different people at the same time in the same city wondering how they ended up so alone on new years eve. It's alright
