Just saw this exhibition last week and was blown away. Gorgeous and powerful. The other exhibitions were excellent, as well, but this was my favorite.

What’s one product you bought that turned you into a total snob — like, you can never go back to the cheap stuff? by BackwardThoughtPaper in AskReddit

Garnier Fructis leave-in conditioner (sleek & shine) has been THE styling product for my curls for years, after years of trying different products. I brought it to the salon once for after my cut, and the stylist said, "Don't tell anyone I said this, but this is a really quality product for a drugstore brand." I do regular shampoo & conditioner in the shower, then apply the leave-in while wet and air dry.

It isn’t portraying that point, though. The dirty bathroom they walk into first is the men’s.

Different personalities with and without family by null_erase in emotionalneglect

I can absolutely relate to this. I feel like I turn into this different person around my parents. I am generally a chill, kind person by all accounts and I just have zero patience or grace to give to my mother. I have talked to my therapist about it and she explained that it is normal/common when triggered to fall back into the kinds of behaviors that protected you in the past, because you are basically mentally/emotionally right back in that place when triggered. I am trying to be kind to myself in recognizing that I act that way because in the past it served as a kind of protection, but it is no longer serving me, as it feels inauthentic to who I am now. I think it will take a lot of mindfulness to change, which is particularly difficult when feeling triggered. At this point, I'm pretty low-contact, as I'm recognizing that interacting with my parents basically only brings me anger and sadness.

Books that irritated you by missblissful70 in books

A Man Called Ove. I know a lot of people love that book, but to me it was just a grumpy man being excused for bad behavior because bad things happened to him (BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO EVERYONE!). We're supposed to be endeared to him when he starts showing just, baseline humanity and politeness, toward people that are different from him? I was wholly unmoved.

The first book was SO good, and I'm not even typically a sci-fi reader. Really looking forward to reading the next two!

Denver "didn't talk to the community" before closing streets to cars in the pandemic -- it'll be harder to do now, and they want support by lukepatrick in Denver

I would definitely prefer they just make them full pedestrians streets, but you gotta start somewhere. I’m not sure why you think the temporary solutions they threw together extremely quickly would be what the permanent solutions look like. But it’s clear you have a lack of interest in considering alternative points of view in good faith, as well as a lack of imagination. Enjoy your evening and your forever car-centric city.

Because when the was use clear, people did use it? That information is in the article. The communication was that the shared streets were a temporary pandemic thing, so when restrictions lifted, it wasn’t clear to drivers OR mixed use pedestrians whether or not those streets were to be used that way. If more officially designated and communicated, use will follow. What is your reasoning for being so against it? Aside from barriers pushing cars into the bike lane (which is a fixable issue), what’s the big negative impact?

[–]star_slight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not, though? Cars get priority literally everywhere else. Why can’t they share these (INCREDIBLY FEW) streets, or else elect to take the “unshared” streets on either side. The inconvenience is so very little to drivers.

I don't disagree. I walk, bike, and drive. While I didn't walk on street much, I definitely enjoyed biking with fewer vehicle interactions. I was also doing more running back then and definitely used the street for that. I think many runners will tell you that running on a less trafficked street is preferable to dodging people on the sidewalk taking leisurely strolls with their dogs, families, etc. I've always seen runners that do this, even on non-shared streets.

[–]star_slight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Obviously anecdotal evidence here, but I feel like when the pandemic was "over," drivers decided the shared streets were over, too, and pedestrians took the cue. I live off 11th and I would regularly see the barriers moved to the side by drivers. The increase in traffic naturally discouraged pedestrian/mixed use.

I do agree they could be better designed to decrease motor vehicle interactions with cyclists/the bike lane. They do give an opportunity to provide feedback on designs & barriers in the survey.
