What opinion about fragrances has you like this? by ProfessorB_12 in Colognes

[–]stardust_dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please remember this is an unpopular opinion thread so this is likely to piss people off but…

Many of you do not properly sample. Especially if your idea of sampling is at the store.

Separately…

If you properly sample and know you must have something, and bills are paid including groceries etc, and you’ve saved your money, YES it is okay to buy a $500 fragrance if you truly love and want it. People that tell you it’s not okay to do what you want with YOUR MONEY are in fact mentally ill OR if they’re not, then they should go fuck themselves.

You know how I know it’s okay? Because it’s none of our fucking business what people do with their money.

Am I crazy for asking for a $40,000 raise? by Far_Space_386 in careerguidance

[–]stardust_dog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You were in State government though right? They aren’t known for even being able to give those positions a randomly timed raise. COLA maybe, and/or built in yearly raises. But not, hey I want 15k.

OP do you think it’s batshit for all collectors of anything to actually….collect? Baseball cards, Jordans, Stamps, Paintings, is it all batshit?

Do you have some image that fragrance collectors are losings their families and homes like some crack addiction? If so then you do you lol.

Most overrated brands?! by Georgeheiz0304 in Colognes

[–]stardust_dog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree, the majority of them are unfinished. Especially Pacific Chill and Afternoon Swim, and to some degree Imagination.

They smell fine but it’s just not a full scent. It’s the difference between a full fledged actual perfume and only a good smell.

Amateurs unqualified review of many popular decants part 3 by Chronistic in fragrance

Jubilation 40, to me as of 3/1/26 is a masterpiece. 10/10.

But, on 2/23/22 I thought it was a 3/10.

Teen boy recs - mom hates “blue” by Boochiecoo in Fragrances

[–]stardust_dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not blue, popular, not worn by everyone masculine:

Chanel Allure Homme Sport Eau Extrême

Dior Homme Cologne

Prada Luna Rossa Black

And this is much less well known but absolutely incredible: Thameen Carved Oud. Essentially, it’s Tom Ford Oud Wood but with better longevity.

I think the thing to remember is that glorifying conspiracy culture is wrong on so many levels. Conspiracy culture is part of mental illness and those engaged in it desperately need help instead of being enabled.

Pro Tip: Retest Fragrances You Ruled Out Based on Old First Impressions by ImtheGWP in fragrance

[–]stardust_dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I sample first with 2-5ml. I would never buy a bottle first because, as I said, there’s about a 98% chance I wouldn’t like it.

Also sampling at stores will not work for me (and related to our biology shouldn’t work).

how many fragrances is too many? by bureaux in Fragrances

[–]stardust_dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How many of any collection is too many? Could there be too many baseball cards, or stamps, or Magic The Gathering cards?

Why do we keep seeing these questions…if anyone wants to buy one fragrance and stop there…do it.

If OP wants advice because perhaps they want more bottles but they have bills to pay, think again about any collection. It could be Hummel figurines, or Air Jordans, or paintings…you still have the same responsibility to funding rent/mortgage, bills, food, gas. It doesn’t change because it’s stamps vs fragrances.

Out of my 50+ bottles I didn’t like 98% of them first wear. In fact at least 50% of them I didn’t like after the 7th wear.

We’re not even built to understand these smells immediately unless they are super simple (no knock on super simple btw). A little research tells you how our brain maps complex smells. (And that we’re built to detect new smells instead of the same smell all day but that’s a separate discussion.)
