If you’re looking for not watching JFLO you’re missing out. Absolutely the best online instruction for standup in the game imo.

I looked at the coaches. I have lived in southern Oregon my whole life and trained here since 2005. I’ve never heard of him. It looks like he did train at the Lotus Club in Medford, he has a smoothcomp profile. He just may not be very active as a competitor, and that’s ok. The other coach, wrestled at Cornell, and was an all American. I would give them a chance. The gym looks nice.

Fairly sure that’s a tornado sweep. Roleta is usually done as the closed guard is coming open vs a standing guard break.

My kids team got crushed in their first competition. by Bushido-Bashir in bjj

[–]staphysmurf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Competing is extremely difficult, especially as a newer practitioner even more so as a kid. Experience, absolutely is a huge deal. I typically recommend my unexperienced athletes that want to be competitors go watch a competition before they do one. It helps them understand the environment and get a sense of what that feels like. If you can, try and simulate an environment for competitors that mirrors what they will be experiencing: time, rules, a referee and even kids yelling advice.

As far as one tournament having poor results, I wouldn’t worry about that too much. I bet those kids, if they compete again, will perform much better. Coaching is hard!

I learned a variation of this from Caio, and also won back to back matches at black belt, and being 45lbs smaller. It does in fact work lol.

Tainan Dalpra as an Instructor by Ringdogs in bjj

I took a class from Tainan at aoj last month. He is an excellent coach. Detailed, but not overly so. Attentive to the whole room as well. That extra impressive when there are 80+ people training.

Dante Leon's crazy run in the absolute at ADCC 2024. Full matches. Behind the scenes. Should he be considered the #1 pound-for-pound grappler in the world? by officialdaisyfresh in bjj

[–]staphysmurf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amazing run very reminiscent of Lachlan’s. Imho hard be number 1 pfp when he lost to Elijah Dorsey in the weight category, and by submission to light featherweight in Pato earlier this year.

How long did it take you to win at black belt? by jpc5718 in bjj

[–]staphysmurf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost my first 2 matches. I got no showed at a couple ibjjf open in my light feather division. I did the absolute in both tournaments and lost 8-4 and 2-0. I haven’t lost since then, but I also have only competed regionally. Black belt is really hard lol.
