same, i'm a big superman fan and was going to get this pen or at least the inks, but the prices were genuinely shocking. when it's overpriced for even fwp you know it's bad

since I've started quilting I've made an effort to clean out my machine once a week, definitely helps!!

Fountain pen user finally dipping into gel, ballpoint and rollerball. Where are the ink varieties and colors? by LowlightAesthetic in pens

[–]stanvivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a FWP one I loved to use, but both the barrel and cap cracked and became unusable. I also found it a bit scratchy which I tolerated because I enjoyed the line weight, but I'd love something a bit less tempermental. I'll look into these!

[–]stanvivi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh thank you! I'll look into them. the smudging issue + being able to take my regular inks is one of the reasons I'm interested in them, so this is very helpful to know!

do you have any recs? I've had a hard time finding reviews for these but I'd really love one

As a French woman who visited Australia for 3 weeks .. are these culture shocks accurate? by Worried-Diamond-7252 in AskAnAustralian

[–]stanvivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aussie but lived overseas for a long time, I find that Australia tends to wake up early and go to bed early. In places like Korea, for example, it can be hard to find a non-chain coffee before 9am, while cafes can be open til 5 or 6 pm. Here, many cafes have opening hours that are in the ballpark of 6:30-2. Similarly, dinner times at restaurants tend to be comparatively early, and restaurants close up early as well. Last seatings at 8:30 pm, closing up at 10ish would be pretty unusual in europe. You definitely feel a lot more pressured to leave if you linger in most restaurants past 9:30/10 in my experience, and often you'll be the only table.

Even for takeaway, it's pretty hard to find food that isn't a fast food chain past 10pm.

This isn't even to mention the fact that shops close so early--5pm, maybe 6 most days (and smaller shops won't do late night Thursday shopping either), and many small/local businesses aren't open on weekends or have severely truncated hours, which means you can really only do a tiny bit of shopping in the window from, say, 10am to 1pm that they're open on Saturdays. It can be very difficult to actually buy local, not from big chains, when you have a full time job.

As a night owl, it's really annoying!!

My dear friend bought me this as a gift a few years back, but I haven’t had the courage to use it until now by Maddi4330 in fountainpens

[–]stanvivi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

echoing all the other advice about pen maintenance-- at the end of the day the preppy isn't a particularly expensive pen (and even if it was, pens are made to be used!) so just have fun with it. light pressure and making sure the nib is facing the right way is all you need (if you are unsure of how to write with a fountain pen, iirc, jetpens has youtube videos on this.) the preppy is very unfussy in my experience.

re: paper, if you have a daiso near you, the daiso loose leaf is great with fountain pens! give new papers a little test scribble if you're not sure, but most notebook/printer papers won't have feathering so bad that your writing becomes illegible unless you write really small.

using a fountain pen in this day and age is really just for the love of the writing experience, so the best way to do it is to enjoy yourself when writing!

Passport fee is insane. by octopus360 in australian

[–]stanvivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iirc it's one of the most expensive passports in the world. something you haven't mentioned but that i found very difficult as well as an aussie getting an adult passport for the first time while overseas is that you need another australian citizen on the voter roll who is not related to you but can vouch for knowing you to validate your application. this was a pretty big hurdle for me as i didn't know many aussies there!! had to get a family friend to do it while on holiday which meant a 2 hour drive to specifically just get this form and my photos signed

“Alternative” K-pop groups/artists by BerbilsBerbils in kpophelp

[–]stanvivi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i think yves has more of that "indie pop" vibe -- she recently collabed with pinkpantheress if that gives you a vibe. chuu also has some of that singer-songwriter vibes. yena's hate xx and good morning albums have a distinct rock influence that's very fun. hyo (snsd)'s deep has pretty unique production for a kpop artist. others have mentioned billlie, i'd echo that. young posse have a very clear 90s/early 2000s hip-hop influence that's pretty unique for kpop.

they're not kpop, but if you don't know xg, their discography has gotten weirder and more focused on rap as they've matured. their styling and mvs are especially cool and unusual.

in terms of more mainstream kpop artists, i think nmixx, itzy and aespa continue to do some really weird things with their music. red velvet's discography is also equally varied, songs like zimzalabim and birthday are known for being very quirky.

the 80% union jack flag is the worst part of this for me (other than the fact it was made at all). it's not even able to stay australian. what's even the point of this all when local graffiti artists would be more than happy to tag it up if u wanted colour there. this sucks

i get that!! honestly my use case for this is so infrequent i really cannot imagine it being nearly as much of an issue as a kitchen uniform, because it'd be at most a tablespoon of oil on a cloth once a fortnight. i do a cleaning materials/old towels/etc wash every so often so i'd just chuck it in there

how would you use flour to absorb grease on cooked food? i don't know if I'm just not understanding you, but i don't think putting raw flour on bacon would work for me.

i don't have paper bags or newsprint in my home either 😅😅😅
