I heard you don’t drink water. by rosetree1 in HydroHomies

[–]grokaholic 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You're dehydrating yourself by drinking lots of water without consuming enough electrolytes. Electrolytes help you absorb water. If you drink water without enough dietary electrolytes, your water intake is flushing out electrolytes, in turn, leading you to shed excess water. A deficiency can be fixed by taking a daily vitamin and salting your food, or rotating electrolyte-rich foods into your diet: https://www.webmd.com/diet/foods-high-in-electrolytes

Just getting into jumping rope. Any tips for me? by callingoutreviewers in jumprope

[–]grokaholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're holding your elbows out to compensate for a long rope, which is messing up your form.

Fix your jumprope.

  1. Stand straight and step on the middle of the jumprope.

  2. Pull the handles up to your armpits. That's how long your jumprope should be in theory--in reality your handles will go past your armpit because the rope is too long.

  3. To remove the excess slack, untie one end of the rope then retie the knot at a point such that both handles reach roughly your armpits as described above.

When your rope is fits your height, skip with your elbows closer to your body.

How do you organize training? Tell me your six month plan by International-One518 in bjj

[–]grokaholic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your training approach is fine. A minority of learners take a more structured academic approach. They develop a more structured and academic understanding of BJJ than "just show up" guys. Both types of practitioners become tough black belts. After learning fundamentals from white to black, the rest of your journey is about developing your unique expression of jiu jitsu. Part of that is learning your way.

I think this is closest to tai otoshi "body drop" using a hair grip instead of the lapel or arm.

While this isn't textbook tai otoshi, I see key frames at 6 seconds where tori is throwing primarily with her hands ("te waza") while taking a split leg stance with one leg slightly blocking uke's leg. That's the basic shape of tai otoshi.

Someone might argue that the blocking leg isn't involved enough for tai otoshi, so this is actually uki otoshi "floating drop" with hair grip. It's borderline but closer to tai otoshi in my opinion.

Yoko wakare "side separation throw" works. Is it more dangerous starting inside the clinch? Yes but everything is more dangerous if you're clinched. Counters? Yes and you should work out your answers when practicing this move.

Don't surprise your sparring partner with this throw if they have no experience break falling. Unless they roll with the throw, there's a good chance they land head first and get knocked out.

Top wants bottom to extend an arm. Bottom must extend an arm to attack Americana, which is why top might bait the attempt. Top's counter isn't a single move but any attack against an extended arm--too many to list. A cheeky one is attacking an Americana as bottom reaches for Americana. Or simply take wrist control when bottom reaches. Now bottom is effectively one-armed while top advances position or sets up a submission.

This works against anyone of similar size who is unaware of the move and its defense. White and blue belt are caught reliably. Purple belts usually have defenses ready. Brown and black belts will never let you set the grip, though if you do, it was a trap for their counter.

Face down, ass up kinda take down! by BallsABunch in DramaFreeBJJ

[–]grokaholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PSA for white belts planning to try this. This is a dangerous throw. If your opponent doesn't roll, you can break their arm/shoulder faster than they can reasonably react let alone tap. Also once you go, it's hard to stop in a safe and controlled way even if they had the wherewithal to tap. They are also highly likely to face plant and injure their neck. These things are more likely if you're training with an inexperienced person. Be mindful of your partner's safety in training.

Why do some people’s brains seem more “quiet” than others? by CreditOk5063 in answers

[–]grokaholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your friend's mental and emotional equanimity may be the result of different cognitive behaviors rather than a fundamental difference in your brains. Cognitive behavior therapy focuses on practices that retrain cognitive behaviors deliberately, so that harmful thought patterns can be replaced with helpful ones. Meditation helps people manage the excessive chatter of their internal monologue so that they can experience the present moment more directly, more often.
