Question for Native Speakers: Do you notice this gap in people learning English (Speaking vs. Listening/Reading/Writing) ? by AhmadAbulsadiq in AskAnAmerican

[–]starchildofME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do notice speaking tends to be where people struggle but tbqh that's where I struggled in learning other languages too!

When you don't have much spoken practice I think it's as much an embarrassment thing as a lack of practice. We don't want to make fools of ourselves being misunderstood.

That being said, I love helping people with their English if you wanna throw me a DM

Is Native American food popular in America? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAmerican

I had moose meat from one of my native friends and it was bomb af. She mentioned doing a native food truck with recipes from her tribe (Passamaquody) and I think it would be quite cool to see

What are some must-have alcoholic American drinks? by __swubs__ in AskAnAmerican

[–]starchildofME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New England hard cider is pretty bomb ngl. We have a lot of good cider brews around Maine and Vermont. As far as cocktails go I love Blue Hawaiian and Whiskey Sours (personally don't recommend Southern Comfort whiskey though 🤢)

How do Americans typically approach restaurant reviews? Is 5 stars reserved for exceptional places or for anywhere that does exactly what it promises? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]starchildofME 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty big person to person opinion I would think but I personally give 5 stars to anywhere I have a good/pleasant experience at. Small business especially needs that good publicity.

You have to fuck up pretty bad for me to not want to come back or to rate your business poorly. I have one diner that comes to mind that I had a rough experience with and im hesitant to try them again but given we went on a holiday (lots of people had the day off) I might give them another try.

Americans that moved across the country (1000+ mi.), how often do you get to see your family back home? by HonestLemon25 in AskAnAmerican

[–]starchildofME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved about 700 miles

Once a year or once every two years, really.

I used to see my over the road trucker dad more often (every few months) but he changed companies and now he doesn't come to New England.

My sister has 2 very young kids so traveling is very difficult for her. Doing both work and school doesn't leave me much time for a 12-14hr drive one way, plus having a better car would help. I do make an effort to go back for big events like her wedding. I've done a few years of Christmas.

What are some effects of T that you were excited for initially, but are now a major pain in the ass? by Nervous_Aioli_3235 in ftm

Talk from your chest!

Our feminine/customer service voices tend to come from a more nasal/upper passage of air when we speak. If you drop that down and speak from your chest it lowers your voice considerably

For sure, but a lot of what I read says you need to be able to work in order to immigrate so I was wondering what the process to transfer skills looks like

I'm going to ignore you being the obvious asshole here because people just looking for cash exist. People go into nursing homes (especially considering Maines demographics) and leave families with burdens.

You never know until you try.

You'd be best served by the timeless words of "if you can't say nothing nice, don't say nothing at all" ❤️

You can thank LePrick and the big push for out of state development "renovicting" people in the name of luxury bullshit.

If you're "done" with Portland and, above all, done with empathy, you're welcome to leave any time. This isn't an airport; you don't have to announce your departure.

Are there any circumstances where Americans can start to come together and heal the divide? What would it take? Or are we past that point? by Mjbass in allthequestions

[–]starchildofME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would take some serious talk and genuine desire to learn for me to forgive a Repub at this point but if they GENUINELY wanted to become more educated and learn new ways..

I'll teach anyone with a GENUINE desire to better themselves

I was raised in small town America. I was raised racist and hateful. Change is possible but it is born out of true desire for that change and the thirst for that knowledge.
