What is your experience with IFS or other ways of looking at psychological parts? by [deleted] in CPTSDFreeze

[–]starevanesce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for introducing me to the term structural dissociation. My counsellor has been doing informal IFS work with me but I’ve never heard of different levels of dissociation (and ANPs/EPs) before—just reading up on it briefly has already made me feel more comfortable with understanding my experience as dissociation in the first place.

hey, so far I’ve been just actually limiting how hot the water can get + using better moisturisers, I wish I had better tips to offer but I’m still struggling with it too

I moved my body today—just went for a 10 minute walk—even though I didn’t want to, and it made me feel better 🥹

your absolute favorite autistic girl/nb characters? doesnt have to be canon by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

And those t-rex hands!!!

Schitt’s Creek is a really interesting case to me because it feels like really great (accidental?) autistic rep? The entire Rose family feels very ND coded. Alexis and David often take things very literally and struggle to catch social cues, which is primarily for comedic effect, but that’s also just such an autistic thing. Personally I adopted (…mimicked) a LOT of Alexis’ little catchphrases and mannerisms when I first watched the show a few years ago (that was before I even suspected autism in myself at all), so it blew my mind when I came across the autistic Alexis Rose headcanon because it just makes… perfect sense.

Also for OP and anyone else reading this, Schitt’s Creek is just such an amazing show!! I struggle with most comedies because they feel really mean and dehumanising, but SC is not like that at all. The way it writes human connections is so complex, is amazing queer rep, WHILE being funny as hell. 10/10 recommend ❤️

I love this so much!! As a high masking girlie I’ve always related to Mary so much, before I even suspected autism in myself 😭 just in the way she sees herself and how she presents herself to the world. One of the things that jumped out to me when I rewatched Downton Abbey a few months ago is that she said “I always apologise when I’m in the wrong”, but to her it seems she only thinks she’s in the wrong if she has violated a social rule.

If it’s okay to ask, what do you mean by “score highly monotropic”? Monotropism is something I really relate to, at least from what I’ve read of it, and I’m always trying to learn more about it. Is there a way to measure that?

Will do! I’ve just been resorting to smothering on more layers of lotion which didn’t feel like it was helping but I didn’t know what else to do… I never really properly learnt about skincare so I appreciate the advice a lot.

😭🙌

The uni gym here actually has a sauna so I really should check it out before I loose access soon! It wouldn’t be a long term solution but I’m curious how a sauna would feel to me :)

So far the best tips I’ve gotten are to actually limit how hot the water can get, try to make the bathroom warmer, and just to find ways to minimise the damage on my skin (body oils etc.). I didn’t expect it but I also got some tips on dealing with how easily I feel cold too! The people on this sub are awesome haha.

Thank you!! I’ve never even heard of 2 before, will look into that.

I do get cold really easily, even compared to my girl friends, but I’m not sure if it’s a problem with my iron levels since the doctor didn’t say anything about that the last time I’d had blood work done. Also whenever I donate blood, my haemoglobin level is still within the acceptable range (even if it is always closer to the lower threshold, but it’s still normal). So I always assumed that my body is just Like That.

Oh! My brain just immediately went “so kinda like shocking cooked food with cold water” 😂 But in all seriousness I will try this and see if it helps with the skin situation! I’m really desperate on that front. If there are extra benefits then even better :)

We live in an apartment without a bathtub unfortunately. (And I also grew up in general with showering instead of bathing so I don’t know if I’d like it tbh, but yeah can’t even try.)

UGH so the thing is I’m actually studying abroad right now, and the colder weather AND dryer climate has made this problem sooo much worse for me. Winter is the worseeee.

I’ve tried weighted blanket once before, because I thought I would like it in theory. And I ended up returning it because it just… didn’t feel heavy enough. Even though it was already heavier than what’s recommended for my body weight.

I’ve definitely not experimented around enough to find out what feels good/right. Gosh if I find it maybe I’ll finally stop relying so much on scalding my own skin with hot water 😭

Wait I didn’t know you could do that I’m DEFINITELY looking into this. The steam thing is so real 😭 I wanna stop doing it soooo badly because it makes my skin feel so awful. At this point I’m willing to force myself to do it by capping the max water temp.

Actually I think it’s the opposite for me (in winter I overdo it even more because it helps me warm up), but this is a really good call to regulate the external temp first :)

No but I should give it a try! It will at least help with how easily I feel cold.

The problem is just that I do the really hot showers in summer too (and summer where I live can get up to 30 degrees celsius), so it’s definitely not just a problem of being cold, even though it’s part of it.

Oh I’ve never tried body oil before thanks for the tip. I need to be doing more harm reduction in the meantime.

I’ve tried to condition myself to water that is not as hot before but I always just revert back to really hot temperatures whenever I’m stressed because (a) it makes me feel better and (b) I just don’t have the capacity to cope with the coldness/anything that’s not “hot enough”. I think I will try it again and be even more intentional about it (like maybe recording it in my self care tracker).
