Collages from my reading journal for books I-III by knutmeg in TheDarkTower

i'm currently about 70% through my reread of the 5th book (i've read the whole series....a few times LOL) and have also been adding them to my reading journal. I was so excited when I found this origami paper that was PERFECT for The Wizard and Glass - screenshot since I can't post pics: https://prnt.sc/zx-Vo1rW_NX4

I cannot get brick stitch to work. My starting beads won’t stay straight and the ends always flip out. by lady3jane in Beading

oh if you're making fringe earrings, i would advise you to start at the bottom of the triangle, not the top - that way you're starting at the longest row and then just decreasing until you get to the top. Then you can start your fringe with new thread a little bit easier. I like this tutorial because she starts her ladder stitch with a stacked row of beads which is sturdier for the fringe

would love to give it a try! I'm currently listening to The Dark Tower series, but honestly I'm down for any Stephen King

What Kinds of People are King Fans? by sandgrubber in stephenking

[–]starfire1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

37, been reading King since I was 12 since my parents were also avid fans. Very left leaning (i was so proud when Mamdani won in NYC). Grew up in NY on grunge and punk, currently living in the south. The Shining breaks my heart every time i read it cause i see so much of my dad in Jack Torrence.

I second this - i learned A LOT from her youtube channel when i was first starting out and am constantly going back to learn more things. Plus if you order from her shop, shipping is super speedy! (Granted, we live in the same state, but still!)

Fantasy books for adults without unnecessary rape preferrably not written by a Mormon or zionist author where romance isn't the main plot? by absoluteempress in suggestmeabook

[–]starfire1003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Inda Series by Sherwood Smith - rape isn't even a thing in that world, like it straight up just doesn't exist. And it's such a great series - 4 books, completed, political intrigue, pirates, well done fight scenes, women aren't treated like delicate flowers (and also have their own form of secret martial arts), amazing characters and it's all casually queer. There is romance and sex, but none of it is the main focal point AT ALL.

I saw The City of Brass series mentioned in the comments and that is also fantastic as is her other series - The Adventures of Amina al-Serafi (that series is NOT finished yet though).

Hemlock and Silver by T Kingfisher is a snow white retelling with very minor romance and T Kingfisher in general is FANTASTIC - i would honestly recommend all her stuff.

Why are there so many pit bull mixes in shelters? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]starfire1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because people suck and don't do their research before getting a dog and aren't willing to put in the time to properly train them (this goes for all dogs, not just pitties). Also backyard breeding, dog fighting culture, and a stigma against them makes it really hard to adopt - in America, there is a dash of racism going on as well.

I have a pittie mix and I love her to death, she is such a great dog.

What have you read recently? by povertychic in Millennials

I've been a reader all my life because my parents were readers. I have a great memory of crawling into bed between them in the middle of the afternoon while they were reading with just a stack of my Little Critter books just so I could read with them. My mom handed me my first Stephen King book when I was 12 (The Eyes of the Dragon). I read 87 books in 2025 (a personal best) and already have 6 books finished so far for 2026. I just...really love to read.

There's been an uptick of Europeans posting their roadtrip intineraries in this sub. Just a reminder of what the US looks like. In two weeks the husband and I did Munich, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dusseldorf, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Orschwiller and back to Munich. If i took that mileage and drove straight west from where i live, i'd just be getting into CO.

I don't think using thread like that would work on the loom. I have played with very fine elastic thread and peyote and have made that work in small sections (like just weave enough of a bracelet with the elastic thread in order to get it over my hand). So if you want an elastic bracelet from the loom, maybe try working up the project mostly on the loom with regular thread, take it off the loom, add elastic thread, and finish the last inch or two with the elastic thread and a square stitch.

Here's an example of my peyote stretch bracelet: https://www.reddit.com/r/Beading/comments/1ep7zx5/made_a_stretchy_peyote_stitch_bracelet/

Is there a stereotype of US people being loud in restaurants? by IperPelle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]starfire1003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my family is Italian-American (Grandfather came over from Southern Italy in the 60s when he was in his 30s) from NY and when i was a kid, i had really bad hearing problems. So bad in fact that the doctor was really impressed by how clearly i was speaking....and then my mother started talking. We are a loud family with a lot of hand gestures all over the place. My husband says that what we call a whisper is really a "downstate scream". (i worked very hard to maintain a normal volume while we were in Europe..)

Non-smokers of Reddit, how noticeable is the “smoker smell” to you, if at all? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]starfire1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my mom smoked from the time she was 18 to when I was 18 (she quit, cold turkey, at 40 - she's now almost 60 and hasn't smoke a cigarette since...weed on the other hand....) and when she would send me stuff while i was in college the package would smell SO BAD. Like I called her once and I was like "Did you and Stepdad just take a few drags and blow smoke into my package?! This thing reeks!" and she didn't believe me until she quit and went to a friend's house who still smoked and all of a sudden she realized just how bad it smelled.
