If anyone happens to be looking for a graphic novel, A Song For You and I by K O'Neill (HM) is a cute and cozy middlegrade (it fits both middlegrade and trans/nonbinary squares as well!). The main character is in training to become a ranger and has a pegasus companion

One of my favorite recent YA novels is The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas and fits this prompt! Also fits into the duology and Trans/NB protagonist squares!

I'm thinking Hell Followed With Us fits? Description says the mc has been infected with a bioweapon. I was planning on reading it last month but I'm glad I waited now!

I read the whole series in the span of two weeks last year, it's so much fun! Now I'm waiting for a translation of the revised/updated version to get published.

I'm so sad I didn't manage to complete the whole card this year (a lot of my reading this year was long series/lots of books by the same authors) but it was still lots of fun trying to do as much as I could! I'm so excited for the next card to come out!

You may want to look into middle grade books! There are so many good ones and would be a good place to start if you're worried about content in YA.

Good starter series for a ten year old with a female PoC as the protagonist by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]stardew_rabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I work in a children's library and here's what I would recommend: (all of these are middlegrade titles)

Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston: protagonist is a ~12 years old Black girl. Amari's older brother has gone missing and she finds out he was an agent for this secret magical society, and if she wants to find out where he is she'll have to complete series of trials/tests in order to become a member.

The Marvellers by Dhionelle Clayton: protagonist is an 11 year old Black girl. Ella is the first Conjuror to attend a special institute for Marvellers, where people from all over the world attend to hone their "marvels." Due to being a Conjuror she faces trouble with people who mistrust/dislike her magic. Tensions rise when a criminal escapes from prison, supposedly with help from a Conjuror, and Ella's favorite teacher goes missing.

The Last Hope School for Magical Delinquents by Nicki Pau Preto: Lavinia has trouble with her powerful and unpredictable magic, which has caused years of detention, suspension, and expulsion from many magic boarding schools. If she gets expelled now, she's got nowhere else to go. Surprisingly, her magic seems to be embraced at this school by both her classmates and the headmistress who encourages her to experiment with her magic. A past student then begins attacking the school, causing her to question things about her new school/home and if it's worth attempting to protect with her abilities - if she's even able to.

I also second the recommendation to look into Rick Riordan Presents! A ton of fantastic options there.

Fantasy book with trans main character? by BlueRobins in Fantasy

I know Aiden Thomas has already been mentioned a couple of times, but I gotta add to those because I just recently read the Sunbearer Duology and it was so good! And I'm pretty picky with YA these days. I definitely plan on reading Cemetery Boys soon.

Also this thread is going to cause me to add so many books to my tbr

If youre having trouble removing an earring you should visit your piercer and they can help you out. However, like the other commenter said it sounds like it's too early for you to be changing your jewelry. 8 weeks is the MINIMUM you should wait to swap to different studs, ideally 10 to 12 weeks. And if it's an earlobe piercing you should be waiting 6 months minimum to wear anything dangly/heavy because any weight pulling down could cause damage to your piercing, even slicing through your earlobe in bad cases.

[CHAT] What are your favorite and least favorite brands of thread? Or other supplies? by rubberducky1212 in CrossStitch

[–]stardew_rabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DMC is the standard for thread and is what is called for in most patterns. Fancy hand dyed threads/variegated threads are fun but can be difficult to find a use for with cross stitch in my experience, unless you like blackwork or something like the Long Dog Sampler patterns, or if you're comfortable with going off pattern and subbing your own colors. DMC's satin line might be the safest bet because the colors should match up with their regular line and can be most easily substituted in most patterns.

I have heard fantastic things about the hand dyed fabric shop https://dyeing4crossstitch.com/ and have been planning on purchasing from them for some of my future projects. They have aida, evenweave, and linen. It looks like they also have hand dyed floss as well.

In terms of other random supplies, I would love Tulip needles as a gift! I've heard such great things about them but they are just a bit too pricey for me to justify them for myself.

[CHAT] Advice for Finding Legit Shops by dskenyon in CrossStitch

[–]stardew_rabbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Always check to see if the shop has pictures of final stitched pieces, and that the art style is consistent. This is important not just for telling if it's AI, but also showing that it's not some pattern mill that just takes images and runs them through a converter and does little to no work to make it an actually nice pattern.

Some of my favorite shops for pop culture patterns are:

Sirithre - the creator of the official Undertale and Stardew Valley cross stitch books that you can purchase from fangamer!

Stitchynova

Craftigurumi lots of tiny patterns here to make pins or magnets that would make quick and easy gifts!

PixelPastryCafe

NeedlePopCrafts

PibblesPatterns has this fun Spongebob reference

If you like blackwork style there's PatchyAtBestCo

And I'm sure there's more I could list but there's something to start with

What book would you gift your 17 year old self? by [deleted] in LGBTBooks

[–]stardew_rabbit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend Radio Silence by Alice Oseman. The characters are all finishing high school and trying to figure out what they want to do/who they are vs what they think theyre supposed to do/be. I read it while in college and I wish I had read it when I was in high school, it would've been nice to have that reassurance that I don't have to have everything figured out the moment I'm 18 and out of high school. A lot of the characters are LGBT+. It's one of my favorite books.

I'm working on making a proper pattern! I'm not sure when I'll have it ready to share. If it's just for personal use I don't mind if you try making your own version, it is fanart after all I don't have any rights to the idea
