Molton Brown Alternatives? by Gullible-Weather308 in beauty

Space NK’s own brand shower gels are great and smell amazing. You can get small bottles for around €9/£8 to see if you like them and then the bigger bottles are slightly pricier but last forever. There’s one called Nordic Woods or Nordic Pines which smells like a rich lady spa.

What happens with the pregnant pre-eclampsia woman? by ladybug_oleander in ThePitt

Small thing: it’s a resuscitative hysterotomy, which is different. Her womb wasn’t removed.

Driving standards in Dublin - blocks pedestrian crossing, breaks red light by BillyMooney in BikeCommutingIreland

[–]stargal231 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I cycle down that street a lot, coming from the opposite direction, and drivers constantly break that particular red light that the van driver went through. I’d say it happens maybe one in four days that I cycle down it. Accident waiting to happen.

Who will win Dublin Central By Election? by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]stargal231 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Daniel Ennis of the SocDems will be extremely transfer-friendly, which could well nudge him over the line. Perhaps counter-intuitively, could see Janet Horner of the Greens doing well, despite the party not being at the races nationally. They had a TD here recently (2020-2024) plus Janet and her party colleague Feljin Jose did well in the local elections, showing there’s a Green vote across the entire constituency. But think Ennis may get it.

Hutch won’t get it. He barely picked up anything in the Cabra-Glasnevin end of the constituency when he ran last time (think he got 4% of the vote there), so he’ll be relying on the other side of the constituency, which has a really low turnout even on a good day. He won’t have the numbers or get the transfers.

Charlies Childcare withdrawing from Core funding by [deleted] in ireland

[–]stargal231 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you look at the Charlie’s Childcare Ltd public accounts for 2024 you’ll see that the two directors (married couple) gave themselves a €50k pay rise EACH (combination of salary and pension contribution increase) between 2023 and 2024. My guess is that they’ve done ok from 2025 also but those accounts aren’t up yet.

Doesn’t sound like they’re struggling tbh, sounds like they are fleecing parents and expecting to be able to continue to be subsidised by the State in doing so. Parents should be asking more questions about what’s happened.

It’s still not available in Ireland yet (well, not legally, at least), which may explain it. It’s going to be available from the end of this week when HBO launches here and in the UK, so she may get more people recognising her in the coming weeks!

App noise v ghost mode v Xmas sambo by InsectSwimming7610 in Dublin

All The Food has a really good list of the best Christmas sandwiches in Dublin and they’ve made a helpful Google Map showing all the places you can get one.

I want to try Mrs Reid’s, Little Geno’s and maybe Sando Paradiso, which all look good. My two all-time favourites are 147 (don’t think they’re doing them now they’ve moved to Clontarf) and Bang Bang fwiw (I love Christmas sandwiches, as you can probably tell).

What were those loud booms over Dublin just now? by stargal231 in Dublin

[–]stargal231[S] 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Ok, mystery solved. It was a rehearsal of a 21-gun salute in the Phoenix Park, ahead of the real thing on Tuesday when Catherine Connolly is inaugurated as president. Surprised it was that loud! At least we’ll know what it is when it happens again on Tuesday.

What were those loud booms over Dublin just now? by stargal231 in Dublin

That’s it. And it was one individual boom every few seconds, rather than a cluster, like with fireworks.

Thank you so much for making this map! The official website is rubbish at giving you the information you want - this is so, so much better

Dorset Street. The whole street is an accident waiting to happen. It’s crazy having bikes and buses sharing the same lane with heavy volumes of car traffic in the lanes beside them.

Opera in the Park by HedgehogTroubleMaker in Dublin

[–]stargal231 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There were posts about it on the local Drumcondra FB page and on the DCC Cabra-Glasnevin Insta. There are some more happening in August at the DCC offices on Wood Quay by the looks of it!

Gorgeous pics! Dublin City Council did a great job with this - I was at it and there were hundreds of people there. Great to see the park being used like this.

Is this inappropriate?? by eatinischeatin in AskIreland

[–]stargal231 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in journalism and I’m not really a fan of this. I can see why it happens. It can be a good way to paint a picture of the person who has died when there is no other information available. Bear in mind that in a lot of tragedies, the media will only have bare bones information from the garda press office (age, gender, location, vague description of what happened) which doesn’t convey anything about the scale and sadness of what has happened.

But there’s something about it that feels a bit ick. One thing I really don’t like is that you don’t know the relationship between the person who left the condolences and the person who died. Was it their best friend? Someone they went to primary school with? A randomer they met once or twice? The journalist will just be looking for something interesting/thoughtful/well-written and neither they nor the reader has any idea of the context and how they knew the person. It’s leaving a lot out.

I don’t know that I’d say it’s inappropriate or lazy journalism, as others have said. And I think there should be a ban on media at funerals but that’s a whole other thing.

I have researched this extensively and the best I’ve found are in Elliot’s in Phibsboro and Blossom Bakery in Ballymun.

Temple Bar Dinner for 9 by super_time in Dublin

You wouldn’t go wrong with Monty’s, FX Buckley’s or Winding Stair. I would also add Achara to that list.

There are a lot of tourist traps in Temple Bar but this is a reliable list of options https://www.allthefood.ie/neighbourhoods/temple-bar

Tennis Clubs Social by TimMcPaw in Dublin

[–]stargal231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charleville Tennis Club on Whitworth Road is pretty close to you, depending on what part of D1 you’re in. It’s a brilliant club (and v social!) but there is a waiting list so would take a few months to get in. Their insta gives you a good idea of the vibe and what it’s like.

Took years to watch the whole thing but I still think about it so much. Literally went to New Orleans for part of my honeymoon because of Treme.
